Meridian Community College Monday Morning

There are those who are undoubtedly under the impression that a community college’s mission is restricted to preparing students to matriculate to universities. Meridian Community College President Dr. Scott Elliott says MCC’s aspirations for its students are a lot broader than that. “We are in the business of developing the future leaders of our com-munity and our state,” Elliott said. “That starts in the classroom, but it doesn’t end there. Leadership involves more than the acquisition of new knowledge. It’s also about developing a culture of community service, and I believe my col-leagues at MCC have done an exemplary job of instilling that value among our students.” To that end, MCC’s students logged about 5,500 hours of community service in the fall semester alone. Their efforts have continued throughout the school year with virtually every campus organization – from athletic teams to student clubs and honor societies – engaged in myriad volunteerism activities. The MCC Honors College, some 70 students strong, contributed over 700 hours in the fall term, according to Barbara Jones, co-director of the organi-zation along with Cathy Parker and Deanna Smith. Among others making major contributions have been nearly all 11 Eagle athletic teams, led by the base-ball team’s 900-plus hours of service; nursing and health education students, MCC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter, and the Baptist Student Union. Some of the venues and agencies MCC students have lent a hand to include area K-12 schools, churches, Boy Scouts of America, American Red Cross, Camp Eagle Ridge in Collinsville, Sammie Davidson Park, Phil Hardin Park, Northeast Park, Habitat for Humanity, Hope Village, local nursing homes, the Temple Theater and South Harbor Shelter. Students have done everything from cleaning up debris after hazardous weather events, reading to elementary school children, construction work, and setting up for events like the Street Strut for Cancer. Very often those activities involve volunteering time on weekends, such as bell-ringing at Christmastime for the Salvation Army. During the fall semester, MCC holds an annual “My College Cares” day in which faculty, staff and students engage in volunteerism throughout Lauderdale County. This year, some 1,774 people participated. “In the Honors College,” Jones said, “our students write essays, citing the benefits of their community service efforts. It’s very uplifting to read their comments.”

Here are some examples: “Community service is a vital part of society and something everyone should put into practice in their dai-ly lives.” “Through our vari-ous community service ac-tivities, we have been able to learn more about the his-tory of our community.” “I have learned that helping others improves the quality of life for both the people being served and the person doing the serv-ing.” “Community service helps to build and strength-en the people inside our community. I plan on continuing community service for the rest of my life.” “No matter how busy I get, there is always time to help someone else in need.” In regard to community service, Elliott said he often reflects upon a ser-mon he once heard by evangelist Joyce Meyer. “She opined that an individual can only achieve true happiness through service to others,” Elliott recalled. “In other words, it can’t always be about you. The Bible teaches us that you build treasures in Heaven by being of service to your fellow man. Quite honestly, I think that’s the most gratifying aspect of work-ing in public education – period. I’ve never known anyone who became a multi-millionaire as a classroom teacher. But I have encountered countless people who have made a huge difference in the lives of others, and those kinds of all-stars are role models not only in the classroom but also through community service. That’s what we’re trying to accomplish at MCC, and I am very proud of the ongoing efforts of our faculty, staff and students. I think it’s a point of pride not only for the college, but for our entire community.”

Two Meridian Community College students, Adam Mowdy and Emma Moffett, won first and second place awards for their presentation papers, respectively, at the Mississippi Honors Conference themed, “Celebrating 200 Years of Progress in Mississippi” held at Pearl River Community Col-lege in Poplarville.

Both are members of The Phil Hardin Foundation Honors College at Me-ridian Community College. Mowdy’s topic was The Evolution of Missis-sippi’s Health and Wellness; Moffett’s topic was What It Means to Be a Mississippian: As Shown Through the Works of Mississippi Authors.

“When I first signed up for the conference I had no idea what to expect from the other students or how competitive the other presentations would be; so I felt honored when they initially accepted my proposal for a pre-sentation,” Mowdy said. “When we first arrived, I was intimidated just from reading the titles of the other students’ presentations, but I knew at even though my presenta-tion’s title wasn’t very sophisticated, the research and information I had put into it was very solid. I knew from watching a couple of the other pre-senters that the competition was stiff which made it all the more surprising when they called my name as first place presentation winner of the 2017 Mississippi Honors Conference,” he said.

Moffett noted participating in the honors conference “not only helped me gain a better understanding of Mississippi throughout my research, but it caused me to step out of my comfort zone as both a student and a pre-senter. After this entire process, I feel more comfortable and confident to participate in future oral competitions. I was so glad to have had this opportunity to present and to have had the support of my honors college directors and classmates throughout every step of the way,” she said.

Another MCC Hon-ors College student, Justin Burkeen, was named as a delegate to the 2018 Honors Conference, which will be hosted by Jackson State University.

Barbara Jones, MCC vice president for op-erations and an MCC Honors College advis-er, said she and Cathy Parker, also an Honors College adviser, were proud of the MCC Hon-ors College students. “Our 14 students who went to the conference represented our col-lege well in many ways,” Jones said.

“We were so glad that they gave up their weekend time to participate in such a scholarly event. Not only did the students gain knowledge, but so did we as we met with other college honors directors and gleaned ideas about community events, interesting guest speakers and class projects. We are thankful for the support of the MCC Foundation, the Phil Hardin Foundation, our president Dr. Scott Elliott, and the outstanding instructors who prepare our students for a challenging educational future,” Jones added.

Another Op’nin, Another ShowArts & Letters’ Kiss Me Kate to showcase Lauderdale County students talents

Combine Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” with Cole Porter’s mu-sic and lyrics and you get “Kiss Me Kate” – an instant success with every cast and audience.

Theatergoers will get the chance to see this play-within-a-play when the Meridian Community College Arts & Letters Series presents “Kiss Me Kate” showcasing the talents of the students from Lauderdale County School District. There are two productions that will be held in the McCain Theater, a 7 p.m. performance on Saturday, Feb. 25, and a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Feb. 26.

Tickets are $10 for adults; and $5 for children and may be obtained by calling 601-484-8696.

The play centers around an egotistical leading man, Fred Graham, who is reunited with his ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi, and the two are forced to play opposite one another in a new production of Shakespeare’s “Tam-ing of the Shrew.” The battle of the sexes continues onstage and off, as it becomes clear that as much as this couple profess to hate each other, they are also still in love. But there’s more - a number of cases of mistaken identity, some gangsters and additional romantic entangle-ments. This Broadway classic earned the Tonys’ very first award for Best Musical.

Musical numbers include “Why Can’t You Behave,” “So in Love,” “Wun-derbar,” “Where Thine That Special Face,” “Brush Up on Your Shake-speare,” “I Hate Men” and “Another Op’nin, Another Show.”
