A battery vehicle station has been functioning in

Nerkundram for over one-and-a-half months, close to the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) headquarters, to facilitate conservancy operations in certain wards of the Greater Chennai Corporation.

According to official sources, as many as 114 battery operated vehicles are being stationed at the premises. These battery operated vehicles, a new addition to the conser-vancy operations in the Chennai metropolitan

city, are used to collect and clear garbage from Ward 143 to Ward 148 of the Greater Chennai Corporation.

Inquiries reveal that the workers engaged in the task have been as-signed specific duties. “The battery operated vehicles are used for col-lection of household waste on a door to door basis daily. The task of collecting household gar-bage has to be completed by noon. Thereafter the garbage is segregated as biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes at specified bins in the streets before being taken to the dumping yard in

Perungudi in the south-ern suburbs of the city,” an official source ex-plained.

Once this shift is com-pleted, the workers have to undertake the task of collection of garbage from hotels, restaurants, malls, temples and com-mercial establishments during the afternoon.

“Their work doesn’t end here. At night time, they have to carry out garbage collection exer-cise on a large sale from the main areas which are identified as Bus Route Roads (BRR in Corpora-tion parlance),” ex-plained the source. Only then all the garbage is

transported to the dump-ing yard in Perungudi.

Sources said that there is no electricity facility in the station. Instead the battery vehicles are charged only using gen-erators. “Each vehicle has to be charged for up to three hours for it to approximately cover a distance of 60 kilometres which is enough for a day,” the source said.

Conservancy workers hailed the facility as they earlier they used to col-lect garbage on tricycles and pedalling it was dif-

ficult when there was an overload. “Only problem now we have is that households don’t segre-gate garbage despite sev-eral awareness cam-paigns. This puts a bur-den on us,” said a conser-vancy worker.

Manoj, a resident of Mogappair, said house-holds must take the ini-tiative to segregate gar-bage at source so that the conservancy workers are not troubled. “The con-servancy workers do a divine job. We must re-spect them by segregat-ing garbage at source,” he said.

Areas under the Ambat-tur zone of the Greater Chennai Corporation and Avadi Municipality will now get a further facelift with the State Government unveiling civic infrastruc-ture and fund allocations.

Last week, Chief Minis-ter Edappadi K Palaniswa-mi unveiled various pack-ages for the neighbour-hood, via videoconferenc-ing from the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretariat in Fort St George. According to Gov-ernment officials in one of the packages, Rs 95.77 crore worth sewage net-work in Ambattur was in-augurated. “This project has taken shape after a long delay,” an official said. Elaborating he added that originally the State Gov-ernment had approved four packages for the project

way back in 2008. “Work did not, however, begin. There were several delays coming up our way. We had issues with contractors and also problems in iden-tifying sites for pumping stations,” he said.

In 2010, there was some progress, when the Chen-nai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB or Me-trowater in common par-lance), awarded works to a private company to provide 12,100 house service con-nections in seven wards. “The progress of the work was tardy forcing us to

cancel the contract in 2016 – i.e. six years later – and thereafter the project was split into six packages and executed by multiple con-tractors,” an official said.

Residents in some wards in areas such as Mogap-pair, Ambattur, Anna Nagar Western Extension and even Korattur would benefit from the sewage network. “It will help re-duce pollution in water bodies as the sewage was being let into it,” he ex-plained.

Much like the value of an elephant not diminishing after its life span, the movie which is the first and last one of VJ Chitra or fondly known as Chithu is a tribute to the talent bank. Ad-mittedly, the makers were not cashing in on the sympathy wave as the movie had been in the making two years ago. That the timing of the release is in the right arc should do good to the well or-chestrated honest ef-forts of debut director J Sabarish. Doffing many hats including penning the script, dialogues and editing, the actor-turned direc-

tor is well served by a strong line up of ar-tistes in the form of Sri Ranjani, Nizhalgal Ravi, Delhi Ganesh and the ever depend-able Devadarshini.

The girl in ques-tion Chitra gets the wanton support and a f f e c t i o n r i g h t through the wel l crafted plot. True, there is the flip side, with many segments giving a strong feel of a documentary and the set pieces. Clearly the one is the visually challenged girl where she mouths a few ser-mons.

