    Car Facts...

(NAPS)Safety on the road is no accident. For example, when a warning light illuminates on a cars dashboard, it is alerting you to a situation that requires your attention.

While not all warning lights are a sign that disaster is imminent, no warning indicator should ever be ignored.

Thats the word from the experts at AAA, who encourage motorists to read their owners manual and know what each of the warning lights in their vehicle means.

To help, they offer the following tips:

    Oil Pressure LightThe oil pressure

light is usually an oilcan symbol or the word OIL. It comes on when there is a drop in engine oil pressure. Of all the warning lights, the oil pressure light indicates the greatest potential for serious mechanical damage.

If the oil pressure warning light comes on and stays on, pull off the road at the earliest safe opportunity, shut off the engine and call for assistance.

Engine Temperature LightThe engine temperature light is usually a

thermometer symbol or the word TEMP. It comes on when the engine temperature is unsafe for your vehicle. Unless the engine temperature is quickly brought under control, major damage may occur.

If there are any signs of a cooling system leak, pull off the road at the earliest safe opportunity, shut off the engine and call for assistance.

Be careful when opening the hood in the presence of steam, and never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot.

Charging System LightThe charging system light is usually a

battery symbol or the word ALT or GEN. It comes on when the vehicle electrical system

is no longer being supplied power by the alternator.

If this light comes on, shut down all unnecessary electrical loads such as the radio, heater or air-conditioning, then drive the vehicle to a repair facility immediately for further inspection.Check Engine Light

The check engine light comes on when there is a problem affecting the vehicles exhaust emissions.

If the light comes on and stays on, make an appointment with an auto repair shop to have the problem checked in the near future.

However, if the check engine light begins flashing repeatedly, the catalytic converter is over-heating. Should this occur, drive the vehicle to a repair shop immediately for further diagnosis.

Disregarding a flashing check engine light could start a fire, destroy the catalytic converter and result in necessary repairs that could easily exceed $1,000.

To learn more, visit www.AAA.com or call (800) AAA-HELP. To locate an AAA Approved Auto Repair shop, visit www.AAA.com/repair.

Warning Lights Send Messages You Cant Ignore

(NAPS)Recently, a number of extreme storms and hurricanes left thousands of cars in the surrounding areas damaged by floodwaters.

Unfortunately, its common for many of these flood-damaged cars to end up back on the road every year. But by doing a little homework, you can avoid buying a car that is rotting from the inside out.

To help, here are some tips: Check the trunk, glove compartment and

below the seats for signs of water damage, such as mud or rust.

Flex the wires beneath the dashboard. Wet wires will become brittle upon drying and may crack.

Take a deep breath and smell for musty odors from mildew.

Ask to see a vehicle history report. For example, Carfax Reports can reveal many hidden problems, including if a vehicle has reported flood damage.

    To learn more, visit www.carfax.com.

    Tasteful Guides

(NAPS)People with a taste for travelincluding the armchair varietymay be glad to know about travel guides featuring such fascinating food facts as:

Small plates with big taste in Spain: Tapas are small snacks that originated from a bartenders practice of covering a glass with a saucer or tapa (cover). In Spain, its customary to move from bar to bar, sampling the specialties of each. Tapas are usually eaten standing.

Enjoy a morning feast in Ireland: Traditionally, the Irish start the day with a huge breakfast: bacon, sausages, black pudding, eggs, tomatoes and brown bread. In Northern Ireland, add potato cakes and soda farls for an Ulster Fry.

Take your time in Italy: Lunch is generally between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. and, particularly in the south, all other activity stops between these hours. Dinner is at about 7:30 p.m. and goes on until 11 p.m. or later.

Beer for breakfast in Germany: The Bavarians hearty, no-nonsense dishes are what the world considers German cuisine. Weisswurst (white sausages with a beer pretzel) are enjoyed in the morning, often with a beer, while dinner might be soup with liver dumplings, roast pork, sauerkraut and a pile of potato dumplings.

