MATCH PREVIEWOn Friday evening, Sounders FC hosts expansion side Atlanta United FC in a nationally-televised contest on FS1. Seattle found its first win of the season on March 19 against the New York Red Bulls at CenturyLink Field, which featured goals from Clint Dempsey, Jordan Morris and Harry Shipp in the 3-1 result. Seattle opened the campaign with a 2-1 loss at Houston on March 4, be-fore capturing a point on the road in a 2-2 draw against Montreal.

Under the performance of Head Coach Tata Martino, Atlanta United FC has roared to a 2-1-0 record in its inaugural season. Forward Josef Martinez leads MLS with five goals, but will be sidelined for Friday’s matchup with a left groin injury. Seattle en-ters the match on a 12-match unbeaten streak at home in regular season and postseason play dating back to last season.

SOUNDERS FC SOUNDBYTESMidfielder Harry Shipp:On facing Atlanta: “It will be nice, Atlanta has been excited in the first few games of the year. I have been able to watch a couple of their games. I think they pose unique challenges that we haven’t faced yet. We got a taste of it in preseason, I played a bit in that game, but it was mostly a younger squad. We will try to take stuff from that, but we are confident coming off how we played against the Red Bulls.”

General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey:On Clint Dempsey: “Clint is arguably the best [American] player of all-time and that is the level he has shown with four goals in two games. He has been phenomenal. We were excited for him to go and experience that level, but we are excited for him to come back and keep going for us because he has been scoring for us, too.”

SERIES NOTESFriday’s contest marks the first competitive meeting between the two sides. Seattle and Atlanta met in preseason in February’s Carolina Challenge Cup in Charleston, S.C., a match that Atlanta won 4-2. Atlanta started a near-first-choice lineup against a Sounders team comprised mostly of Academy products and trialists until Seattle’s regular starters entered throughout the second half.

Jordan Morris injured his ankle in the first half against the Red Bulls on March 19, but played 81 minutes. He went directly from the stadium to United States National Team camp ahead of last Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Honduras, but he was a late scratch and was sent home on Saturday while his ankle recovers. He is ruled as questionable alongside defender Oniel Fisher. Defender Brad Evans and midfielder Aaron Kovar both remain out.

MEARS RETURNS TO SEATTLEAtlanta United FC defender Tyrone Mears makes his return to CenturyLink Field this week after playing with Sounders FC from 2015-2016. The English fullback appeared in 65 MLS regular-season appearances for Seattle – all starts – including 32 games played during the club’s 2016 MLS Cup title run. After declining his option at the conclusion of the 2016 campaign, the Rave Green traded Mears’ rights to Atlanta on January 24, where he has played every minute thus far in 2017 for United. Mears signed with Sounders FC on December 29, 2014 following a 14-year career in England and France. In his first season in MLS, he led Seattle with 33 starts and 2,960 minutes at right back, recording one goal and three assists. The Manchester native returned in 2016 by starting all 32 of his appearances and recording two assists as Sounders FC went on to win its first MLS Cup title.

ABOUT ATLANTA Expansion side Atlanta United FC is off to a fast start in its inaugural year, racking up two wins and 11 goals in its first three matches. Led by a potent attack containing four South American playmakers – Josef Martinez, Miguel Al-miron, Yamil Asad and Hector Villalba – Atlanta leads the Eastern Conference thus far in scoring, with the foursome combining to notch nine of the team’s 11 total strikes. However, MLS’ leading goal-scorer Martinez will miss 4-6 weeks with a left quad injury and will not play against Seattle, Atlanta United announced on Tuesday. Martinez has five goals in three games, but injured his leg while with Venezuela last week in CONMEBOL 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying. Atlanta’s trip to Seattle is the first of four matches away from home and six of seven in a six-week span. After its match on Friday, Atlanta will visit Toronto FC, the Montreal Impact and Real Salt Lake before hosting D.C. United and then traveling to New York City FC and the Portland Timbers.

• The Rave Green are 5-4-3 all-time against New York in regular-season play, including a mark of 4-1-1 in Seattle.

• Forward Jordan Morris scored his first goal of the season in the 66th minute. Midfielder Harry Shipp netted his first goal with Sounders FC in the 79th minute. Defender Joevin Jones recorded an assist on both goals, while Nico Lodeiro was also credited with a helper on Shipp’s goal.

• Midfielder Gustav Svensson filled in at centerback for Román Torres, who was serving a one-match suspension.

• Sunday’s fixture fell on the eight-year anniversary of the club’s inaugural match, where the Rave Green also hosted the Red Bulls. Seattle won that match by a score of 3-0.

