MARRIAGE MOMENTS: “Then the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary.’” (Luke 1:30) Sometimes it can be frightening to embark upon a big change in life - a birth, a death, changing a job, retirement...Call to mind a fear - past or present. Trust that sharing it with your beloved will be safe.

PARENTING POINTERS: Dec. 13 is the Feast of St. Lucia (Lucy), a virgin who brought gifts to the poor around the winter solstice. Her name means light. You may already be lighting Advent candles as you approach Christmas. As you light two candles today, tell your children the story of St. Lucia.

Good News!DECEMBER 8, 2013SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT (A)Is 11:1-10 / Rom 15:4-9 / Mt 3:1-12

About this time of year, nearly everyone is preparing to visit or be visited as families gather for traditional Christmas preparations, concerts, and meals. At our house, we also make way for those who have no one to visit—whether because of distance or circumstance. I wonder, though, whether we’d welcome a stranger or someone who challenged the way we live or think about things. Paul tells everyone to welcome one another and to glorify God with one voice.

That’s easier when everyone thinks alike. Not all of us want to reflect on the possibility that we may be wrong.

This is the issue facing the religious leaders when John the Baptist bursts onto the scene, calling on everyone to repent and prepare for the kingdom of God. John recognizes that they came to him for show—not because they sought repentance for sin. He wastes no time demanding evidence of the “good fruit” repentance brings and warning about the consequences if it’s not forthcoming.

John is a challenging guest for us as well. Sometimes we want to dictate the outcome of our discussion and our lives, but John demands that we show the fruit of our efforts. It’s not enough to go through the motions of living faithfully—we must give our very selves over to the will of God and the conversion of our lives.

Only then can we welcome everyone in love and in the praise of God.

The Fifth CommandmentYou shall not kill. Abortion Why is abortion unacceptable at any

phase in the development of an embryo?God-given human life is God’s own property; it is sacred from the first

moment of its existence and not under the control of any human being. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you” (Jer 1:5).

God alone is Lord over life and death. Not even “my” life belongs to me. Every child, from the moment of conception on, has a right to life. From his earliest beginnings an unborn human being is a separate person, and no one can infringe upon his rights, not the State, not the doctor, and not even the mother. The Church’s clarity about this is not a lack of compassion; she means, rather, to point out the irreparable harm that is inflicted on the child who is killed in abortion and on his parents and on society as a whole. Protecting innocent human life is one of the noblest tasks of the State. If a State evades this responsibility, it undermines the foundations of a rule of law.Can a handicapped child be aborted?

No. Aborting a handicapped child is always a serious crime, even if it is done with the intention of sparing that person suffering later on. (YOUCAT questions 383-384)

dear PadreWhat is a Jesse tree?

My sister has a Jesse tree in her home every year. Is that OK, or are they supposed to be in churches only?

A Jesse tree is a great way to celebrate Advent. The tree takes its name from Jesus’ ancestor Jesse, who is mentioned in Jesus’ genealogy in the first chapter of Matthew’s Gospel.

Jesse was King David’s father. Long after King David’s royal house had started to fall into trouble, the prophet Isaiah proclaimed that “a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom” (11:1) and that “on that day, the root of Jesse, set up as a signal for the peoples—Him the nations will seek out; his dwelling shall be glorious” (11:10). Christians have long understood these verses as applying to Jesus, our long-promised Messiah, the Lord whose coming would be the fulfillment of all Old Testament prophesy. Jesse trees can take all sorts of shapes and sizes, and they can be real trees, drawings, or banners. But no matter what, they are means for recalling the story of salvation and the promises of God fulfilled in Christ’s coming. Jesse trees can be set up at home or in a church. Typically a family or a parish community decorates their Jesse tree daily or weekly throughout Advent with lines from sacred Scripture or symbols of verses and stories that tell the tale of Jesus’ ancestors and of God’s preparation of his people for the coming of Christ.

Fr. Matthew Allman, [email protected]

Christmas unity Christmas is a wonderful time to forgive anyone who hurt or disappointed us. After all, Jesus came to repair our broken relationship with God. He will give us the strength and power to forgive others if we ask.

Hope always “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” (Romans 15:13).

Why do we celebrate the Immaculate Conception? In December, we commemorate that Mary was conceived in St. Anne’s womb without Original Sin. (Normally a Holy Day of Obligation, this year the solemnity is on Dec. 9th and Mass attendance is not obligatory.) In 1854, Pope Pius IX pronounced that by a special act of divine grace, the Blessed Mother was conceived, through the union of her natural father and mother, without the stain of Original Sin, which has afflicted all other humans except for her divine Son.

Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23, God chooses each of us in a special way.

Mary and Joseph were forced to travel in the last stages of her pregnancy from Nazareth to Bethlehem. On foot or donkey, it was a dirty and exhausting journey. Once there, they had no option for decent housing and had to stay in a stable with animals. Young Mary gave birth in crude conditions with no friend or family to help. After a short time, they fled to Egypt with their newborn to escape threats from the government, and stayed there for several years. There were no friendly faces to greet the family once they arrived and they had to make their own way in an unfamiliar land.Refugees all over the world flee violence like the Holy Family. Catholics have a special charge to protect them and those who are vulnerable: children, elderly, and poor. Like Mary’s and Joseph’s, God has a special place for each of us in his plan of salvation. Prayerfully ask God what he wants you to do for him and his kingdom.
