    Kenny Lau Employee of the Month

    EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

    Kevin Reneau introduced Henry Chao, owner ofChef Chao restaurant in Rheem. He spokeeloquently about this months winner, Kenny Lau,who has been a valued employee for 27 years andis considered family by the team. Kenny was given$50 gift cards by both Safeway and TJ Maxx, whichCliffsays will make up for the miserly tips he has leftover the years.

    ~~ROTARY HAPPENINGS~~

    Our first TGIFITLFOTM event (Thank goodness its thelast Friday of the month) was a successful night ofellowship at Barbara Bruners residence, with aboutwelve Rotarians and spouses attending. Attendeesliked the informality of the event, unlike many of ourfunctions. The October event will be held at Kevin &Pam Reneaus on Friday Nov 1, with scheduling worthyof a Cal guy, although the acronym will not be changed.

    President Nora Avelar announced the kickoff meetingfor our annual fund raiser next March will be held at ClifDochtermans home on Oct 2nd at 5:30PM. We all needto help to make this event a success so come out andadd your ideas to the mix.

    Second notice: Rotarians were greeted today with thesight of cars being ticketed in the parking lot, and afterthe meeting this editor hustled off to the Public Safetyoffice after the meeting to get two parking stickers, easilyand with no charge.

    Golden Gate Fields 7th

    Salute to RotaryFoundation day at the races is scheduled for SaturdayNovemb er 16th. Reservations need to be confirmed andpaid for by October 15th. The cost is $35 per personYou can still add your name to the list just let Frankknow.

    Christmas Stockings: Get your collection of liberatedtoiletries to Barbara Bruner or Debbie Roessler whowill begin sorting them for stocking stuffing!!

    Debbie Roessler attended the first of three FREE

    Leadership Symposia (hows that for Latin?) sponsoredby the Town Network and St. Marys College. About 4045 people attended and a very good interactivediscussion was held. She encouraged all of us toparticipate in the next two sessions on Thursday Oct10th & 24th.

    ~~FUN STUFF!~~

    Recognitions: George Renworth celebrated his87th birthday at home with Pat and his two sonsand popped for $87 to the Club . . . . Gary Irwinspun the wheel for $25 for his and Carolsexcellent vacation with two other local couples inTurkiye (as they spell it), and raised the total to $75in honor of Tony Schoemehls chauffeuring thegroup to and from the Oakland airport. . . . .DavidKruegel visited Chicago for his brother-in-lawsbirthday, and he enjoyed the area, especially theDreyfus Mansion and the Morton Arboretum. Hespun the wheel for$8. . . . .John Erickson went toLas Vegas for a classic car auctionhe sold his623 Impala SS but bought a 61 Impala bubbletop.

    .Frank and Linda May also spent the weekend inLas Vegas to see their kids, but also stopped in atthe car auction, but Frank is too cheap to buy aclassic car and is waiting for his Miata to jump invalue. $20 for the trip. . . . . Sonya Malaga wasawakened recently when a wayward driversmashed into (and totaled) her parked truck. Herride is now a brand new Ford Edge SUV, colorblack, for which she paid $15 to the Club.

    Happy bucks: Colin Barnard, realizing the ups-and-downs of the commercial mortgage market,has taken up the avocation of competitive High-Speed Pizza Box Folding, and offered $1 to theClub for his first win in a contest in Martinez. Joeand Maggie were duly impressed. . . .KevinReneau attended a Senior Helpers convention in

    Austin TX, and was happy that city is within visitingdistance of where their daughter is attendingcollege, and because the convention provided freedrinks.

    The raffle ticket worth $10 was drawn by JohnErickson, but he failed to find the white marble inthe vast sea of clear ones.

    ~~ CLUB ASSEMBLY~~

    President Nora called on Frank May toexplain to the Club about the microfinanceefforts ofKIVA, headquartered in SanFrancisco. During Franks year, donations to

    this organization were given as speakerrecognitions, and the Board has continued tomake donations to KIVA this year.

    Last year, the Club donated $996 which wasused to make $1325 small loans to individualsin 28 less developed countries. Some of theoriginal principal was paid back by oneborrower and re-lent to another one. The Clubintends to make about more 50 loans this year.

    President Nora said that our current speakergift project is supporting a Pleasant Hill RotaryClub project to build a school in Burkina Faso,a landlocked sub-Saharan country in west

    Africa which was formerly known as UpperVolta.

    Further discussion centered around the topic ofmembership and ideas for enlivening ourmeetings.