• The result snapped the Red Bulls’ unbeaten streak of 18 consecutive regu-lar-season matches dating back to July 2016.

• With an attendance of 45,600, Sounders FC improves to 19-3-4 all-time in front of home crowds above 45,000.

QUICK HITS: VS. ATLANTA• On Sunday, Sounders FC is set to host Atlanta United FC in the first match between the two sides.

• The Rave Green are 3-2-1 all-time in their initial contests with expansion clubs, including two wins against New York City FC and Orlando City SC in 2015.

• Atlanta enters the match with an Eastern-Conference high 11 goals in three matches. The squad is set to be without forward Josef Martinez, who leads MLS with five goals, due to a groin injury.

• Seattle’s Joevin Jones, Román Torres, Clint Dempsey and Nicolás Lodeiro are set to return from World Cup Qualifying action.

• Seattle enters the match on a nine-match unbeaten streak at home since July 2016, which is the second-longest streak in club history. Sounders FC also went 3-0-0 during the MLS Cup Playoffs.

EVANS OUT 5-7 WEEKSVeteran Brad Evans has been sidelined for 5-7 weeks due to a calf muscle strain, according to an article by Geoff Baker in The Seattle Times. Evans, 31, is one of two players remaining from the club’s original 2009 squad, alongside captain Osvaldo Alonso. His versatility has proven to be an asset for the Rave Green over the years, and he is the most dangerous penalty-kick taker in club history. He is a perfect 9-9 from the spot in MLS play and converted his attempt during the shootout in the 2016 MLS Cup. Evans has 27 caps for the United States Men’s National Team and scored the game-winning goal in a 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Jamaica.

DEMPSEY CONTINUES TO SHINESounders FC forward Clint Dempsey starred in World Cup Qualifying action over the past week, helping the United States earn four crucial points with four goals in two matches. After a 6-0 rout of Honduras that featured a Dempsey hat trick, the Stars and Stripes tied Panama 1-1 on a goal by Dempsey. The 34-year-old Texas native now sits just one goal behind Landon Donovan’s national record of 57 international goals.

In MLS play, Dempsey has two goals in three appearances this season, includ-ing a goal against the New York Red Bulls on March 19. For both club and country, Dempsey has scored 11 goals in his past eight appearances dating back to last season. Dempsey was sidelined for the home stretch of the 2016 season due to an irregular heartbeat, with his final appearance coming on August 21. Dempsey was the only player in MLS to record at least 10 goals and 10 assists in both 2014 and 2015.

Dempsey underwent a procedure to address the condition shortly after his diagnosis. He returned to the team on September 14 to participate in light ex-ercise, but Dempsey stopped training with the club the following week before his season officially ended.

SOUNDERS FC DRAWS NECAXASeattle Sounders FC took a break from MLS play last Saturday evening at CenturyLink Field, as Brian Schmetzer’s side played Mexico’s Club Necaxa to a 1-1 draw in an international friendly. The contest was Seattle’s 11th all-time international friendly in the MLS era, and the third overall contest against Mex-ican opposition, having previously defeated Chivas Guadalajara 3-1 in 2010 and playing Club Tijuana to a 2-2 draw in 2015.

Seattle struck late into the contest to go ahead 1-0, as Harry Shipp played the role of creator during a Sounders raid into the Necaxa area, offloading the ball to an advancing Alvaro Fernandez. The Uruguayan midfielder hit a right-footed shot aimed at Necaxa’s far post, with goalkeeper Yosgart Gutiérrez left help-less to watch the shot sail past him. The Mexican side found an equalizer seven minutes later, as substitute Ale-jando Diaz converted a Jesús Isijara cross past Seattle netminder Tyler Miller. Scored in the 90th minute, Necaxa’s strike was the final goal of the contest, leaving the scoreline at 1-1.

RAVE GREEN ADD DEPTHComing off the club’s first MLS Cup title, Sounders FC made a slew of offsea-son moves in an attempt to become younger and faster, while also increasing depth. The new additions include two MLS veterans, two Homegrown Players, three S2 promotions and a Swedish midfielder. Goalkeeper Bryan Meredith also returned to the club after his selection in the Re-Entry Draft.

MLS VETERANS

In December, Sounders FC made a pair of trades to land midfielder Harry Shipp and forward Will Bruin. Bruin has 50 goals and 20 assists in his six professional seasons in MLS. In addition to a career-high 12 tallies in 2012, he also reached double digits in the scoring column with 10 goals in 2014 and 11 in 2015. A veteran with extensive postseason experience, Bruin has six goals in 13 appearances in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, including a Houston franchise record of four strikes in 2012.

