Modeling a culture ofthoughtfulness
#ItStartsWithUs#ItStartsWithUs
At Mohonasen, we believe it is our responsibility not only to teach but more importantly to model character in our day-to-day actions. We’ve used the phrase “It Starts With Us” frequently throughout the past year as a reminder that we all have a role in modeling positive behavior for our students. Last year, we laid the foundation with our theme “Constructing a Culture of Acceptance and Adaptability.” We talked about important issues that challenge our society, and we formed a committee to address issues of acceptance and adaptability. That committee helped bring Sweethearts and Heroes, a program designed to empower students in the face of bullying behavior, to the district. Also last year, professional development focused on understanding the many challenging issues our students face both at home and at school.
But our work is not done. We know that what we do and say can have a profound effect on our students and school community – and so we are have
purposefully chosen to build on last year’s theme with a focus this year on “Modeling a Culture of Thoughtfulness.” We believe “thoughtfulness” encompasses a lot, because when we are thoughtful, we are also respectful, reflective, understanding, compassionate, accepting, adaptable … all those characteristics that simply make us kind people.
We’ll continue using #ItStartsWithUs on social media to highlight activities that support this year’s theme – and also as a reminder that we each have a responsibility to model thoughtfulness. Please take a moment to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook if you don’t already. You’ll also find samples of how the district works to address our theme on the pages of this year’s calendar.
Please join us as we work to create an even more thoughtful culture at Mohonasen. Together, we can create and embody a culture every one of us can be proud of.

LABOR DAY
Modeling dedication Bradt Primary School teacher Lynette Griesemer prepared for 12 years to watch her kindergarten students cross the stage at graduation in June 2017. After making a promise to them in their first year as Mohonasen students to attend their high school graduation, she followed through and showed up to cheer on her 22 former students and present them with a personalized letter of congratulations. Mrs. Griesemer said she plans to continue this tradition for all of her former kindergarten students until 2033 – when her last kindergarten class will have finished their senior year – no matter what obstacles come her way. Her dedication is a shining example of commitment, love and Mohonasen pride.. #ItStartsWithUs

Modeling kindness Bus drivers at Mohonasen receive extensive training to prepare them for the important work they do throughout the school year. Our bus drivers are the first and last faces our students see each school day, and they contribute to a positive school climate for each and every one of their riders. Our drivers show kindness and respect to our students and underscore the importance of a safe and supportive environment. #ItStartsWithUs

Modeling giving Members of the National Junior Honor Society at Draper Middle School integrate the spirit of giving into their activities throughout the year. In 2016-17, the students took part in helping out at the City Mission in Schenectady, an organization that provides resources for community members in need. They also spent time assembling craft packages for patients at the Albany Children’s Hospital (pictured below). The students are able to learn about the power of giving, empowering others and setting a positive example for their peers. #ItStartsWithUs

Modeling helpfulness Tech-savvy students from Mohonasen High School used their knowledge to help senior citizens sharpen their computer and electronic device skills. On an evening at the Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen, students worked with members of the Rotterdam Senior Citizens Association to set up email accounts, troubleshoot technical questions, discuss cybersecurity and find interesting smartphone and tablet apps that helped them keep tabs on their health, improve their sleep and have a bit of fun. #ItStartsWithUs

Modeling cooperation Members of Pinewood School’s faculty and administration make up One Pinewood, a committee formed in summer 2016 to inspire a positive culture in the building and work toward improved student success. Committee members collaborate to do what is best for the students by looking for and assuming the best in each other. In its first year, the committee has helped open up lines of communication as students and staff continue to make Pinewood a place, “Where great students emerge!” #ItStartsWithUs

Modeling acceptance Sweethearts and Heroes, an organization devoted to educating communities about
the impact of bullying, visited Mohonasen schools in 2017 to give students and staff a look into the devastating effects of bullying on students. The group of speakers discussed personal stories of loss and triumph and shared resources and tools audience members could use to help combat any bullying they encounter. Through acceptance, the students learned, they had the power to become someone’s hero. #ItStartsWithUs

Modeled after the Global Angel Wings Project, the wings were intended to remind viewers that they are all “angels of Earth.” Since 2012, colorful wings have made their mark in countries around the globe, continuing to spread a message of positivity. #ItStartsWithUs

Modeling inclusion Each year, Mohonasen High School students with and without disabilities team up for an exciting spring season of basketball. Over several weeks, the unified basketball team members practice their skills and bring their game faces to compete against other unified teams in the region. In addition to providing students a fun, healthy and engaging athletic opportunity, the program emphasizes the value of teamwork, positive sportsmanship and solidarity. #ItStartsWithUs

Modeling learning Draper Middle School students share their love of science with younger Mohonasen peers during special Demo Day presentations, such as the one pictured above. Draper science students visit Bradt Primary School to set up learning stations featuring hands-on projects in order to break down scientific concepts into engaging, grade-appropriate lessons. The Draper students serve as role models, demonstrating their knowledge and love of learning in this activity that connects students across schools and emphasizes the power of education. #ItStartsWithUs