Take your pick in London: Borough Markets busy stalls of regional and continental food are a microcosm of what Londoners eat. There are English and Irish cheeses, Scottish beef, Welsh lamb, Devon cider, Suffolk oysters and more.

These tasty tips come from DK Eyewitness Travel Guides, the genuine all-in-one guides for detailed information on food, sights, history, entertainment, shopping, transportation, maps, hotels and restaurants. Known for rich illustrations, custom-drawn cutaways, floor plans and reconstructions of major buildings and museums, theyre available where books are sold.

(NAPS)Gathering together as a family for dinner can be a great idea, research shows. Just 20 minutes a night can positively affect childrens development and behavior.

Shared mealtimes can help reduce behavior problems, eating disorders and drug use in children and teens, says Dr. Barbara Fiese, professor and director of the Family Resiliency Center at the University of Illinois. But some families find it difficult to eat together on a daily basis, she adds.

To help, the Family Resiliency Center and the Pampered Chef, the largest direct seller of kitchen tools, developed the following tips to make mealtimes easier:

Try something new. Picky eaters can be a struggle at the dinner table. It can take children up to 10 times to accept a new food, but parents often get frustrated and give up after less than three times. Parents can set the example by trying new foods themselves.

Institute a no-screen rule. Turn off phones, tablets, laptops and televisions when eating together. Work and home life balance can be a challenge when there are distractions at the table.

Work together. Kids as young as 3 can help with household tasks and dinner preparations. Incorporate them into the mealtime process.

(NAPSI)-Some of the best gifts this holiday season are the ones that people take personally.Thats the word from trend watch-ers who say affordable, customized presents that include favorite photos, messages and other personal touches can be found for most anyone on your gift list. Try these suggestions:

    Make It Count

Consider making a donation to a favorite charity in your recipients name. Many groups offer certifi-cates of thanks to donors that can be customized with a friends or loved ones name.

    Wear It Well

Search the Web for sites that let you create customized T-shirts, sweatshirts or hats. Personalize the clothing with a funny saying or photo. You can even find sites that let you customize everyday items such as dishes, towels and even bed-spreads.

    Most Wonderful Time All Year

Try visiting a Web site such as www.fedex.com/gifts to design a customized wall or desktop calendar, complete with treasured photos, per-

sonal messages and more. The calen-dars can be a great--and sentimental--gift that keeps on giving to friends and family throughout the year.

    Basket Of Fun

You might give a gift basket filled with items that reflect the per-sonality or interests of the recipient. For instance, a dog lover may appre-ciate a photo book of pooches and a designer leash complete with Fidos name embroidered down the side.

    Fun Memories

Scrapbooks can be an inexpen-sive and simple way to show some-one you care. Fill a scrapbook with memories of times past but also sym-bols of future fun, such as pictures of palm trees to symbolize a vacation, or photos of bridal gowns if theres a wedding in the future.

Beautifully illustrated guidebooks make great gifts as well as trip-planning resources.

(NAPS)-An award-winning docu-mentary, Being Elmo: A Puppe-teers Journey tells the story of Kevin Clash, the creator of Elmo, who dreamed of one day working with his idol, master puppeteer Jim Henson. The documentary is avail-able to watch instantly on Netflix. For more information, visit www.netflix.com.

Digital storage devices, such as hard

drives from Western Digital (WD), can protect all your precious digital assets. For more information, visit www.wdc.com.

Need to lose a few pounds? Try a Miraclesuit, made with Xtra Life Ly-cra fiber and Miratex, a fabric that delivers three times the control of or-dinary swimwear fabrics. For more information, visit www.miraclesuit.com.

Shipping Baked Goods (NAPSI)-Knowing how to proper-ly pack and ship baked and perishable goods will help keep all your favorite holiday treats fresh and delicious. Here are a few tips from the pack and ship experts at FedEx to help: Place baked goods in a sturdy con-tainer and layer wax paper between the baked goods using crumpled paper to fill in any void spaces. Secure the lid of the container to the body with tape to keep it from acciden-tally popping off. Place the container in a sturdy corrugated cardboard box and use newspaper or plastic grocery bags to cush-ion the container tight-ly in place.

