    psychological/emotional mistreatment of children.

    What causes Child Abuse ?

    History of child abuse. Unfortunately, the patternswe learn in childhood are often what we use as parents.

    Stress and lack of support. Parenting can be a verytime intensive, difficult job.

    Alcohol or drug abuse. Alcohol and drug abuse leadto serious lapses in judgment. They can interfere withimpulse control making emotional and physical abusemore likely

    Domestic violence. Witnessing domestic violence inthe home, as well as the chaos and instability that isthe result, is emotional abuse to a child

    Types of Child Abuse Child is classified under Four main category:

    Physical child abuse.

    Emotional child abuse. Sexual child abuse

    Child neglect

    Physical Abuse Physical signs. Sometimes physical abuse has clear

    warning signs, such as unexplained bruises, welts, orcuts

    Behavioral signs. Other times, signs of physicalabuse may be more subtle. The child may be fearful,shy away from touch or appear to be afraid to go home.

    Caregiver signs. Physically abusive caregivers maydisplay anger management issues and excessive needfor control

    Emotional AbuseWords. Examples of how words can hurt include

    constant humiliating a child, calling names andmaking negative comparisons to others.

    Actions. Basic food and shelter may be provided, butwithholding love and affection can have devastatingeffects on a child.

    Sexual Child Abuse Has components of both physical and emotional

    abuse.

    Behavioral signs.A child might appear to avoidanother person, or display unusual behavior

    Physical signs.A child may have trouble sitting orstanding, or have stained, bloody or torn underclothes.

    Pregnancy. Caregiver signs. The caregiver may seem to be

    unusually controlling and protective of the child,limiting contact with other children and adults

    Child Neglect Physical signs. A child may consistently be dressed

    inappropriately for the weather, or have ill-fitting, dirtyclothes and shoes.

    Behavioral signs. Does the child seem to beunsupervised? Schoolchildren may be frequently lateor tardy.
