United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of The Episcopal Church

for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving

daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. Those who participate in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity.

United Thank Offering is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the UTO monies to support mission and ministry throughout The Episcopal Church and in invited Provinces of

the Anglican Communion in the developing world.

Morningstar Dear Parish Family;

Have you watched any of the Ken Burns documentary on the Vietnam War? As Casey and I watched this program, we saw how powerfully the times in which we live exercise control over the shape of our identities. The young men who first enlisted to go to Vietnam had grown up on stories and heroic movies depicting the great moral war that was World War II. They looked forward to their chance to serve as warrior-heroes, to be like their fathers. In contrast, I grew up on tales of the tragedy that was Vietnam and the senseless horror of war. I look forward to chances to avoid war in the cause of peace. Whatever our personal history, we humans have a tendency to limit our imagination of what the future might be to what we have already experienced in the past. We are constrained, as the saying goes, to fight the last war. Christians are called to live a life beyond the “fighting the last war” syndrome. Christians are called to let the Holy Spirit work on us, opening us up to God’s preferred and promised future, a future not limited to what occurred in our yesterdays. We can only hope to be faithful to this call by listening: listening to the Holy Spirit in Scripture, listening to the Holy Spirit in the voice of one another, listening to the Holy Spirit in the mouth of our neighbors – even and especially with those we disagree. Unfortunately, we live in times where we are taught to speak rather than listen. Unfortunately, our world continues we reward those who project their voice most powerfully into the conversation while generally ignoring those who practice deep listening. Our call as Christians to listen in a way open to God’s promises for our future, rather than holding fast only to lessons learned in the past can sound like an exhausting slog. Then we remember that we are not alone. The Holy Spirit accompanies us on this journey. The Holy Spirit of God continues to work among us to create community and to lead community. The Holy Spirit of God continues to grace each of us with unique gifts for the journey. The Holy Spirit of God continues to weave differentiated unity among us, quenching only the distinctions that lead to injustice. Our past can still be to us a source of wisdom and understanding. Our past should never be to us a prison that separates us from the promises God offers for our future. Peace, Mary

Pledged Income–Year to date $104,357.00 This is 46% of the budgeted amount of $225,000.00 for monies pledged. Total Income - Year to date $186,756.36 This is 56% of the total budgeted amount of $334,276.50. Expenses through the month of January totaled $195,186.53. This is 65% of the total budgeted amount of $300,350.64.

Christ Church Address Reminder The church has become aware that the post office is no longer putting pieces of mail with the church’s physical address on them in our post office box and is beginning to send these to the undeliverable facility. A Deacon’s Journey The Gifts of Fall For most of my life, my least favorite season was Fall. For me, it was a season of death. The green grasses turned brown, the flowers wilted and died, and the crops in the field were harvested and left only dry dirt in their wake. It was a reminder that colder, snowi-er days lay ahead, darkness would soon dominate the 24-hour cycle, and seasonal depres-sion would wiggle its way into my life. But a few years ago, I decided to take time and look closely at the gifts that Fall can bring. I noticed the vibrant colors in the leaves that left their unique patterns in the veins. I watched the geese form long lines in the skies, their honking noises announcing the cooler weather. The em-inent death of summer was an awakening of my senses to the quiet winter evenings ahead. It was a reminder that I need to slow down, breathe, and reassess what’s really important in my life. Here are three gifts, which I discovered Fall has to give:

Balancing darkness with light. The autumn equinox gives us the gift of equal hours of darkness and light. Often we fear the dark and embrace the light. God created both equally. We need them both, to grow, to transform, and to become our true selves. This balance reminds me that I, too, need to keep things in balance in my life.

Letting go. Just as the leaves let go of their hold on the trees, we too must let go of that which is holding us back. We must let the spirit carry us to new opportunities. Sometimes letting go can be painful, and sometimes it is the time of greatest joy. I discovered that I really didn’t know the weight I had been carrying until I felt its release.

Acknowledge impermanence. Isaack (our Tanzanian driver and interpreter during my recent trip to Africa) would say to me every morning, “I am so thankful God has given me another day.” I loved this state-ment, because it was a reminder that my time on this earth is very short, but each day is a new oppor-tunity to do God’s work in this world. And that is a great challenge, indeed.

Like nature, we need to clear out the thick brush and rid ourselves of things we’ve been afraid to let go of. Fall is a good time to shed anything that binds us, keeping from fulfilling our dreams. Without pruning, there can be no new growth. May this season of your spiritual journey give you a chance to rest, reflect, and renew. You are precious, and you deserve it. Amani na Baraka, Rev. A new year has begun, and Food 4 Kids is going strong again.

Thanks to Pinnacle Bank and their sum-mer food drive, we were able to fill our shelves and begin the year with two full weeks of food. We will be ordering food through Food Bank of the Rock-ies, beginning in October, and this will save us a considerable amount of mon-ey for the coming year. We can still use snack items, such as cheese/cracker packs, peanut butter/cracker packs, granola bars, and fruit snacks for the weekly food bags. Please drop off any of these items in the bins in the parish hall, and we will get them to the students for you. Please also consider sponsoring a child for $250/year. Thank you!

Vestry Building Update Christ Church was constructed in 1965 and its ministry and congrega-tion have been historically active in maintaining the church’s physical facilities and doing outreach mission work by utilizing income generated from its Endowment Fund. This year the vestry has undertaken many projects for the stewardship of Christ Church buildings. We have:

resurfaced the main parking lot and restriped it for safety and handicapped access, replaced old sidewalks with ADA approved sidewalks and ramps, rerouted the gas line and updated the gas meter, transformed the dirt-surface parish hall parking lot with an up-to-code French drain and pave-

ment with stripes (!), finalized worship space remodel by reinstalling the ambry and reinforcing the altar rail gate, repaired thresholds and installed weather stripping on exterior doors, installed an interim irrigation system in the memorial garden, thoroughly checked and repaired the lawn irrigation system, installed a preparation island in the kitchen, reworked the heating system in the parish hall.