Shake the box-if you can feel or hear any movement, add more cush-ioning. Freeze perishable foods complete-ly and keep in a sealed, durable plastic container. Add dry ice to keep the food frozen during shipping. Ship the pack-age overnight, priority or standard. If possible, let the recipients know when it will arrive. When shipping, Ground or Home

(NAPSA)There is good newsfor caregivers. Resources are avail-able that are designed to help themmanage the stress that can oftenaccompany their role. In the UnitedStates, more than 65 million care-givers spend an average of 20 hourseach week providing care for peoplewho cant fully care for themselves. While this compassionate act isemotionally rewarding, it can takea toll on caregivers, leading tostress and potential burnout.

    A self-assessmentfor caregivers

Here are a few questions to askyourself about your caregiverexperience. As a caregiver, do you:

Worry that your overallhealth is spiraling downward?

Believe that the only choiceyou have is to provide care forsomeone?

Neglect your own personal orphysical concerns?

Experience exhaustion ordepression much of the time?

Notice that your eating habitshave changedeating more orless than normal?

Make adjustments to yourwork schedule or take significantamounts of time off from work tobe a caregiver?

Feel like the relationship withthe person youre caring for isstrainedwhere you are increas-ingly impatient and frustrated?

Worry about the financialcommitment of your caregiving?

Feel overwhelmed with yoursituation, but are not sure how tomake it better?

    Providing caregiverswith care

Carole Crook of Georgiaanswered yes to many of thesequestions during the nine yearsshe cared for her husband James, who was diagnosed with Alz-heimers disease. She decided shewanted to keep him home for therest of his lifetime, but as hishealth deteriorated, she reached apoint where she didnt know where

to turn. Thats when she lookedinto a program called Solutionsfor Caregivers, provided throughJames former employer.

Solutions for Caregivers isdesigned to provide the supportthat caregivers need. Through theprogram, nurses assess a familyssituation and needs, develop acare plan and discuss recommen-dations with the whole family.

The program connected Carolewith a care manager namedAudrey, who sent a nurse to theirhome to conduct an assessment.

She checked out James andhis blood pressure. She wrotedown all my questions and did athorough job with it, Carole said.It took maybe two weeks to getthe results back. After that, every-thing fell right on into place.

Audrey worked with Caroleand James for five months, pro-viding support prior to Jamespassing away. Her imprint re-mains with Carole to this day.

Ms. Audrey, she was doing herjob, but she just seemed like, Iknow you and I will take care ofyou. She did above and beyond. Iam so glad my path crossed withher path, Carole said. She becamelike a personal friend. She was sounderstanding and so nice. I justcant give her enough praise andshe did everything so thoroughly.

(NAPS)A rare flower can help bring the bloom of youth to aging skin, researchers say.

The Haberlea Rhodopensis is whats known as a resurrection flower: It has the unique ability to survive in a state of dehydration for over two years, jolting back to life within hours of proper hydration.

Now, that flower is part of new Rosa Arctica Lightweight Cream and Rosa Arctica Eye by Kiehls Since 1851. Both were created by the venerable New Yorkbased skin and hair care purveyors own chemists, after the successful introduction of last years Rosa Arctica Youth Regenerating Cream, for those who wanted a lighter weight moisturizer and an eye treatment with the originals rejuvenating benefits.

