Having seen more than 27,000 patients and deliv-ered nearly 700 babies last year, East Lakeland may ap-pear to focus only on the “basics” of obstetrics and gy-necology; however, it has a range of specialty in-office services to offer. Among these services are infertility evaluation, 4-D ultrasound, fetal monitoring, colpos-copy, diagnostic hysteroscopy, incontinence testing, bone density screening, menopausal management, and more. In 2015, Dr. Lester began a non-profit dental organization, Smiles for Mississippi, whose purpose is to bring every-one in the dental community together for a fun event and to raise money for the dental community.

In his spare time, Dr. Lester enjoys hunting at his fam-ily farm in Canton and fishing in the Louisiana marsh. He and his wife, Lauren, have four children.

Dr. Jason Murphy is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons who has been performing life-changing procedures in the Jackson area for eight years. Dr. Stephen Keith, a gastroenterologist at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, is the only physician in southwest Mississippi performing the ORBERA procedure, a new nonsurgical method of weight loss for people who have been unable to keep weight off through diet and exercise alone.

ORBERA is a soft silicone balloon placed in the stomach and filled with liquid, creating a feeling of fullness. The entire procedure is performed under mild sedation, taking only 30 minutes or less. The patient usually can go home the same day. Maximum placement lasts six months, after which it is deflated and removed. Because ORBERA is reversible, diet and exercise play a vital role in the ultimate success of the program.

As Dr. Keith described, follow-up is the key to success, and in the case of ORBERA that success requires a team effort. The team, which includes a dietician and exercise therapist with the active participation of the patient, is prepared to bring its wide range of talents to bear in helping patients keep the weight off once and for all.

The Headache Center, located in Renaissance Shop-ping Center in Ridgeland, just north of the state’s capital city, is a beacon of light for patients all over Mississippi and the Southeast suffering with chronic headache disor-ders. Established in 2013, The Headache Center has treat-ed over 2,000 patients with migraine and other headache conditions. The staff at The Headache Center has a pas-sion for educating patients and families with headache disorders so that better outcomes are achieved.

Migraine is one of the most disabling conditions on the planet, according to the World Health Organiza-tion. It is also more prevalent than diabetes and asthma combined, affecting over 36 million patients in the U.S. each year. Based on the annual prevalence rate of 12 percent and the population of Mississippi, there are ap-proximately 360,000 people in Mississippi suffering from migraine. According to a large population-based study conducted in the U.S. investigating migraine prevalence, only about half of these sufferers have ever received the correct diagnosis. Those who are not receiving the cor-rect diagnosis of migraine usually receive an incorrect diagnosis of sinus headache or tension-type headache. Forty percent of migraine sufferers could benefit from preventive medication therapy to reduce disability. Only about 12% of migraine sufferers actually receive preven-tion treatment. Thus, thousands of patients in Mississippi that fit the IHS criteria for migraine are not receiving op-timal or even adequate care. It is estimated that the bur-den of migraine in the U.S. eclipses $20 billion annually in direct and indirect costs. Studies have shown that in-tervention with prevention medication can significantly reduce costs by decreasing utilization of MRI scans, visits to physician offices, emergency departments and hospi-talization days.

Migraine is not the only headache condition treated at The Headache Center. The International Headache So-ciety has published guidelines for diagnosing headache disorders. Cluster headache, also known as suicide head-ache, is just as prevalent at multiple sclerosis, but it does not get any funding by the NIH for finding a cure or treat-ment. Other headache disorders diagnosed and treated at The Headache Center include (but are not limited to) the following: hemicrania continua, chronic paroxysmal hemicraina, exertional headache, high and low pressure headaches, tension-type headache, Chiari malforma-tion, trigeminal neuralgia, and cervicogenic headache.

The evidence supports not only treating headache disorders with medications, but with lifestyle modifica-tion and treatment of co-morbidities. Common co-mor-bidities of headache disorders include: anxiety and/or depression, allergy and asthma, obesity and sleep disor-ders. Only at The Headache Center will you get a holis-tic approach aimed treating all the problems associated with headache disorders. The staff works hard to educate and empower the patient to take control of his or her own health and headache condition. This take a lot more time than a 5-minute office visit, and it is reinforced at every follow-up visit.

The clinic does not provide controlled substances for headache disorders. All published literature on treating headaches with controlled substances shows significant-ly worse outcomes when treated with narcotics (opioids) and barbiturates.

Both adult and pediatric headache disorders are treated at The Headache Center. Over 200 providers across the state trust the staff at The Headache Center with their referrals. The Headache Center has a great base of consulting providers that work with the clinic to provide outstanding care and follow-up including radi-ologists, neurologists, cardiologists, ENTs, OBGYNs, psy-chiatrists, psychologists and family providers. Referrals are not necessary. There is not a 6-month wait list. New patients usually can get in within two weeks. We also provide same-day urgent care for established patients. The Headache Center is a preferred provider on all com-mercial insurance plans plus Medicare.CHRISTINA TREPPENDAHL FNP-BC

Ms. Treppendahl is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and The W, where she received a Post-Master’s degree in Family Nursing. She has over 6 years of dedicated head-ache experience. She has a Certificate of Added Qualifi-cation in Headache Medicine by the National Headache Foundation, where she also serves as faculty. Ms. Trep-pendahl is a member of the American Headache Soci-ety, the International Headache Society, the Southern Headache Society, and the Headache Cooperative of New England. She is a nationally recognized speaker on the subject of headache disorders. She is faculty on many advisory boards and is actively involved in multi-center clinical research trials for new FDA-approved emerging treatments.

Mrs. Adams is a Family Nurse Practitioner with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi. She has a Master of Science in Nursing from Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi, where she was the recipient of the Clinical Excellence in Nursing Award for Nurse Practitioners.

Mrs. Adams is a member of the American Headache Society. She is an active participant in continuing education programs, including the 2015 Headache Symposium in Scottsdale, Arizona, and the Comprehensive Migraine Education Program in New York, New York. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society for Nurse Practitioners. In addition, she is a member of the Mississippi Nurses Association and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Her nursing background includes pediatric home health, general pediatrics, pediatric cardiology and adult medical/surgical. A migraine sufferer, Mrs. Adams was drawn to headache medicine because she personally understands the necessity of prevention and treatment to maintain an active quality of life. She aspires to use her knowledge and education to provide hope and relief to others like herself.
