Montgomery County Parks and Recreation 2012 Winter/Spring brochure

R egistration for winter programs will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tues., Jan. 17. Mail-in registrations will be processed in the order received. Visa and MasterCard payments are accepted. If the minimum

number of participants is not met, the class may not meet and those who are registered will be notified if the class or activity is cancelled. Upon registration you will receive a confirmation of starting dates and times as printed in the schedule.

Refunds are available if requested before the start of the program or activity. Through the mid-point of a program or activity, pro-rated refunds will be considered on a merit basis. Refunds are automatic when programs or activities are cancelled or schedule changes prohibit attendance. In the event that the participant cannot attend the program or activity, he/she must provide notice at least seven (7) days prior to the start of the program or activity or prior to the registration deadline, in order to receive a full refund. In the event of inclement weather, if Montgomery County schools are closed, then athletic programs are cancelled.

RED CROSS BABYSITTINGAre you looking for a great after-school job? Choose babysitting! You can pick your own hours and have fun; all you need is a little training to get started. Join our American Red Cross Certified Instructor as she teaches you all the essentials to being a safe babysitter. Ages 12 and up. $45, includes all materials and teaching supplies.

AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARDINGThis American Red Cross Certified Course will provide you with the necessary skills to become a Certified Lifeguard. The course will include American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, AED and Lifeguarding Training. Persons interested in the class should be strong swimmers and come prepared to be challenged with these new skills. After the completion of the course you will receive a certification card for all the skills listed above. If you are selected for an interview and hired, you will receive a $75 refund at the end of the pool season. 2012 KATHY NEFF RACE for the STARS MEMORIAL RUN and FUN RUNWe welcome all participants to the 2012 Kathy Neff Race for the Stars Memorial Run and Fun Run! This race will take place on Sat., May 12, at Auburn Elementary School in Riner. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. The entry fee for the 5K is $20 if pre-registered by May 12 and $25 on race day. The entry fee for the 1 Mile Fun Run is $7 if pre-registered by May 12 and $10 on race day. HORSEBACK RIDING - Beginner walk/trotThis course is for beginner riders and has an emphasis on safety, grooming, tacking up and caring for mount post-workout. This course includes flat work at the walk and trot, ground poles, games and trail riding to develop a basic, balanced position. Four sessions to be held over 6 dates; classes will be cancelled if wind chill is below 40 degrees and/or rain is likely. Additional sessions will be scheduled if weather is not cooperative. Due to the size of available mounts, we can accommodate one rider per session in the 175-200 lb. range and an additional two in the 150-175 lb. range. Minimum of 2 participants; maximum of 4. Classes will be held at 2815 Wild Turkey Run in Christiansburg. $105 per session

DUTCH OVEN COOKING WORKSHOPThis three-part series will showcase the history and fun associated with Dutch oven cooking. We will cover all aspects of the Dutch oven including history, seasoning and cleaning, meals and cooking techniques. The final session will involve making a part of a meal that all participants will enjoy together. Participants who wish to provide their own equipment will be charged $25; those who need a Dutch oven and utensils provided will be charged $80, you get to keep the Dutch oven and utensils after the class is over

A FAMILY THAT GARDENS TOGETHER, GROWS TOGETHERLet the pros with Virginia Cooperative Exension teach you some of the secrets to starting and harvesting a successful garden with this two-night workshop. You will learn about soil fertility, site selection, vegetable varieties and more techniques to help your family start a garden, maintain it and get the best use of its harvest. Enjoy the fruits of your labor all year long with safe food preservation. Children ages 9 to 19 are also encouraged to participate in this family project. 4-H will provide a concurrent mini-garden program and project for children. Prize money will be awarded to children with the best mini-garden projects. Another workshop will be offered in the summer to address garden problems like insects and disease; it will also include hands-on canning and food prep activities. This program will be advertised in the summer brochure. $30 per family

VIRGINIA TECHNIQUES TRAINING COURSES and CENTERVirginia Techniques is a certified Gymnastics Teaching Organization and is offering a special to those who register for monthly sessions through Montgomery County Parks and Recreation. The center is located at 1550 Roanoke St., Suite C, Christiansburg. It includes an in-ground trampoline, foam pit, multipurpose/party room and more! No family membership fee is required if signing up through Parks and Rec; however, only limited classes are available (listed in this section). Families can become members of VA Techniques Gymnastics to have their choice of all available class times. Families must complete a VTGI registration form and liability waiver.

