Director Chella Thangaiah, who had penned the lyrics of the number ‘Chinna Machan Sevatha Machan’ which had 13 million viewers in YouTube, is set for his second directorial release ‘Karimugan’ set for an early No-vember release.

Much like his debut effort ‘Thirudu Pogadha Manasu’ which was a musical journey with the now popular Senthil Ganesh as the lead, Thangaiah is at his home ground where love is the base and actions aplenty with a score of fringe artistes doing their job to the letter.

On a script line of the hard-ships encountered by the teen-aged lovers due to no fault of theirs, the director said the character of Kanish essayed by Ganesh is hard to get for someone in only his second film. “As the title says, his face has the elephant mask over it, shadowed by the rustiness in the upbringing. Senthil was my only choice as the character needed a voice to establish his credentials as a singer. After much scouting, found the Kerala girl Gayathri to fit into the character where the eyes had a lot to say of the power of love.”

The findings showed that diets that contribute to inflammation are linked to a higher risk of

chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression.

Foods that have been positively related to concentrations of in-flammatory markers include to-matoes, carbonated beverages, vegetables other than green leafy and dark yellow vegetables, pro-cessed meat, red meat, organ meat and fish other than dark-meat fish. A team found that 11.1 per cent of the participants developed

kidney failure over 14 years of follow-up.

Earlier, a study, published, highlighted that polluted air can also increase the risk of CKD which occurs when a person’s kidneys are damaged, or cannot filter blood properly.The study showed that people with diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or heart disease are at an increased risk of developing CKD.

The monsoon is around the corner and residents now have a good opportu-nity to volunteer to under-take relief works, should a need arise, along with the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion and other government agencies.

During the December 2015 floods many resi-dents’ welfare associations in the neighbourhoods of Mogappair East and West and Anna Nagar were ac-tively involved in clearing the fallen trees and drain-ing the clogged water chan-nels in the localities. But that was an entirely inde-pendent initiative. How-ever, now, the Greater Chennai Corporation has invited volunteers to work with it in case of any natu-ral calamities as the power of the government agen-cies need to be merged with the power of the people for effective relief work.

According to an official of the Ambattur Zone of the Greater Chennai Cor-poration, residents’ welfare associations and individual residents of Mogappair and Anna Nagar who wish to offer their voluntary services during the mon-soon can register on the website www.chennai.cor-poration.gov.in or they can do so at our zonal office. “Presently we are asking them to share only basic details such as their name,

age, address, phone num-ber and e-mail ID so that we can reach out to them should we require any help during the monsoon,” the official explained.

According to the offi-cial, this initiative would help to channelise the ener-gies of all volunteers better. “If they function indepen-dently they will remain scattered and we may not be able to contact them. Once they are all regis-tered, it will help us plan relief operations better and also help us to address civic issued in a stream-lined manner,” the official added.

Desilting as well as construction of s t o r m w a t e r

drains is being carried out in full pace in various parts of the Mogappair neigh-bourhood ahead of this year's monsoon. However, a section of the residents feels that the work should have been completed much earlier instead of being undertaken just be-fore the onset of rains.

In recent days, people have noticed workers en-gaged by contractors of civic agencies undertaking desilting work in existing storm water drains as well as repairing and construc-tion of flood water carriers in parts of Mogappair in-cluding Electricity Board Road and Pari Salai in Mogappair East.

The workers have been busy removing the slabs that had covered the storm water drains and removing the silt from the drains. "It is very important to keep

the storm water drains clean before the onset of monsoon. These drains are dry but are clogged with waste particularly polythene bags and stones. Workers have been remov-ing them as polythene covers would obstruct the flow of water during heavy rains and consequently lead to flooding on the roads," explained Rajesh-wari, a resident of an apartment complex on Electricity Board Road.

Likewise at some spots in the neighbourhood where the drains were broken or had disappeared over time due to encroach-ment and dumping of concrete and debris, con-struction work is on to relay them. Workers have been deepening the drains and concretising them.

"At least now the civic authorities have taking steps to desilt the storm water drains and repair them before the rainy sea-son. That much we need to acknowledge," said

Vishnu, a resident of Mogappair East. Howev-er, his neighbour Nelson felt that the move was be-lated. "Already the Indian Meteorological Depart-ment (Met office as it called in popular parlance) had issued a warning about the onset of mon-soon. But you look at this the work on constructing a storm water drain on certain stretches such as Pari Salai is just ongoing. What if it rains now? Would they not have to abandon the works mid-way adding to the woes of residents? That is why I am saying that such works must be completed during summer season so that residents are not put to any sort of inconvenience dur-ing rains," he argued.

Velammal Main school organized an awareness rally on the negative impacts of dengue. As a part of this initiative, Students raised slogans and carried placards on the topic.