Because the energy level of skin cells lowers with age, cell turnover slows, leading to loss of moisture. Thats where these reviving products come in. Skin gets a unique, revitalizing shot of moisture, and both formulas offer improvement in the appearance of firmness, lines and wrinkles plus deep hydration,

for a rejuvenated look, and both immediate and long-term benefits. Tests showed most women saw revitalized skin in two weeks.

eye allergies, the most effective way to minimize and relieve symptoms may be a three-step approach. Those steps include:

    removing allergens from your eyelids,

lubricating your eyes, and relieving the symptoms.Itchy, irritated eyes are one

of the most annoying symptoms of allergies to pollen, ragweed, grass, animal hair and dander. While the main symptom is itching, others may include tearing, burning, mucus discharge and swollen eyelids.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce exposure to eye allergens, including wearing sunglasses or hats and making sure to shower and wash your hair before sleeping to remove allergens from the body and eye area.

Now there is a way to take a systematic approach to relieving allergy symptoms. The TheraTears Allergy Eye

Itch Relief System in cludes three products (SteriLid Eyelid Cleanser, TheraTears Allergy Eye Itch Relief, and TheraTears Lubricant Eye Drops) that can be used together to maximize symptom relief.

Washing your eyelids and the area around your eye with a quality cleanser, such as SteriLid Eyelid Cleanser, during allergy season helps remove any additional allergens that may have accumulated around your eye during the course of the day. This is particularly important for contact lens wearers, who should remember to use the cleanser prior to inserting their contact lenses.

TheraTears Allergy Eye Itch Relief with ketotifen is an antihistamine drop designed to provide relief from itchy allergy eyes in minutes.

Just like your own natural tears, lubricant eye drops can help flush out any allergens

from your eyes and also provide relief from dry eye symptoms. TheraTears balanced formula matches the human tear film, which may improve eye comfort.

You can use any of the products alone or together in a treatment system. Symptoms vary, and if they persist, check with your optometrist or ophthalmologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

(NAPS)Smartphones make us smarter but how smart are we about the smartphone selection process? More and more peoplefrom soccer moms to hardcore gamersknow they want a smartphone but dont know how to find the right one.

The good news is that doing your homework before you buy can help you find the smartphone that best meets your needs. Here is the three-step process to help you make the right mobile device purchase.

    1. Find the One That FitsStart with the obvious. You

should like the size of the mobile device and how it feels in your hand. Chances are, no matter its features, if you are not physically comfortable using the mobile device, you wont be happy.

    2. Find Your User ProfileBefore you walk into the store,

take a deep breath and identify your profile based on how you will be using the phone and the features you really want and need. Following are a few profiles to get you startedfeel free to mix and match:

No Frills, Please: You want a phone that lets you talk, text and check your e-mail. Apps, bells and whistles will only confuse things and clutter your phone.

Smart and Social: You like to be connected and want a phone that will help you take social networking to the next level. You also like sharing and comparing the latest eye-popping tricks and features on your smartphone with your friends.

Gaming Guru: You want a phone that lets you get your game onand that means one with the capacity for rich graphics and streaming video.

Multitasking Maven: You go through life 100 miles per hour and you need a smartphone that can keep up with you. From easy-to-read touch screens to GPS apps, you are looking for a partner to help you multitask on the run without having to recharge.

The good news is that whatever your profile, chances are you can find a phone that matches it.

    3. Look for a Smartphone with a Strong Heart!

Processors are the heart of a mobile device and literally bring it to life. Not all processors are created equal. Just like our human hearts,

you want a processor that allows you to go farther, last longer and do everything you want to do. So the key is finding the mobile device with a processor that will provide longer battery life, an enriched mobile experience and ultimate connectivity.

Our research has shown consumers are more reliant on mobile technology than ever and are taking the time to make informed decisions about their mobile device selection, said Tim McDonough, Vice President of Product Marketing at Qualcomm. To purchase the mobile products that best meet their lifestyle needs, we believe that more and more smartphone and tablet users are considering the processor brand when making a mobile purchase.

Qualcomms Snapdragon processors are powering the extraordinary experiences that consumers have come to expect from superior mobile devices. They help devices do more without having to constantly recharge the battery, providing seamless, high-speed Web browsing, e-mail connectivity, GPS, multimedia, best-in-class gaming, social networking and 4G LTE connectivity.

