Fall is such a busy time! School is back

in session, extracurricular activities kick

in -- and along with all that, we know

that soon we will be preparing for the

holidays. It’s not surprising that we find

ourselves looking for ways to make life

smoother, easier, more organized. Moms

in the Know is a resource to help guide you out of the mad circles and onto

a positive parenting path.

Each of our quarterly issues has a focus: knowledge, health, home, or

recreation. In this issue we turn to knowledge -- helping you and your

children learn and grow. We have a great article on getting your child ready

to read, another about learning through play, and a discussion of things your

children need to know that they won’t learn in school.

But it isn’t just this issue -- Moms in the Know is always about sharing the

knowledge. In addition to our articles, we hope to guide you to family

friendly businesses, and make you aware of all the great events in Charleston

with our Dates to Remember calendar. We also provide you with time saving

and helpful tips. Please get in touch with us to tell us what you’ve learned,

or what you need to know. You can call us at 843-573-4846 or email us at

[email protected]. We always have great information and contests

on our facebook page; come check us out, and let us know what you’re

thinking about in your busy life as a mom.

When your kids receive

a lot of presents at once,

pull a few aside and put them in a special

container that the kids can’t get to. Do the

same when they attend a party and come

home with a bunch of party favors and

school events that lead to a book bag of

stuff. When your family is getting ready for

travel, pull out a few “new” toys/games to

keep them occupied and happy. This also

works well when a family activity gets

Getting Ready to Read

Corbin Bettencourt

K I n D E R G a R T E n a n D F I R S T G R a D E

Kindergarten and First Grade are an exciting introduction to school. Children seem to

grow dramatically in so many ways. One of the most exciting developments during this

time is acquisition of early reading skills. Most young children are learning the alphabet

and are catching on to the relationship between the letters and their sounds. They

enjoy detecting and creating rhyme and word play. at this age children begin to build a

sight word vocabulary through consistent exposure to words in their environment such

as family members’ names, signs, packaging and frequently encountered words in the

books that are read to them. Children become storytellers themselves. Often they will

recount events orally or through

drawing pictures and adding

text, wanting others to read

about their excitement. They

do so by spelling the sounds

of the words in a way that the

reader can recognize them,

phonetic spelling. These little

communicators and learners are

eager to embrace the formal

reading instruction that will

begin in Kindergarten.

ReadtoR E a D YGetting

Page 17: Moms in the Know : October 2011 - January 2012

Getting Ready to Read

P h O n O l O G I C a l a W a R E n E S S

Phonological awareness is crucial to success in early reading. It is the “umbrella”

that overarches the ability to manipulate individual sounds, recognize the boundaries

of words, syllables and sentences, understand that words are made up of sounds

and likewise sentences are made up of words and to manipulate individual sounds

in words. Therefore, when parent and child play alliterative games or make up silly

words by changing beginning sounds, the child becomes sensitized to initial sounds in

words. Playing with words in rhyming games, making up rhymes or finding rhyming

words while reading poetry together, or asking the child to supply the rhyming word

when reciting nursery rhymes, requires the child to listen for the sounds that words

begin with or end with. Clapping or hopping or taking steps while saying multi-syllable

names of family or friends or unusual sounding words that have lots of syllables such

as supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, are not only fun, but are auditory and kinesthetic

reinforcement to recognition of syllables. Pointing to the words on the page as parents

read to their child and tapping the ending punctuation of sentences with a finger, helps

draw the child’s attention to the boundaries of the words and that statement. It also

reinforces the left to right progression of writing and reading.

If parents are requested to take dictation of a story that will accompany a child’s

drawing, this is a wonderful opportunity to role model for the child. The parent might

sound out each word as he writes it and then read back what has been dictated, tracking

the words with fingers when reading them. Each activity is a learning experience for a

child, especially when embedded in play. Children’s play is their work and is a natural

way for them to learn key phonological skills that are the foundation for early reading

success.

The Power of Play

Opportunities to play are really opportunities to learn. During play children

learn and practice social skills, develop cognitive abilities like problem

solving, and refine language skills. Renowned psychologist, Jean Piaget,

summed it up best:

“Play is a child’s work.”

T O Y T O S O C I a l T O O l

In the beginning, toys and objects serve as play things for

infants to suck, grab and swat and to eventually push, pull,

drop and stack in an exploratory manner. It’s common to

see a 1-year-old pick up an object and look at it as if he is

thinking: What is this? how can I play with this? What will

happen if I drop it? Will it move? Does it smell? Make noise?

