WelcomeWelcomeWelcomeWe are pleased to offer a wide assortment of educational opportunities for the youth of our communities. You will find a rich variety of activities to stimulate young minds and to provide meaningful learning experiences. Summer can be a wonderful time to explore new areas of interest and to visit the campuses of Montgomery College. We have been serving our community as a learning institution, for all ages, for more than 50 years and look forward to having you with us this year.
Keep in mind that you should make every effort to sign up as soon as you can for the programs of your choice because we accept students in the order that we receive their registration forms. Pending funding, a limited number of scholarships (one course per child) may be available this summer (scholarship eligibility is determined by qualification for Montgomery County’s free or reduced meal program). The deadline for Scholarship submission is May 27, 2011.

General INformation
Registering Your StudentUse one form for each student...• Make Course Selection(s) Ages/Grades listed with each course title indicate the age/grade of the student during the 2010–2011 school year.• Complete Registration Form One per student. Be sure to include student’s MC Identification Number. If he/she does not have an MC ID number, one will be assigned at registration. This will be the student’s permanent Identification Number at Montgomery College. You will want to keep it in a safe place.• Complete All Signature Lines Signature of school official is REQUIRED for students enrolling in courses indicated as [GT]*
*(Applications cannot be processed without applicable signatures) • Registrants Will Be Enrolled In The Order That Registration And Payments Are Received. We urge you to register as early as possible to avoid disappointment. You will receive acknowledgement of your registration. If confirmation of registration is not received at least five days prior to the start of the class, please call our Customer Service office at 240-567-5188. • All Students Must Register Prior To Attending Class; do not attend class if you have not registered in advance.• Classes Will Be Cancelled If They Are Under-Enrolled.

Please make all checks payable to Montgomery College. American Express, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover are also accepted for payment. • Fax: Summer Programs: 240-567-7548 Please indicate your credit card payment information. • Walk–in: Registration(s) must be brought to the Campus Center building, Rockville Campus, Room 220. • Web: http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/wdce/youth.html Look for registration link under the program area.

ScholarshipsPending funding, a limited number of partial scholarships may be available for Montgomery County students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Scholarship application deadline is May 27, 2011. No scholarship applications will be accepted after May 27, 2011.Submission of a scholarship application does not guarantee that scholarship funds will be granted. To apply for a scholarship, complete the registration form, and attach a copy of the free or reduced meals eligibility form or a copy of your current income tax form showing total family income. Mail these forms along with a check or credit card information for the amount of the fee. (Scholarship awards are for the amount of the TUITION ONLY for ONE COURSE PER STU-DENT.) Fees must be paid and must accompany your registration form. Residency PolicyThe following are general guidelines taken from the College policy on residency for tuition purposes. A complete copy of the policy is available in the Montgom-ery College Catalog. • Students attending Montgomery College will pay tuition according to their residency. • To qualify as a resident of the state of Maryland for tuition purposes, legal domicile must have been maintained for a period not less than three months prior to the first regularly scheduled class. • Non-Maryland residents pay Out-of-State Fees. (Non-U.S. Citizens: attach a copy of your passport visa or permanent resident card.)Cancellation PolicyCourses may be cancelled due to under enrollment at least one week prior to start of course or program. Students will be notified of cancellation by phone or e-mail and a refund will be processed for the total cost of course(s).Refund Policy • Class Withdrawal/Drop—Parents who wish to withdraw their child from a course will receive 100 percent refund if written request is received at Montgomery College at least 6 days prior to start of the course. Requests to withdraw from a class received within 5 days of the start of the class will be subject to a fee of $50.00. • NO full refunds are provided after the start of the course. Requests for refunds after the start of the program will be reviewed and, if granted, will be a prorated/partial refund based on classes attended. • Requests for refunds may be completed in person at any of the three campus Admissions and Records offices or by writing to: Montgomery College, Workforce Development & Continuing Education, Customer Service, 51 Mannakee Street, CC220, Rockville, MD 20850. Please allow 3–4 weeks for refunds to be processed.