It is believed that the mobile community is aware of the Snapdragon point of difference. In order to enhance the overall mobile experience, leading manufacturers and operators have selected Snapdragon processors to power more than 420 of the most popular smartphones and tablets. Plus, its estimated there are 400 additional Snapdragon-powered devices currently in development.

(NAPS)If you want a traditional, perfectly carved, Thanksgiving turkey but would like to bring a delicious twist to the meal, then look to chef, cookbook author and James Beardaward nominee Kathy Gunst. She has discovered a way to bring the tradition of the Thanksgiving turkey to the holiday table in an unconventional way.

Every Thanksgiving, Kathy Gunst roasts a turkey in the oven, but one year she had a larger crowd than usual and needed to cook two turkeys. So, on a colder-than-normal November day, I decided to grill-roast a second turkey, says Gunst. The recipe, it turns out, couldnt be simpler. Grilling the bird resulted in a picture-perfect glazed turkey with juicy meat and a subtle smokey flavor. This recipe is nothing short of a revelation. You will not believe how a plain old turkey, simply seasoned with salt and pepper, placed on a hot grill, can have this much flavor with so little fuss, says Gunst.

Grilled Turkey 1 1012 pound turkey

Cleaned and dried. Salt and freshly ground black pepper, seasoned to taste.

Heat a fire in the grill (charcoal or gas) and cook a small (10 to 12 pound) whole turkey over indirect heat with a minimum of seasoning. Be sure to place a shallow pan underneath the bird atop the charcoal or burner covers to catch the drippings and reduce flare-ups. Grill for approximately 2 hours (use thermometer to check for doneness).

Stuff the bird and/or add an array of vegetables to the grill, like stuffed squash, corn on the cob, or turnips and potatoes for a complete meal. Add your vegetables to the grill 30 minutes or so before the turkey is done. Once the meat is cooked and cooled the bird is ready for

carving. I cant overestimate how important it is to have a good, sharp knife for carving the bird. It should be very tender and carve easily, but a well-sharpened favorite carving knife will make things that much easier, says Gunst.

ChefsChoice Turkey Carving Tips: Three Easy

StepsIf you want the turkey you

serve gobbled up this holiday, avoid hacking the bird by trying these simple carving tips from ChefsChoice:

Step 1 Be sure to use a good, sharp

knife. Sharp knives are not only safer, they will help you to smoothly cut thin, even slices without shredding the meat. Fortunately, you dont have to be an expert to put a razor sharp edge on your knife. ChefsChoice M130 sharpener professionally sharpens steels and strops all brands and types of knives. Precision guides eliminate guesswork for sharp, durable edges. For help finding a sharpener thats right for you, call (800) 342-3255 or visit www.chefschoice.com.

Step 2After the turkey is cooked

(meat thermometer should read 180 F when inserted in the thickest part of the turkey thigh) cool the bird for 15 minutes. Cooling makes the meat firmer and easier to slice. Remove and set aside the turkey legs and the last joint of each wing. Make a long, deep (to the bone) horizontal base cut into the breast just above the wing.

    Step 3Slice down vertically through

the breast until you meet the original base cut. This will release perfect, even slices.

Following these preparation and carving tips can help make your Thanksgiving a meal to remember.

(NAPS)When thoughts turn to baking and the holiday season, classic banana bread can get a scrumptious new look and nutrition power boost with the addition of sweet, fiber-rich figs and yummy chocolate morsels.

Looking for an after-school snack for the kids, a morning treat to enjoy with coffee or the perfect holiday hostess gift? Chocolate Fig Banana Bread delivers on all counts. Freeze loaves whole or cut into slices and wrap individually in plastic wrap to grab out of the freezer for everyday use.

Although its likely to be rare, if there are leftovers, Chocolate Fig Banana Bread can be used to transform bread pudding, French toast and layered ice cream parfaits into decadent holiday dishes to delight friends and family.