Modeling empowerment Just weeks before graduation, Mohonasen seniors participate in a Cap and Gown Walk – a tour that takes them to their former stomping grounds around Mohonasen to celebrate their accomplishments and inspire younger students to work hard. The high school students walk through the halls of Draper, Pinewood and Bradt, where they are greeted with the smiling faces of former teachers and the cheers of future Mohonasen graduates. This symbolic event empowers students to dream about what they can achieve through dedication to their education and hard work. #ItStartsWithUs

Modeling character Mohonasen High School collaborates with the Schenectady County Human Rights Commission and seven participating Schenectady County districts to work with students in Study Circles. Each school sends students to represent their district as they work collaboratively and with trained facilitators to discuss human and civil rights issues, race relations, LGBTQ topics and more. Students in Study Circles have helped found Mohonasen traditions, like the popular Hugs Day, and work in creative ways to address school climate, fight against stereotypes and barriers and bring their understanding and positivity to their peers. #ItStartsWithUs

Sign up to receive school notifications in your inbox!By signing up for School News Notifier (SNN), parents and residents can receive e-mail updates and information about district activities, the budget, building projects, closings and delays and much more. SNN is a free, opt-in e-mail alert system (users can also receive text messages for school closings/delays). Users can choose to receive any or all of the alerts, and they can unsubscribe at any time. Go to www.mohonasen.org and click on the SNN link on the right-hand side of the page to sign up today!
Release of Student Directory InformationFrom time to time, student directory information is published on the Mohonasen website, in school publications or released to the media to recognize student achievement or depict activities within the Mohonasen School District. Parents who object to the disclosure of their child’s directory information should notify BOTH the superintendent of schools and their child’s building principal – in writing – on or before September 15 of each school year. For more details, see the “Release of Directory Information” notice on the district website at www.mohonasen.org.
Asbestos ManagementAs required by the EPA, school districts must annually notify parents/guardians and employees of the availability of the asbestos management plan and planned or in-progress inspections, re-inspections, response actions, and post-response actions. Mohonasen conducts periodic surveillances every six months and a re-inspection every three years. The Mohonasen management plan is available for review during normal business hours by contacting Joseph Mayo at 518-356-8228. There are currently no construction projects scheduled that will disturb asbestos containing building material.
Pesticide Neighbor Notification LawMohonasen has practiced Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for several years. This is the process for managing,
preventing and suppressing pests with minimal impact on human health and the environment. Pesticides are only used as a last resort; however, it is possible that they may be needed periodically. Following state law, Mohonasen maintains a list of staff and parents/guardians who wish to receive notification when certain pesticide applications are used. If you would like to be added to this list, contact Joseph Mayo at 518-356-8228. More information, including a notification request form, can be found on our website.
Closings and DelaysClosings, such as an unplanned early dismissal, are communicated via an automated phone messaging system to all phone numbers parents have provided. Please note, the district does NOT use the automated phone system for snow day announcements. Closings, as well as snow day announcements, are posted on the web at www.mohonasen.org and on Facebook, sent out via e-mail/text message through School News Notifier (SNN) and are also released to all local TV stations and major radio stations. No matter what grade level, make sure your children know what to do if they arrive home unexpectedly and you’re not there. For safety’s sake, now is the time to create a plan.
Release of Student Information Under NCLBPursuant to the federal education legislation No Child Left Behind, Mohonasen must disclose to military recruiters, upon request, the names, addresses and telephone num-bers of high school students. The district must also notify parents of their right, and the right of the child, to request that the district not release such information without prior written parental consent. Parents (or students 18 or older) wishing to exercise their option to withhold their consent to the release of the above information to military recruiters are asked to sign and return a form, which is available in the high school office.
Private/Parochial TransportationParents who want Mohonasen to provide transportation for their children to approved parochial schools are responsible for filing the Request for Parochial Transportation form with the Mohonasen Transportation Department by April 1, 2018. Forms are available on the district website
at www.mohonasen.org (see Transportation page). If you cannot access the district website, please call the Transportation Department at 518-356-8260 for a form. Please note that on staff-only days, there will be no private/parochial transportation. Questions? Call the Mohonasen Transportation Department at 518-356-8260.
Mohonasen Parent Access: SchoolToolAll high school, middle school and Pinewood parents can use SchoolTool to access their child's attendance, academic and discipline records online. High school and middle school interim reports and report cards are available only through SchoolTool. (Elementary report cards are sent home in take-home folders.) See calendar dates for when these reports are scheduled to be made available online. In addition, teachers will update grades and attendance information in SchoolTool on a regular basis. To sign up for SchoolTool, or if you are unable to access the Internet, please contact the high school, middle school or Pinewood main office.
Dignity for All Students ActNew York's Dignity for All Students Act seeks to provide the state's public school students with a safe and supportive environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunt-ing, harassment, and bullying (including cyberbullying) on school property, a school bus and/or at a school function. The Act includes, but is not limited to, acts of discrimination, bullying and harassment based on a student's race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender (defined to include gender identity or expression), or sex.
