Monitor Market Trends 1991-1997 International Planning Information, Denmark (1991) $3250, 552 pp

In nearly every applications categ- ory, CRT-market demand is increasing for higher information content, higher resolutions, higher speed and full colour. The vendors have responded, and CRTs are cur- rently better and cheaper than ever before on a price/performance basis. Flat-panel display technolo- gies continue to trail CRTs on price/ performance, by a wide margin, and, outside the fiat-panel applica- tions niches in computer, industrial and consumer products, CRTs will be the display of choice for the bulk of information-display applications over the next seven years, accord- ing to a new report on monitor-

market trends over 1991-1997. 76% of the personal-computer

monitors sold in 1990 were colour monitors. The trend is towards higher pixel formats, and the 1024 × 768 format is replacing the 640 x 480 format. Dot-pitch trends are away from 0.31mm to 0.26- 0.28 mm.

In 1990, North America pro- duced 6.9% of monitors, Europe 8.5%, Japan 15.4% and Korea 26.5%.

The world market continues to offer opportunities for growth and profitability, although regional con- ditions will vary widely. The report contains forecasts by unit consump-

tion, value, price, monitor charac- teristics (e.g. size, profile type, resolution, pixel format, touch screens), application (in the trans- portation, industrial, business/ commercial/retail, computer, com- munications, and military sectors), monitor type and geographic region (USA, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Western Europe). -filed, and the report reviews the factors necessary for success in the high-end industry, and emerging technologies. (IPI, Rugvaenget 21, DK-2630 Taastrup, Denmark. (Tel: +45 43 71 20 44, Fax: +45 43 71 20 25) []