Use dark purple Mission Figs or Golden Figs; both work equally well in the recipe and add the same power boost of sweet fruit flavor, fiber and potassium. Keep California Dried Figs on hand for a quick energy-rich snack and sweet addition to salads, side dishes and cereals.

For more recipes, baking tips, figs and fig products, go to the Valley Fig Growers website, www.valleyfig.com.

Although tailgating has come a long way since then, the practice still centers on one key elementsharing food with friends before the big eventwhether thats a game, a concert or even another party.

(NAPSI)Many homeowners are looking to boost their energy efficien-cy and reduce bills by adding insula-tion. Not all insulation, however, is created equal.

    What Makes Insulation Sustainable?

A sustainable insulation not only per-forms well but is manufactured respon-sibly. It will reduce your overall carbon footprint with efficient manufacturing and shipping, such as reducing water and energy use at the plant and using special packaging to transport more product in fewer loads. It has limited environmental effect over its life span and has very low or no emissions of volatile organic compounds-an impor-tant component of a healthy home. It should also consist of renewable and recycled content, which puts materials to good use instead of being landfilled. Most importantly, insulation should contribute to a cozy, efficient home.

You can reduce your impact on the en-vironment by choosing products such as CertainTeeds Sustainable Insula-tion. This fiberglass insulation saves

12 times the energy the first year as the energy used to produce it and will continue to save energy for the lifetime of a home. With its GREENGUARD Children & Schools certification, this highly efficient insulation helps assure families of healthier indoor air quality.

(NAPS)One of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Johnny Cash, known as The Man in Black, would have been 80 years old this year.

Although a country music icon, Cashs music spanned blues, folk, rock n roll and gospel, adding to his tremendous multigenerational appeal. His humble farm-boy roots, his rebellious nature and his early, public battles with drugs and alcohol only added to Cashs celebrity.

His widespread and enduring popularity, evidenced by inductions into the Country Music Hall of Fame (1980), the Gospel Music Hall of Fame (2010) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1995), also made Cash one of the only artists to sell over 90 million records.

Signing with Sun Studios in 1954, Cash wrote and recorded songs that expressed his passion for life and compassion for others, as well as his rebelliousness and spirituality.

This is especially true of Cashs signature songs, including I Walk the Line, which shot to No. 1 on Billboards chart in 1955 and stayed on the charts for an incredible 43 weeks, selling over 2 million copies.

Soon, Cash had performed at the Grand Ole Opry and was touring up to 300 nights a year, supported by an impressive string of hit songs. He also appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show and other popular TV programs.

But success took its toll and by the early 1960s Cashs first marriage was collapsing and his grueling tour schedule had eased him into drug addiction.

Recorded in 1963, Ring of Fire, a song co-written by Cashs new love interest, June Carter, would become the biggest hit of his career, staying at No. 1 on the charts for seven weeks. Carter would play a pivotal role in helping Cash to overcome his addictions.

In 1967, Cash and Carter ironically recorded Jackson, a duet about a married couple whose relationship had lost its fire. The song reached No. 2 on the country

charts and, after the couple wed in 1968, they picked up a Grammy for Best Country & Western Performance, Duet, Trio or Group.

In 1970, Cashs recording of Kris Kristoffersons Sunday Morning Coming Down hit No. 1 on the country charts and earned the Country Music Association Award for Song of the Year.

Over the next 30 years, Cash would continue to have numerous hit songs, including his 1985 single, Highwayman, which he recorded as part of The Highwaymen, a group formed with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson.

In 2002, Cash recorded a cover of the Nine Inch Nails song Hurt, which won an MTV Award and a Grammy and earned Cash three more CMA awards in 2003.

Cashs extraordinary life, as well as his impact on such artists as Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Grace Potter, Shooter Jennings, Chris Isaak, John Carter Cash, Josh Thompson, Yelawolf and Justin Townes Earle, will be explored when Ovation premieres Song by Song: Johnny Cash, an original six-part series that remembers the legendary singer/songwriter through his most popular songs.