• Class Transfer Requests—Students will be allowed to transfer from one class to another, one time without a charge. Any additional schedule changes will be reviewed and may be subject to a $20.00 fee. • For complete information see the Workforce Development & Continuing Education Schedule of Noncredit Classes.Contributions to Our Youth Scholarship Fund You may take advantage of this easy way to make a tax-deductible contribution to the College’s Youth Scholarship Fund by writing an amount on the Registration Form. Your contribution helps children who would not otherwise have access to these challenging and exciting learning opportunities.Disability Support ServicesIf you require an aid, services, or barriers removed to fully participate in Montgomery College Workforce Development & Continuing Education (WD&CE) programs, register first, then call 240-567-1819 or TTY 240-567-7931, at least three weeks before the first day of class to arrange for reasonable accommoda-tions. See the WD&CE Schedule of Noncredit Classes for a complete listing of services available for students with disabilities or telephone 240-567-5188 for additional information.TransportationStudents and their parents or guardians are responsible for all transportation arrangements. Public transportation is available. Call Montgomery County Transit Information at 301-217-RIDE. Please pick up and deliver your student at the assigned classroom; no before and after care is provided.Behavioral IssuesStudents will abide by the rules and regulations of Montgomery College including exhibiting classroom behavior that allows for a study environment free from harassment, discrimination, and disruption. Behavior contrary to this will not be tolerated and may result in expulsion.Health ServicesShould a medical emergency occur, trained personnel from the Campus Security Office will be available to render aid.Food ServicesStudents may bring a lunch or snack. Cafeteria service will be available in the Humanities building at the Germantown Campus, in the Campus Center building at the Rockville Campus, and in the Student Services Center at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. Anatomy and Physiology in DiversityThroughout time, no issue has been of more interest than learning about our origins. Where did we come from? What did our ancestors look like? Where did they live? Biology: Life in the Ocean Marine Biology is the study of marine life. Examine marine organisms from each of the major oceanic zones. Mad ScienceMad Science
Mad Science is the largest and most comprehensive provider of science enrichment and educational services within the metro area. They perform their programming throughout the MCPS system and work closely with the Montgomery County science curriculum. These hands-on science programs are themed around a particular area of science and include such topics as rocketry, magnets, polymers, and even the science of toys. During the week-long camps students will engage in exciting hands-on activities, watch spectacular demonstrations, participate in inquiry-based discussions, and take home things that they have made themselves like model rockets, periscopes, Mad Science putty, and more. Grades K–6 This action-packed week will focus solely on rockets and the physics of rocket flight. Summer Dinner Theatre is an educational experience that focuses on producing musical theatre in a dinner theatre setting. In this intensive 11-week course, we present two major musicals, giving 15 public performances and serving more than 5,000 meals. We look for students who are talented, willing to work hard and have some theatrical experience. Although Summer Dinner Theatre is a college-level course, we encourage talented high school students and interested community members to audition as a performer or interview as a technician for the course. Scholarships are available. Course: YOU289Do you love to use your imagination? Do you have a special flair for the written word?
Writing is an integral part of all subject areas including math and science! This Institute recognizes and encourages aspiring writers by giving them instruction in the writing process and immersing them in the writing process used by professional writers. A variety of activities will include directed instruction, free writing time, and the application of technology. The Institute fosters students’ creativity and enjoyment of writing. Students will explore various forms of story structure, paragraph organization, figurative language, poetry, and idea development including the use of a personal writer’s notebook. All Institute participants will contribute original pieces to produce a final class publication. The average student/instructor ratio in this class is 10:1 which provides in-depth teacher support and encouragement. Each group will be taught by two National Board Certified Teachers who are acknowledged as outstanding teachers of writing. Instructors: Natalie Barna and Monica Ross

Young Artist ProgramPaint a picture of a winter scene while learning about Andrew Wyeth and his realistic, detailed and naturalistic paintings. Explore wet and dry techniques while creating your own masterpiece. Learn about the colors and styles of Van Gogh, then paint using his long and/or short brush strokes or a palette knife to make thick strokes for an impasto painting. Create vibrant, powerful images us-ing complementary colors side by side. Discover the work of Romare Bearden by creating your own photomontage. Follow the footsteps of Georgia O’Keeffe and design a flower painting that goes off the canvas. Acrylic and tempera paint will be use along with other materials.