BOUNCING BUNNIESThis class provides parents and older toddlers an introduction to general gymnastics skills with an emphasis on patterns, exploration, courage and confidence. Students will be introduced to general gym-nastics equipment and skills while working with their parents under the supervision of our trained coaches. $54

CUSTOMIZED GROUP ADVENTURE TRIPSLet us arrange an adventure for your work, church or other social group right here in your backyard! Activities include whitewater rafting, paintball and rope courses. Give us a call at 382-6975 to get started. DISC GOLF COURSEWe have an 18-hole disc golf course for you to enjoy that includes wooded fairways and a variety of elevation gains. SPRING ROCK CLIMBINGThis introductory course will teach you about safety, the use and care of equipment and climbing techniques in beautiful Bozoo, WV! Pack your lunch and spend the day. BEGINNER KAYAKING INSTRUCTION WEEKENDDay One - After we get you acquainted with your kayak and gear, we will get to work to help you feel in control of your boat. The first day will take place in calm, user-friendly water. We will practice getting in and out of the boat and focus on balance, body mechanics, strokes, turns and leans. Learning to ‘wet exit’ and practicing the ‘Eskimo rescue’ will help you find a comfort zone in your kayak even when you’re upside down! Day Two - We start putting the basics we learned on Day One to work on a scenic 8.5 mile, Class II section of the New River. We’ll review your paddling skills and introduce new ones that will allow you to maneuver your kayak more efficiently. You’ll use the river to focus on the dynamics of current, peel-outs, eddy turns, steering and balance and bracing in current. KIDS in KAYAKSThis class will introduce children to the sport of kayaking and will focus on teaching them the parts of a kayak, equipment, floating in their life jacket (or PFD), getting in and out of the kayak and practicing paddle strokes. Don’t worry - there will be lots of fun and games, too! Classes will be held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. No spray skirts will be used to help your child feel more comfortable in and around the water. Registration deadline is one week prior to class. $20

BASIC PISTOL/NRA CERTIFICATIONCo-sponsored by the Shawnee Shooting Sports Club (SSSC), the National Rifle Association (NRA) Basic Pistol Course introduces students to the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for owning and shooting a pistol safely. Through this course, students will learn about pistol parts and operation, ammunition, gun safety, pistol shooting fundamentals and pistol shooting activities. The Basic Course will also help prepare the student for other NRA courses. Students will spend six hours in the MCPAC classroom (three hours each on Friday evening and Saturday morning) and at least three hours on the SSSC’s range on Saturday afternoon. The SSSC will provide safety equipment, firearms and ammunition for the course. Students will be allowed to bring firearms to the range for practice after the course range exercise is completed. MOUNTAIN TREKKERS HIKING CLUBJoin us for some great fun, good exercise and an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. A chance to learn about the area in which we live, both legend and folklore! The hikes are easy to moderate in terrain and two to four miles in length. Register for five hikes and receive a $10 discount on your next scheduled hike! New hiking club participants must complete a Level I hike for assessment and to establish hiker level of participation.