You get a feel that there had been a pre-

monition of Chitra's end during the course of watching. Dia-logues were on those lines where the Mul-lai girl harps on the importance of doing good to others while stressing on the im-portance of a mean-ingful life.

The icy hands of death had snatched a talent which one can never decipher as to how far it would have gone. The best tribute is to bring it to the silver screen where everyone gets to see the darling of the small screen.

Alas, for one last time!.

New sleep study warns against going to bed early

Producer Dilli Babu K of DBK International Films Pvt. Ltd is producing a first of its kind fantasy film titled ‘ May-amukhi’ laced with social is-sues as the main backdrop. Written and directed B.M. Ravi, the film has a female-centric premise featuring ac-tress Mano Chitra in lead role. She has already gained a great response for her performances in movies like Innoruvan, Aval Peyar Thamizharasi, Neer Para-vai and Veeram. Telugu actor Ravi Teja Varma makes his debut in Tamil cinema. Sath-ya Dev, Thoothukudi fame

Karthika, Omni, Swathi and few more prominent actors are a part of this star-cast.

With fantasy genre becom-ing the favourite pick of uni-versal audiences, Mayamukhi has lots of promising elements in terms of spiritual essence and entertainment aspects to enthrall the family crowds, especially kids and women. Although, the film belongs to fantasy genre, it will have a strong social issue as the main plot.

Prakash N Padma is han-dling cinematography, Jeyan Bala is composing music to

the lyrics of Kadhal Madhi. Daniel-Santhosh (Editing), Chandira Mohan (Art), Star Vijay (Stunts), Sai Bharathi (Choreogra-phy), Vijay Abhi-manyu (Co-Direc-tor), Pandian Arivaa-li (Production Man-ager), Suresh Sugu-D h a r m a D u r a i (PRO) are the other technicians.

Simultaneously made in Tamil and Telugu, the film is produced at a grand scale budget and is

now at the final stage of shoot-ing and is nearing completion at brisk pace.

“Early to bed, early to rise”, has been a good adage since olden times which we have been told right since our childhood. However, the ar-rival of 24x7 television, Over The Top (OTT) entertainment platforms, smartphones and a global round-the-clock work culture, disrupted the human sleep cycle.

Those with a disturbed sleep pattern and sleep apnea were advised by doctors to go to bed early and avoid watch-ing the screen at bed time. But now a new sleep study has claimed that going to bed be-fore 10 pm could increase possibilities of a person get-

ting heart ailments. Similar metabolic diseases and life-style disorders could be trig-gered by sleeping beyond midnight as well.

One of the doctors, who were part of this study pub-lished recently in the medical journal ‘Sleep Medicine’ hap-pens to Dr V Mohan, a lead-ing diabetologist from our very own Chennai metropolis. The study has since become a hot topic of discussion on social media, particularly Twitter with many users shar-ing their views on this on the microblogging site. The Twit-terati, as users of the Twitter platform are called colloqui-

ally, have been intensely de-bating what they should do now – sleep early or late?

The study essentially fo-cusses on the right time to go to bed, which its authors feel should be between 10 pm and midnight and not earlier or beyond.

The study says those who slept before 10 pm on a regu-lar basis had a probability of a nine per cent increase in incidence of heart ailments, as compared to those who went to bed between 10 pm and midnight. On the other hand, if people slept past midnight then the incidence increases by 10 per cent.

Dr Mohan, has been quot-ed as saying that the study seeks to establish that it is not just important to sleep up to eight hours a day but also at the “right time”.

Essentially the study has recommended that the best time to go to bed is between 10 pm and midnight as sleep-ing early or late tampers with circadian rhythms i.e. 24-hour cycles that are part of the body’s internal clock.

Irrespective of the various studies on sleep cycle, it is al-ways better to consult your personal physician to decide on your sleep pattern.

