Nearly 10 years ago, on January 24th 2005 a lady walked through the doors of The Mission Theatre. She hto see the opening night of our inaugural showComic Potential, by company patron Sir Alan Ayckbourn. I donwho the lady was, but she might read this and remember that she was greeted by someone who kept shakinushering her in and saying over and over again Welcome, welcome to The Mission Theatre. You are our vaudience member! Yes, I was the nervous Artistic Director shaking that hand and pinching myself in disbNext Stage Theatre Company really managed to open an independent theatre in the heart of Bath in just 6

I had received the keys to the building on November 7th2004 and immediately had 13 contractors on site, a cementmixer churning in the auditorium, and drilling, carpentryand painting going on throughout the building. The entirespace had to be re-wired, there was no heating through thebitterly cold weeks before and after Christmas, full stagecurtaining had to be measured and hung in both auditoriaand at every window. The aisle between the raised ooringareas that used to hold the wooden pews had to be lled into create a theatre in the round performance space in ourMain Auditorium and the stage in The Theatre Upstairs hadto be re-boarded and turned through 70 degrees. The smallupstairs kitchen had to be kitted out, toilets, includingone with disabled access, had to be built, a technical roomcreated for sound and light, a heating/cooling systeminstalled in the theatre and an entire lighting rig designedand imported so as not to impact on the fabric of this lovelyGrade 2 listed building. Auditorium chairs had to be chosenand ordered whilst everything necessary to acquire a Public

Entertainment Licence was put in place.Cleaning, painting and decorating were carried outby a team of Next Stage volunteers. Publicity, tickets, programmes and refreshments all had to be procuredand stored, whilst for two weeks over Christmas all workstopped for the festive break.

Then, with just 3 days to go until opening night, our Public Entertainment Licence was awarded and we refollowing from Sir Alan Ayckbourn:How wonderful that Bath has its very own Theatre-in-the-Round! Congratulations Next Stage and welcome to a

distinguished club! Im delighted, too, that your inaugaural production is to be Comic Potential. A play concernmuch with the 3 Ls - Life, Laughter and Love. Every success with the show - and long live The Mission Thearegards as ever, Alan A.

And Life, Laughter and Love are, I hope, what we have brought to many of you who have supported our vbeen to the myriad happy and memorable events held here in the last 10 years.Happy Birthday! Happy decade and, as Alan says, Long live The Mission Theatre.Ann GarnerArtistic Director

For one day only, The Mission Theatre will be transformed into a vintage cinema as we screen theclassic 1929 silent horror lmPhantom of the Opera. Regarded by many as the rst great scarymovie, and certainly the most successful of its kind in the silent era,Phantom of the Opera, directed by Rupert Julian, stars Hollywood greats Lon Chaney and Mary Philbin. What makes this an unmissable event is the fact that the lm will be accompanied by an originalmusical soundtrack, played live by composer Mark Willets and the Black Country Guitar Quartet.

Many of you will have seen and heard Mark here at The Mission Theatre last September when hisvirtuoso playing delighted audiences during The Jane Austen Festival.Phantom of the Opera promises to be a unique experience do not miss it!

When young Annie nds an old scrapbook and secret memoirs belonging to herGrandmother, Marguerite, she can scarcely imagine the colourful story hidden within...

As aged Marguerite (Daisy) writes and reads her memoirs, we learn that she was agentlemans daughter who married the young actor, Dick, against her familys wishes in1906. Following the marriage, Daisy was unprepared for the years of drama that wouldfollow when Dick, after an incident with a gun, ed the country, only to appear later inearly Chaplin lms. Dicks unmasking by his grown-up son in San Francisco during the

Roaring Twenties, adds a colourful and dramatic twist to the story.Extremely well written by someone who has an excellent knowledge of Edwardianmanners. (Artistic Director, Barons Court)

    Next Stage Theatre Company presents

The Weirby Conor McPhersonIn a remote Irish pub, four local men gather for an evening of drinking. But tonight there is anewcomer, a young Dublin woman. The men seek to entertain and impress the young womanwith ghost stories. But she caps all their tales with one of her own, reminding us that truthcan be far more distressing than ction. All ve of McPhersons engaging characters are leading ordinary lives, but each is copingwith a different tragedy which, in the course of an evening of story-telling, comes bubbling tothe surface, turbulently, like water going over a weir.

Combining humour and suspense with masterful craftsmanship,The Weir delights andconfounds audiences. The play was widely praised on its debut in 1997 and won The EveningStandard, Olivier and Critics Circle awards. Since then it has gone on to achieve success allover the world and was voted one of the 100 most signicant plays of the 20th Century in apoll conducted by the Royal National Theatre.

The Weir features an experienced Next Stage cast and the intimate staging lends itselfperfectly to the claustrophobic interior of Brendans bar. This promises to be a night in thepub unlike any other!