Assessing the right hike for you can enhance your experience on the trail. See the trail rating system below:

• Level I: Leisurely stroll. Participants at this level will be exercising by walking a couple of miles, stretching their legs and getting outdoors for fresh air and sunshine! Trails will consist of flat or gradual terrain and typically a paved or groomed surface.• Level II: Moderate exercise. Explore nature off the beaten path by stepping over trail obstacles with root and rock outcroppings, climb and descend moderate uneven terrain and know your personal limitations. Walking shoes with a cleaved sole are required for this level hike.• Level III: Heart pumping exercise. Participants are in good physical condition and are capable of maneuvering rough, uneven terrain along with elevation gains. Loose surface material should be expected. High top hiking boots or a shoe with ankle support and cleaved sole are required for this level hike.

POVERTY CREEK TRAILA great way to experience the diverse nature of the Southern Appalachians! The 1.7 mile hike will allow you to explore some of the challenging loops of the Poverty Creek Trail system. Lunch on your own at Mikie’s Seventh, featuring locally-grown and organic products. AMERICAN CHESTNUT FOUNDATIONVisit the Research Farms of the American Chestnut Foundation in Meadowview. Chestnut trees have been planted, crossed and grown there; over 34,000 trees planted in various stages on 150 acres of farmland at the Wagner Research Farm. SANDSTONE FALLSAn enormously wide waterfall on the New River in Hinton, WV! The thousand- foot-wide river tumbles over a sandstone ledge creating a number of waterfalls varying in different heights and widths. Board walks take you out to the middle of the falls, but only distant views of the largest falls are available. The afternoon will be spent in downtown Hinton with lunch on your own at the Market Restaurant, featuring sandwiches, soups and entrees. Eastern Montgomery ParkMontgomery County’s newest park is tucked away in the eastern part of the County on the South Fork of the Roanoke River. East Mont Park has some unique amenities such as a grass volleyball court, model airplane flying strip and a canoe and kayak boat launch into the river. A new playground and walking trail make this a great place to spend time. The shelter is available for rental and has picnic tables, concrete floors and a grill.

The Frog PondMontgomery County’s only outdoor public pool is a beach-entry leisure pool with water slides, fountains and geysers. The tots pool beside the leisure pool provides enjoyment for children under age 5. The Frog Pond opens on Memorial Day weekend. The entire facility is available for rental.

Golden Hills Disc Golf CourseThe only 18-hole disc golf course in the region, the course boasts tight fairways with severe elevation changes throughout. Monthly meetings of the Hillbilly Huckers Disc Golf Club as well as several amateur and professional tournaments are held here.

Huckleberry TrailA collaborative effort by Montgomery County, Blacksburg and Christiansburg, Huckleberry Trail is an asphalt-paved bike/pedestrian path constructed on the old Huckleberry Rail Line. The trail currently runs from the Blacksburg Public Library to the New River Mall in Christiansburg. The total distance from the library to the mall is 5.762 miles.

McCoy ParkJust a 15-minute drive from Blacksburg, McCoy Park features a youth baseball field, a picnic shelter, walking track and new playground equipment. The shelter has picnic tables, concrete floors and electricity. Both the field and shelter are available for rental.

Mid County ParkThe largest park in Montgomery County at 110 acres, Mid County is home to the Activity Center, the Frog Pond, Golden Hills Disc Golf Course, as well as an extensive nature trail system and three shelters.

Motor Mile ParkBuilt with donations from the Shelor Motor Group, this tournament-style baseball facility has restrooms, a lighted Dixie regulation baseball/softball field and a multipurpose practice field for a variety of sports. Future plans for this park include a shelter and playground.

Plum Creek ParkLocated in the western part of the County near the City of Radford, Plum Creek Park features a competition-level baseball/softball field, soccer fields, walking track, brand new playground equipment, and a restroom facility. The field is available for rental.

Coal Mining Heritage ParkLocated in the middle of the Huckleberry Trail, in between the Towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg. The former Merrimac mining community used to reside on this 30-acre tract that once hosted a mining tipple, hotel, general store and residential housing for coal miners. Now you will find a passive park with open green space along with a large wooden bridge that takes you into the park and around the loop trail, along with brand new restroom facilities.
