It is hard to believe that we are already to the month of February!
2018 is flying by, and the Season of Lent begins on Wednesday,
February 14th:
Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which
begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes
from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The
forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring
the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry.
Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the
coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In
the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for
baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God,
often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of
themselves for others.
Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because
each Sunday represents a "mini-Easter" and the reverent spirit of
Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection.
As we prepare for the
Season of Lent I challenge
you to take on a new Lenten
discipline. Maybe it’s fasting
from a favorite food or drink.
Maybe it’s adding on a new
spiritual discipline or study.
Begin to prayerfully discern
what God might be calling
for you to do to make this
Lenten Season one of
introspection and celebration.
Blessings,
Melody

FEBRUARY’S “SPOTLIGHT MEMBERS”
The Gregorys
Henry (Bubba) Gregory and Belinda Green Gregory represent "old Barbers
Hill" at its finest! They both grew up in this community. Bubba's dad
owned L&G (restaurant)---our first and only fast food venue! The
hamburgers were legendary, and kids could charge their orders--parents
would pay later!! Belinda's dad was a long-time member of the Barbers
Hill ISD Board of Trustees.
Belinda’s brother, the Rev. David Green, is one of the three future pastors
who grew in FUMCMB! (The other two are the Rev. Robert Pace and the
Rev. Dusty Kemp (deceased.)
The Gregorys are the parents of a daughter, Alyce Jones of Mont Belvieu,
whose two sons, Peyton and Mason, are most special to their grandparents!
Son, Paul Gregory and wife Maegan, are currently living with the Gregorys,
as their home in Whispering Pines (Baytown) was destroyed by Hurricane
Harvey.
Bubba retired as a supervisor for BAYER in Baytown. The couple travels
when their health issues permit; they
especially enjoy West Texas!
Belinda describes FUMCMB as a
“small, hometown church where the
membership seems like family” to
her. We are happy to have this
“hometown couple” aboard!
