British East India Company Sepoy RebellionImperialism in India Notes

• British trading company who took advantage of instability in India & gained control of the government.

• It became the base for British Imperialism in India.

• The sepoys (Hindu & Muslim soldiers) were forced to use pig & cow grease on their weapons. This went against their religious teachings.

• Showed a lack of respect by the British towards Indian culture & religion.

• 1857: Sepoys revolt against the British in India.

• Turmoil – extreme confusion, chaos, great disorder.

• Viceroy – governor of a colony who rules for the mother country.
