INFORMATION ABOUT THE MAP This map was jointly prepared and printed by Emery County and Utah State Parks and Recreation. The U.S.D.A. Forest Service and U.S.D.I. Bureau of Land Management were not parties to this endeavor. Other OHV maps are available for portions of the area covered by this map and may offer more specific information regarding certain routes. These maps include: Arapeen OHV Trail System, produced by the Forest Service; and the San Rafael Motorized Route Designations, produced by the BLM, Emery County and Utah State Parks and Recreation. For these routes, information has been provided concerning recommended vehicle type, difculty and mileage between intersections. In addition, there are about 85 miles of single-track trails recommended for motorcycle use only. Hundreds of miles of other routes are shown on the map that are open to OHV travel, but are not part of the featured trail system. Elevations – Elevations range from about 4,000 feet in Green River to nearly 11,000 feet on the top of the Manti Mountains. Castle Valley communities have elevations ranging from around 5,500 to 6,500 feet. Swasey Cabin in the middle of the San Rafael Swell is about 7,200 feet. Signing – Route numbers have not been provided on this map. Users must refer to maps indicated in red on this map for route information. Routes are under the jurisdiction of several different agencies. Some routes are well signed and others have no signing. Scenery – All landscapes typical to central Utah can be found in this area including high desert, red-rock and alpine. Some areas such as the San Rafael Swell are world renown. Cultural and Historical Sites – Many rock art panels can be seen along several routes. There are also evidences of historical use from the Old Spanish Trail, early pioneer settlement routes and structures, early attempts to construct a railroad, mining (particularly for uranium), reservoirs and ponds for irrigation and reminants of rock cabins and other structures used by livestock operators. Riding Season - Except for heavy snow years, much of the area can be ridden year-round. The exception is the Manti Mountains, which are only fully accessible from late spring until late fall. Omissions – There are some well-known OHV routes not featured on this map because they are in sensitive areas and are being overused. Riders are encouraged to visit other parts of the map area to lessen impacts to these routes and avoid the prospect of closure by the administering federal agency. Difficulty Rating Descriptions EASIEST: (green) Gravel or dirt surfaces that are relatively at and wide. Generally wide enough for an ATV to pass a full-sized vehicle. May be dusty but are relatively smooth with no rocks or roots protruding more than three inches above the surface. MOST DIFFICULT: (black) Rocky surfaces, sharp turns, switchbacks, steep grades, narrow passages, low overhangs, ledges and large rocks. Can be slippery and muddy when wet. May have tree stumps, limbs or other debris. Machines with low ground clearance may strike or high center on obstacles. Some riders may be more comfortable using 4-wheel drive machines. MORE DIFFICULT: (blue) Loose gravel, sandy, rocky or slickrock surface. May have short sections that are narrow. Can have blind turns, steep or roller coaster grades, minor drop-offs, dust, ruts and frequent changes in riding surfaces. Occasional obstacles may strike the frame. CAUTION: Most of this area is subject to high intensity summer storms and periods of high spring run-off that can significantly change the character of travel ways. The difficulty shown on the map was best information at time of printing. Check with the Forest Service, BLM (Bureau of Land Management) or Emery County for most recent route information.