Through experimentation with toys and objects and through

trial and error, the young child begins to make sense of the

world. Sometime between 12 to 18 months, children begin

to use toys and objects for more than just a function, but as

tools for initiating social interactions. Professor and author,

David W. Kritt stated it best, “play serves as a catalyst

for development…so that objects cease to dominate the

meaning of situations.” It is the social encounters achieved through the use of toys that

bring meaning to the child.

Melanie Slattery

Page 21: Moms in the Know : October 2011 - January 2012

Moms in the Know® 19

The Power of Play

Toys are also tools for imaginative play. To the toddler, a beanbag is no longer just a soft

weighted object that can be held or tossed. It becomes a telephone to hold at your ear,

cheese to put on a sandwich, or a present to give to a friend. What can you as a parent

do to support your child as she experiments with toys and begins to use them as social

tools? Provide your child with stimulating toys as well as opportunities to explore them

at home or in playgroups. Play programs, like Gymboree Play & Music, foster interactive

activities and provide developmentally appropriate toys for the young mind to explore.

Young children enjoy learning through physical play because it helps them refine budding

motor skills. It teaches them to control their bodies, develop confidence and understand

their abilities and limits. Physical play can also redirect frustration and pent up energy

caused from the stress of encountering new situations. To support physical play, provide

climbing pieces like steps or stairs for your child to tackle under your supervision.

Balls, beanbags and blocks are great for pushing, stacking, carrying and eventually for

initiating social interactions with peers. Repetitive and simple activities with toys and

objects help your toddler to confirm ideas of how they function. Once your child has

the time to discover objects and toys, he will be ready to use them as tools for more

complex social and cognitive activities.

P R E T E n D P l a Y , R E a l l E a R n I n G

The toddler’s ability to use a toy as a tool for imaginative play is an important step for

being able to engage in pretend play, an inevitable social milestone in the young child’s

development. The ability to pretend emerges by 18 months of age and pretend play

becomes more sophisticated by 3 years. It may seem like make believe to the adult eye,

but it’s what a child uses for practicing adult roles like going to the grocery store or

taking care of a baby, and acting out familiar events and actions like eating breakfast

or getting ready for bed. It’s no coincidence that expressive language skills rapidly grow

around the same time that pretend play begins to emerge—social and cognitive abilities

do not develop independently; they are intertwined. The

use of language supports and enhances imaginary play

and vice versa. When a child pretends, she uses words

to express feelings and ideas. as pretend play becomes

more sophisticated, so do language skills. When your child

begins to pretend, engage him in conversation. If he has

a ball and says, “it’s an apple,” ask him where he got it:

From the store? an apple tree? Bring up relevant words

Moms in the Know®20

The Power of Play

and ideas to enhance the play: let’s make an apple pie? What do we need to make pie

dough? Expand on his words and see where he goes with it. It’s important to support

pretend play because it encourages your child to use cognitive skills like problem solving

(what do we need to make an apple pie), and perspective taking (how does a baker

make a pie). The ability to pretend develops on its own without your intervention. You

can help take your child’s pretending to the next level.

M a K E I T a P l a Y D a T E

Peers become more interesting to young children, especially throughout the preschool

years and beyond. a prominent researcher of social development, Kenneth h. Rubin et

al., recently demonstrated that infants imitate simple toy actions of their peers as early

as 12 months. Not only does this finding suggest that children as young as 1 year are

trying to make sense of what their peers do, it supports the importance of the role peers

play in a child’s development. Scheduling play dates with other parents and children is

an effective and fun way to provide your child with unstructured time to explore and

play at her own pace and with peers. Participating in organized playgroups or parent-

child participation programs is a great way for children to interact alongside each other

with your supervision. Playgroups also provide you a place to share concerns, parenting

tips, and adult conversation with other parents. The play between your young child and

his peers will most likely take the form of parallel play, play that is near peers but not

collaborative. By 2 to 3 years, your child’s play will become more cooperative. You can

guide your child through the change from parallel to cooperative play by surrounding him

with developmentally appropriate activities he can enjoy with peers. Remember not to

expect too much from your young toddler in regards to turn taking or sharing. Make sure

there are plenty of toys to go around in your playgroup and put away any special items

you know your child will have a difficult time seeing others play with. By age 2, you will

get more cooperation from your child when it comes to sharing. Eventually your child

will form her own way of interacting with peers that satisfies you and works for her.