The primary reason that this Post office is able to retain

most of its customers, mostly senior citizens numbering thousands is because of the postal sav-ings account. I had gone to the Post Office on Feb 26 (Thursday) after a long break and the present for-malities at the entrance took me by surprise. It reminded me of entering a clinic to meet the doctor after taking a token for a checkup. A make shift ta-ble with a person who noted down the name, mobile phone number then asked for the reason and then issued a token. What for he wanted the phone number God only knows?

I just told him that I needed an update in my pass book. He replied that

I need to wait. There were many other senior citi-zens, mostly women who were made to sit below the trees. Moving the chairs here and there to get a shady place and for some it was like a game of musi-cal chairs where the lucky and smart ones got a chair to sit. In breaks the person would come out and call TOKEN 51, No 52, No 53 and so on. There were some who had taken a token early and could walk in to their whims and fan-cies.

On the contrary, the agents who normally sat at entrance had the privilege to barge in with a bunch of pass books and forms (no restrictions). Their walk-ins every now and then did delay my process, thus stealing much of my valuable time. There were

a few who could side step in without a token saying “enquiry” and got their work done in a jiffy.

This does not augur well for this sought of at-titude does take a toll on the others waiting for their turn to come. There is no proper system. The Postal department should stick on the token system for all

or else have a separate counter just for enquiry or pass book entry. To add to the cup of woe, nowadays the SMS is not sent to the mobile phone. Had this been working it would have avoided one the trou-ble of going to the Post Office.

It took me almost about one and half hours just to

update my pass book. I would not have minded if a proper system was fol-lowed. But it was not to be. It was when a young person just walked in without a token and got his pass book updated before me when I really lost my cool. I did ques-tion the lady staff seated at the third counter but in

no way did it help. The time lost is lost but this situation would not have risen had I overlooked the temporary norms or hood-winked the newly ap-pointed front office staff.

The Anna Nagar Post office is known for its ramp for the elders and the installation of the solar power units. But then the basic needs of giving the customers a proper place to sit, to follow or not to follow the token system, or provide a separate counter for enquiry or update of pass books. Uniformity in whatever they did would do a world of good for the customers.

All said and done, the account holders, particu-larly senior citizens need a better deal.

Ms. Gowri Ashokan, a lawyer by qualification and resident of Mogap-pair East, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Tamil Nadu State C o m m i s s i o n f o r Women. The Com-mission was reconsti-tuted by Governor Banwarlilal Purohit in exercise of powers conferred by Sub Sec-tion (1) and (2) of Sec-tion 3 of the Tamil Nadu State Commis-sion for Women Act, 2008 (Tamil Nadu Act 31 of 2008). The constitution of the Commission was notified in a Government Order dated February 16 by the State De-partment of Social Welfare and Nutritious Meal Programme.

Five other persons were appointed members of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women. They are R Jamuna of Mylapore, T Deepa of Korattur, T Shylaja of GKM Colony, B Dakshayani of Virugambakkam and Manisha Chordia of Alwarpet.

The Chairperson Gowri Ashokan is a resident of an apartment complex on Velammal School Road in Mogap-pair East. Incidentally, Gowri Asho-kan was in March 2019 appointed as

the City Public Prose-cutor by the Govern-ment. She was the first woman appointed to the post, which had until then remained a male bastion. Prior to that she was the City Public Prosecutor in-charge for a few months before the full time

posting order was given to her. The City Public Prosecutor has the im-portant task of representing the State Government during any prosecution, appeal or other proceedings in the City Sessions Court.

While Gowri Ashokan could not be reached for comment on her new position, a cross-section of residents of Mogappair neighbourhood, whom Mogappair Mail contacted expressed happiness over the devel-opment.

“I did read about the constitution of the new team for the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women. How-ever, I was not aware that the Chair-person is a resident of Mogappair East. It is indeed happy that someone from our neighbourhood has been appointed to head this important panel which deals with women-relat-ed issues,” said Soundarya, a resident of Mogappair.

“I think we must have a neigh-bourhood association to felicitate and interact with her as well as other high achieving individuals from our local-ity. But we hardly get to know each other these days. In the good old days that Mogappair was evolving into a residential neighbourhood there used to be greater interactions among various associations,” recalled Sam-bandan, an old time resident.
