MVC Scholarship CompetitionCAPITAL REGION – In 1992, the fi rst Mohawk Valley Cho-rus scholarship winner was selected. The annual competition is upon us once again. It is open to any high school junior or senior within the area: Albany, Fulton, Hamilton, Montgom-ery, Saratoga, Schenectady and Schoharie counties. Each ap-plicant must submit a tape or CD of two selections (one should be a classical number) and three letters of reference (at least one from a vocal music teacher) to scholarship chairman Gay O’Brien, Box 2440, Ballston Spa, NY 12020. Deadline is February 20. A panel of qualifi ed MVC judges will review the tapes and fi nalists may be asked to perform at a live au-dition. The winner, who will be awarded a $500 scholarship to be used at the student’s discretion, will be contacted by the end of February and will perform at the annual Classics concert March 11. Application forms are being mailed to school and private music teachers throughout the area this month. They may also be obtained from Mrs. O’Brien, 885-3781. Funds for the scholarship are raised through a weekly 50-50 raffl e con-ducted by the chorus and special donations earmarked for the scholarship fund. (P)

Wave Riders Support ProgramSARATOGA SPRINGS – The Community Hospice of Sara-toga offers a six-week support group for children, Grades K-8, who have experienced the death of someone signifi cant in their lives, including a parent, grandparent, sibling or friend. Delicious Desserts & Divine DivasSARATOGA SPRINGS – Local Sweet Adelines singers will combine cupcakes and close harmony to create a sweetheart of a fundraiser. Quilt Honors Gold Star Mothers and Fallen Service MembersSARATOGA SPRINGS – A quilt featuring the names of 24 Capital Region service members who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001 is on display at the New York State Military Museum now thru the summer of 2012. The quilt fea-tures white stars on a blue background embroidered with the name of the service member and next to that is a gold star with the name of the service member’s mother. In 1928 a group of mothers whose sons had been killed in the war formed the Gold Star Mothers as a support organization and as a way to remem-ber their children. Blue Star Mothers was organized in 1998 as a way for women with sons and daughters in the military to support their children and all military members. The New York State Military Museum is located in the Saratoga Springs Armory at 61 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs. Museum hours: Tues.-Sat., 10am-4pm; Sun., 12-4pm. Closed on New York State holidays.