Shipp spent the 2016 season with Eastern Conference finalist Montreal Impact, starting 20 of his 27 appearances and recording two goals and three assists. He was traded to Montreal from the Chicago Fire, where he spent the 2014 and 2015 campaigns after signing as a Homegrown Player out of Notre Dame. Shipp burst onto the scene with a stellar rookie season in 2014, tallying seven goals and six assists in 33 appearances as an AT&T MLS Rookie of the Year finalist.

HOMEGROWN PLAYERS

In January, Sounders FC signed Seyi Adekoya and Henry Wingo to Home-grown Player contracts. Adekoya, 21, recorded 20 goals and eight assists in three seasons for the Bruins, including 12 tallies as a sophomore in 2015. The Lakeside High School graduate previously played for Sounders FC Academy U-18 squad in the 2013-2014 campaign. Wingo, also 21, spent three seasons at the University of Washington, making 56 appearances and earning All-Pac-12 Second Team honors in 2015 and 2016. Prior to his time at Washington, Wingo spent the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 campaigns with the Sounders FC Academy.

S2 PROMOTIONS

Defender Nouhou signed a contract in late January. The 19-year-old joins the First Team following a 2016 campaign in which he appeared in 24 games for Sounders FC 2, the club’s USL side. On March 2, Seattle added midfielders Jordy Delem and Zach Mathers to the First Team roster, both of whom spent 2016 with S2.

INTERNATIONAL ADDITION

Gustav Svensson joined Sounders FC in late January. The 30-year-old comes to Seattle following a 10-year career in Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine and China, where he most recently played with Guangzhou R&F of the Chinese Super League.

S2 BEGINS 2017 CAMPAIGNDespite a fifth-minute goal from 2017 MLS SuperDraft selection Brian Nana-Sinkam, Sounders FC 2 (0-1-0, 0 points) opened its third USL campaign with a 2-1 home loss to Sacramento Republic FC (1-0-0, 3 points) on Sunday after-noon. The contest marked the third consecutive season S2 has faced Republic FC in the season’s first match at Starfire Stadium, with the visitors winning each of the past two fixtures. The Rave Green jumped out to an early lead from a fifth-minute goal by Nana-Sinkam. On a free-kick from outside the area, forward Irvin Parra sent a rolling through-ball into the center of the 18-yard-box. The pass found a streaking Nana-Sinkam, who delivered a hard strike that bounced off the underside of the crossbar and across the line.

SOUNDERS FC vs. ATLANTA UNITED FC | MARCH 31, 2017 - 7:00 P.M. PT

SOUNDERS FC HISTORYHEAD COACH BRIAN SCHMETZER

After leading Sounders FC to one of the most improb-able comebacks in MLS history, Brian Schmetzer was named the club’s second-ever Head Coach on Novem-ber 2, 2016. Upon assuming the interim manager role on July 26, 2016 following the departure of Sigi Schmid, Seattle sat in ninth place in the Western Conference with a 6-12-2 record. Under Schmetzer, Sounders FC finished the season with an 8-2-4 record and a fourth-place finish, becoming the first team in MLS history to make the MLS Cup Playoffs after having 20 or fewer points through the first 20 matches of the season. He

is the first coach in MLS history to lead his team to the MLS Cup title after assuming the Head Coach position midseason.

A longtime Sounders FC assistant and former USL Sounders manager, Schmetzer entered his eighth season as Top Assistant Coach in 2016, a position he retained since December 22, 2008. He is one of the Puget Sound soccer community’s most recognizable and respected figures after playing and coaching for the region’s top professional franchises since 1980.

Schmetzer served seven seasons as the Head Coach of the Sounders’ United Soccer League’s First Division club from 2002-2008 before making the jump to MLS. He guided Seattle to USL-1 championships in 2005 and 2007, and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinal advancements in 2007 and 2008.

Schmetzer has 14 years of coaching experience and a 15-year background playing at the professional level. He was a member of six championship teams during that span. In addition to the two USL championships, his teams also twice won the Commissioner’s Cup for the league’s best record (2002, 2007), while also qualifying for the playoffs six of seven years. He was chosen USL-1 Coach of the Year in 2002 after going 23-4-1. The Sounders were league runners-up in 2004. His overall regular season record in the USL era was 100-57-41.

Previously, he was assistant to former United States National Team defender Fernando Clavijo with the Seattle SeaDogs from 1996-1997. Seattle won the Continental Indoor Soccer League title in 1997.

A Seattle native, Schmetzer was coached by his father, Walt, as a youth. His team won seven out of 10 state youth championships. He signed with the
