RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NOTES

Under Rabbi Priesand's direction the Religious Sc~o.ol has und~rtaken a year-long program entitled "Mitzvah ol ·the Month." Each month the Rabbi will issue to y:Our children a one or two-page fact sheet concerning a " Jewish commandment to be kept in their own three-hole punched manilla folder. These folders wer.e already individually decor~ted by the students with instructions to discuss the first mitzvah, mezuzah, with you. This program wiH involy.e special classroom lessons by our teachers; but, the idea was conceived as a family education project, not just a classroom exercise.

The term mitzvah is often incorrectly translated 'as "a good deed. It actually means commandment; as Jews, it is our obUgation to perform certain ,.acts. Those of you not familiar with 1he Jewish vaille associated with each mitzvah, chosen by Rabbi Priesand, will be able to share a wonderful learning .experience with your children.

Tzdakah was selected as the November Mitzvah of the Month. Usually translated as charity, tzdakah correctly means righteousness. The distinction elevates the term to personal behavior and ethics. (In my own experience, only 'one per-son was ever given the , honor of being called . a "tzdakah,"· a righteous person.) Without trying to be · moralistic, th-.s·· month·'s, topic ccm- provide- . families with the · incentive to discuss truthllie, correct behaviorlinappropriate behavior, having plenty/having nothing, and giving/receiving.

This program is different in that it goes beyond the simplicity sometimes seen in our holiday activities or the abstract so obvious in many of our

. rituals. . Each piece of explanatory material will , ~ )t"~wer the "but, why?" of the month's mitzvfl,h for

each family. I believe that Rabbi Priesand ha,S hit upon a unique method to raise our Jewish conscience level.

ATTENDANCE OF SERVICES BY GRADES 4, 5 AND 6 t-KJW REQUIRED FOR PROMOTION

Since familiarity with the . Shabbat Service and experience on the bema is an inherent part of the Hebrew curriculum, students in grades 4,5 and 6 are now required to attend annually 3 Shabbat Services and participate in their class Shabbat Service on the bema." One or both parents must accompany the student at services. To receive credit, all services must be attended 'at Monmouth Reform Temple. Att~ndance at family and holiday services "does not satisfy thiS- 'requirement.

Two services must be attended during the fall term, the remaining service may be attended during any part of the school year.

FROM RABBI PRIESAND

Several weeks ago, you received from me a letter ;.describing a new project we have begun here at Temple which will enable us to reach out and help one another. Included with the letter were two questionnaires, one blue and. one pink, which you were asked ;to complete and return to me. I am delighted to report thar the response to this project has been extremely positive. As of this writing, I have heard from 'nearly 25% of our members, and more questionnair~s are coming in eve~_ day. .

Soon we will begin compiling the information found on · the blue questionnaires in order to publish our Human Resources Directory, the purpose of which will be to provide members of our Temple f.amily with information about what other congregants do for a living or regard as a skill. We hope to include the following categories: '. - Art, Business, Computers, Counselling, Education, Engineering, Finance, Law, Management, Medicine, Retail and Sales, . Telecommunications, and Travel. If you would like to be listed in our Directory and have not yet returned the blue questionnaire, please do so as . soon as possible. _ A copy of the questionnaire can be obtained by calling the Temple office.

As I explained in my initial letter to you, the information found on the pink questionnaire will remain confidential. Indeed, these questionnaires are being kept at my home rather than in my office. When I feel that you may be able to help a fellow member who is suddenly confronted with crisi~, . 1 !pill call and ask for your assistance. In addition, I hope that if you are in need of advice or cou;nsel, you will not hesitate to call me.

Thanks so much for your support . With your help, we can make ou~ Temple a true caring community.

BAR/BAT MITZVAH FAMILIES

If you have any questions, please call Gene .. Gilbert 530-9499 or the Temple office 747-. 9365. We'll try to help.

> FROM THE PRESIDENT

Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away, , and I hope you are planning to attend the ~ __ Interfaith Service that we share each year with the

Presbyterian Church at Shrewsbury. This year we .. host the ~nnual seryice which is followed by

.conversatIon an~ .... 'coffee ·on Wednesday, November 27 at 8 PM. ~ .

For newer members let me explain that this fellowship between Monmouth Reform Temple and the Presbyterian Church at Shrewsbury dates back to the founding of Temple. When Monmouth Reform Temple began, the

.' ~ongregation had no buildi~g and the church graciously gave us space in 'which to conduct services. Their gift has forged a lasting bond

. between our two congregations. Our Interfaith Service sets the mood for

the holiday when we give thanks for the bounty we enjoy and the good we share. I hope you will be there.

FROM MOREY & JEAN BERGER

Jean and 1 send many thanks to you and Monmouth Reform Temple for your kind card of good wishes. This is the first time in all of our moves that a Congregation has noted our departure.

. We are busy settling down in a new environment. Tuscon, Arizona is a big city; the climate is hot, dry and arid, and 'he traffic is even heavier than Monmouth County.

Though we expect to join a local congregation, we miss the cordiality of Monmouth Reform, as well as the meaningful services. .

With . -all good :wishes . . to the Rabbi and the Congregation. . 1

REFLECTICWS

THE TEN COMoMNDMENTS OF HUMAN RELATIONS

1. Speak to people. There is nothing so nice as a cheerful word of greeting. 2. Smile at people. It makes 72 muscles to frown, only 14 to smile. 3. Call people by name. The sweetest music to anyone's ears is the sound of his or her own name. 4. Be friendly and helpful. If you want friends, you must be one. 5. Be cordial. Speak and act as if everything you do is a joy to you. 6. Be genuinely interested in people. You can like almost anybody if you try. 7. Be considerate with the feelings of others. There are usually three sides to a controversy: Yours, the other person's and the right side. 9. Be eager to lend a helping hand. Often it is appreciated more than you know. What counts most in life is what we do for others. 10. Add to this a good sense of humor, a huge dose of patience and a dash of humility. This combination will open many doors and the rewards will be enormous.