Play is a powerful thing for both you and your child. It emerges on its own but your

involvement and guidance play an important role in your child’s social and cognitive

development.

Things Your Children need to Know

The other day my husband was giving my son the back-to-school pep

talk: “I go to work every day and do my job. Your job is school. We

all need to do our best at the work we do.” It made me think

about my work as a mother, and I came up with a one sentence job

description: “My job is to take care of you, and to teach you how

to take care of yourself.” My two children head off to school every day where the

curriculum is already in place. What else do they need to know that only we, as their

parents, can teach them?

T E a C h T h E M TO Ta K E C a R E O F T h E M S E lv E S

Some things seem obvious to me and come easily-- the things that fall under the “taking

care of” part. along with providing clean clothes and nourishing foods, I need to

teach them that they are loved, to use their imaginations, and to be wary of strangers

unless they are introduced by a grown up they know. I try to avoid letting them harm

themselves, I strap the smaller one in a car seat, and slather them both with sunscreen.

But the second part of the job description, to teach them to take care of themselves,

means shifting the burden of being responsible onto their little shoulders. Right now

checklists are the key for my family. Rather than shouting out the same commands every

single day of life: “Brush your teeth! Make yourself a water bottle! Put on your shoes!”,

we have adopted a checklist system--”This is a list of what you have to do before you go

to school/bed/practice. Do everything on it. Then get back to me.” My preschool age

daughter’s list has pictures to illustrate what she needs to do.

Things Your Children need to Know

What else? Once they step out of my car, they are on their own, interacting with other

people, and we need to give them practice in how to do that well. My job is to teach

them to be polite to other people. For a great, brief run-down on manners:

see Parents.com, “25 Manners Every Kid Should Know by age 9.” I love this list, which

includes things like #6, “The world is not interested in what you dislike. Keep negative

opinions to yourself, or between you and your friends.”

T E a C h T h E M TO B E K I n D

not only do they need to be polite, children need to be kind to other people. For help

with this, I found a good site called www.zenhabits.net. The author, leo Babauta,

discusses teaching your child things like compassion, something that really seems to

require practice and training. help your child imagine what someone else is going

through-- and even better, imagine a way to help that person feel better. how can

you teach a child to make a friend? One part is to teach her how to listen and how to

have a conversation. In school, children aren’t taught the art of conversation, and it

takes patience to really converse with a child, but their skills can only get better with

practice.

T E a C h T h E M h O W TO M a n a G E M O n E Y

Children need to be taught to handle money, and I found a good article to help with that

at http://life.familyeducation.com. Start out with an allowance, and urge children

to save as well as spend. Open a bank account for them, and explain how credit cards

work. This article suggests having them keep a record of what they spent their money on

to see how their purchases are working out for them.

T E a C h T h E M TO S E T G O a l S a n D M a n a G E T I M E

I want to teach my children how to set goals and manage time, because these are

things I have always struggled to do. If you can teach your children to use a calendar or

planner, and how to keep their paperwork organized, you have given them a gift that

Page 34: Moms in the Know : October 2011 - January 2012

will help them with the rest of their lives. Check out Julie Morgenstern’s book on this

hugely important: We have to talk to our children about how their bodies work--

especially crucial for children approaching adolescence. If you (or your child) find it

embarrassing, bring in an objective outsider, like a book you are comfortable with (The

Care and Keeping of You, published by american Girl, and The Boys’ Body Book:

Everything You Need to Know for Growing Up YOU), or a good program like Girlology.

T E a C h T h E M T h I n G S Y O u W I S h S O M E O n E Ta u G h T Y O u

I also find myself mulling over my own outside-of-school education.

here are some things I wish I had been taught earlier: Doing a

little bit everyday adds up. What a mind blower this was for me--

and I didn’t learn it until graduate school when I was writing my

thesis. and--it is amazing how good you feel when you exercise and

eat right. also--procrastination is the worse thing ever, followed closely by avoidance.

I would also like to have had it pounded in my head to pay attention in geography and

history--that way I would have a bit more of a clue when following the news as an adult.

That takes me to things I wish someone would teach me now: how to talk to people

when feeling shy and if there is something you really want to do, don’t avoid it just

because it seems scary. Finally, there are some things I’m glad I know: that reading a

book and talking a walk are free, can be done any where, and almost always make me

feel better. I’ll try to put them all on the syllabus for my children.
