One of the UK’s most progressive and innovative universities, Sheffield Hallam University has a vision to be renowned as a forward thinking, enterprising and business engaged university, known for providing a high quality and cutting edge learning experience.

The Owen Building is the main building at City Campus, providing learning facilities for the Faculty of Development and Society, the Sheffield Business School and the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, with facilities including laboratories, kitchens and studios.

Working closely with main contractors Illingworth & Gregory, Mitton has now completed work on a complete upgrade of the building’s low pressure hot water heating installation,

moving this back to the distribution mains and providing new radiators and distribution pipework.

The contract also called for removal of an existing redundant ventilation system and installation of a new, naturally ventilated system using four solar operated windcatchers located on the roof to provide the fresh air requirements of the space. Designed for optimum energy efficiency, the windcatchers incorporate solar panels which operate internal fans and dampers.

Mitton has also installed a new control system, linking the natural ventilation facility and radiators to interface with the existing Building Management System.

Work has started on the first tranche of Morrisons’ new ‘Store of the Future’, with all mechanical services works provided by Mitton, assisting the main contractor with the refurbishment of food preparation areas and well as alterations and extensions to existing hot and cold water and ventilation systems.

The Store of the Future focus on an innovative and wide-ranging, premium fresh food offer, yet still delivering Morrisons’ great value. Embracing more flexible store formats, they aim to retain

Morrisons’ key differentiators of value, affordability and freshness, coupling this with a premium range of gourmet foods and high quality culinary produce.

Morrisons already has more people preparing more food in store than any other retailer, with fully trained fishmongers, butchers and bakers on hand offering expert knowledge of their product areas.

Major investment in IT facilities is now under way at Mitton, upgrading the company’s technological platforms and aiming to secure the future by putting the infrastructure in place to facilitate planned growth to 2017.

The investment is designed around providing enhanced services for customers, with significantly increased capacity and speeds when connecting in to Mitton’s network.

To achieve this, Mitton is renewing the servers that provide IT solutions for whole of the Mitton Group, including Aftercare, Environmental, Contracting and Air Conditioning. The work is being carried out by Andisa, specialist providers of computer networks and systems, who have worked with Mitton for over a decade.

“This project represents a significant investment for Mitton, replacing our existing servers with new, ‘greener’ Dell models complete with Intel processors,” confirmed Graham Hawe. “The advanced units offer reduced power consumption together with improved performance, enabling us to manage data more efficiently for our clients. This increased productivity and capacity will enable us to implement our planned business strategies across the different divisions within the Group.”

The decision to bring our emergency helpline in-house is already paying dividends for our clients – and in a couple of notable cases, for other people’s clients too!

One recent call resulted in our engineers solving a problem for one of our retail clients, even though the installation in question was not one of ours! As a result, the systems were up and running again almost immediately without any material loss.

As our business and our clients grow, we now have more and more buildings, plant and equipment under our care. Through our nationwide helpdesk service, manned 24/7 by trained engineers with an in-depth knowledge of our systems and services, we are seeing substantial reductions in our average response times.

In addition, this in-house call centre is realising savings for our clients in terms of time and cost by dealing with problems swiftly and professionally, backed up by our nationwide network of engineers to attend on site and availability of spares.

Leeds Trinity University College is a Catholic University College with a student body numbering just under 3,000. Working closely with consulting engineers David Daccus & Associates, Mitton was contracted to provide a new control valve for the chapel heating circuit, together with the installation of inverter drives to the existing teaching block heating pumps in the main boiler room.

The company also provided a new Building Management System connection from the Trend outstation in the boiler room to provide status control, on/off fault and speed control, as well as new computer graphics for the Estates Office Trend 963 terminal.

LEEDS TRINITY UNIVERSITY COLLEGE INVESTING IN THE TECHNOLOGICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

DRIVING EFFICIENCYMITTON’S IN-HOUSE CALL CENTRE AT WORK!

Using our broad ranging expertise across the mechanical services sector, Mitton is increasingly being commissioned to act as Principal Contractor for projects of significant scale.

Alliance Healthcare is one of the UK’s leading distributors and wholesalers of pharmaceutical, medical and healthcare products, offering innovative added-value services to healthcare manufacturers and to dispensing points across the UK.

When the organisation was looking to revise the layout of offices, meeting rooms and store room accommodation at its Head Office in Chessington, Surrey, Mitton was appointed as Principal Contractor to manage the project.

The work involved removal of existing partitioned offices, adding new and amending existing services to accommodate the altered layout, including all associated electrical works.

The Mitton team isolated the drains and removed all heating/cooling ceiling mounted fan coil units within existing cellular office

accommodation, including associated branch pipework. Following construction of the revised partitioned layout, Mitton provided heating/cooling to five new meeting rooms, utilising fan coil units with connections into the existing constant temperature heating pipework and existing chilled water pipework within the ceiling void. Each included a ducted fresh air facility and extract.

Two redundant DX cooling split systems within the roof void were removed, including external condensing units, with the team working outside office hours to minimise disruption.

The constant temperature and chilled water systems were refilled and revented, and essential alterations and extensions made to the automatic controls installations, together with the installation of thermal insulation, new ceilings, doors, carpeting and decorations.

The work was completed on time and to budget, with all electrical installations carried out by specialists from Bradford-based Pitts Wilson Electrical.

Winter boiler breakdowns, water stoppages and even boiler replacements need not mean disruptions to commercial processes, thanks to Mitton’s ingenious portable plant rooms, designed to deliver effective temporary solutions for contracts requiring reliable supplies of heat and hot water during repair or maintenance contracts.

Capable of taking over boiler room and associated functions to allow works to continue uninterrupted, Mitton’s ‘Heat Stores’ and ‘H2O Solutions’ mobile plant rooms are built inside containers and designed to be easily transportable from location to location, simply arriving on site and connecting into existing services.

The plant rooms are kept at Mitton Service Centres nationwide, facilitating a quick response anywhere on the UK mainland. Outside standard planned maintenance projects, Mitton’s Aftercare division aims to have the these flexible alternative supply systems up and running within 24 hours in emergency situations, providing heating and hot water services.

All equipment has been specified and purpose-built to ‘plug and play’ for optimum reliability. Dependent on capacity requirements, the units can be linked together to achieve the levels of supply performance required.

Our Air Conditioning division continues to see sustained rates of growth in all areas, from system installation through to servicing, repair and coolant replacement in line with changing legislation.

We’re seeing significant growth in the retail sector, particularly with smaller stores where there is a requirement for air conditioning across the space. These smaller stores often have no plant room, so air conditioning is a quick install which provides a universal heating and cooling solution across all weathers, especially where no gas supply is available.

With business growing in all areas, from split systems and variable refrigerant volume systems to multisystems, even at this time of year our teams are kept busy, providing year round comfort in all environments, from industrial though to retail.

Under EC regulations, CFCs have now been banned and HCFCs are being phased out. As of January 2010, virgin HCFCs cannot be used for servicing systems. Recycled HCFCs may be used only until January 2015.

In addition, the European Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) requires all air conditioning systems to have an Air Conditioning Energy Assessment (ACEA) at least once every five years. Systems with an output of at least 12kW power should have had their first ACEA before 4 January 2011 (4 January 2013 in Scotland). Systems with an output of more than 250kW should have been assessed by 4 January 2009. Contact Paul Bennett from our Air Conditioning Division if you have any queries.