It was a design/construction flaw of hot water copper piping in the concrete subfloor that has recent-ly resulted in many leaks such that the heating system in the nave was reconstructed in 2015. During this past spring, with a third major leak in our Parish Hall, it was decided to install a forced air wall furnace system. To date, Christ Church has expended $11,441.48 on this Parish Hall project. Other major project expenditures this summer noted above required an additional $41,333.43 be spent.

These total project costs have exhausted the income money allotted for building maintenance and improvement for the 2017 fiscal year. In addition to the above planned project expenditures, it was determined in late summer that our outdated main boiler had developed a leak be-cause of severe corrosion of its metal heat exchanger and needed to be replaced prior to cold weather. A mechanical engineer was contracted for $3,100 to determine our heating requirements and to design a Cad Dia-gram map that was given to two local heating contractors for “not to ex-

ceed” bids. The vestry is planning ways to finance this emergency heating repair. We hope you have noticed and are enjoying the fixes and upgrades around the church. Please take a moment to thank Junior Warden Stan Strike and the Building Committee (Andy Rose, John Gordnier, Marshall Dominick and Louis Kousoulos) for their dedication and hard work.

Why do people give?” That’s a question that was asked in many ways at last year’s TENS conference.

In considering why I give to my parish, I came up with the following:

No. 10: It’s a habit. It’s how I was raised. From my earliest days in Sunday school at Holy Faith in Ingle-

wood, California, I remember folding little blue mite boxes for depositing my weekly offering every Lent.

No. 9: The Bible tells me so. From kindergarten in a little Christian School to my master’s at Fuller Theo-

logical Seminary, I learned that the Bible teaches us to give back. Sharing my resources is clearly a biblical

value.

No. 8: Giving to my parish is fun. Stewardship at All Saints always involves a party. As our rector said in a

recent sermon, Jesus’ parables often ended in a party. And as I understand it, heaven is going to be one mega

-party.

No. 7: Giving to my parish feels good. I think Jesus was on to something when he said it is more blessed to

give than to receive. And studies show that people who give live longer.

No. 6: I give to change the world. My parish is plugged in to where I can make the most difference in ad-

dressing the world’s greatest needs. My parish stretches me.

No. 5: My parish is my community. I have made lifelong friends there; I was married there, and will be bur-

ied there. At my parish I’m part of something larger than myself.

No. 4: My parish is inclusive and not only with a capital “I.” I was tenderly included when I was out of

work, when I battled cancer, and when my husband died.

No. 3: I’ve been blessed and want to be a blessing to others. I am blessed to be able to continue to tithe my

income in my retirement. My parish is a priority in my budget.

No. 2: I want to leave a legacy. I am indebted to visionary parishioners from whom I inherited the church I

love. I owe the same to future generations.

No. 1: I give because I was asked. In turn I’d like to ask you. Won’t you join me in pledging your financial

support on this awesome journey of faith?

Anglicanism Ancient and Modern: A Pilgrimage to England Spring 2018 From pre-Christian roots to post-modern practice, join Christ Church friends as we travel to southern England for a spiritual encounter with Anglicanism. It will have been four years since a group of adults from Christ Church traveled on a pilgrimage together to Scotland and northern England to explore our Anglican roots. We are excited to be planning a follow up pilgrimage to southern England that will look at modern experience of Christian community as well as ancient practices and sacred places. Sunday Morning 9:00 Adult Education “Living in Christ: A Corinthian Study”

October 1st – November 26th We will begin with an intro-duction to Paul’s life from the perspective of his letters then move into 1st and 2nd Corinthians. There are four goals for this study. The first goal is that we recognize in Paul’s mes-

sage of Christ, an experience of Christ that 2000 years later we can still relate to. The second goal is that we gain an apprecia-tion of Paul’s understanding that in Christ God was making a way for all persons to become God’s people and walk a path of holiness and reconciliation with their neighbors. The third goal is that we find ourselves inspired to create authentic Christ-centered communities of faith that are open to all and accounta-ble to the demands of the Gospel. The final goal is that we grow in the wisdom of discerning faithful patterns of life in Christ within our wider culture. “Living in Christ: A Corinthian Study” was produced by The WorkShop, a ministry devoted to teaching faithful Christian practice and discipleship in the light of the New Testament. Its authors are The Rev. Dr. Jan Patterson and the Rev. Dr. John G. Lewis.

October 5th – November 16th Plan to set aside Thursday morn-ings this fall to gather with wom-en of Christ Church for a study of Women Writers reflecting on the Bible. Our study will contin-ue for seven sessions, reading and discussing one chapter of Out of the Garden each week. We will continue to explore our own spiritual journeys in light of what we are reading.

MISSION COMMITTEE OUTREACH – WHAT GREAT PROJECTS ARE OUT THERE? Bargain Box grant money helps many in our community attend workshops; plant gardens and wind-breaks that improve our environment; receive scholarships to attend youth camps; and help children in the court appointed organization. All these outreach programs are supported with Bargain Box grant funds. Thank you for Bargain Box! The second part of Christ Church’s outreach mission funds is the Outreach Endowment Fund. All con-gregates have a say and vote on how the fund money is awarded. It is your opportunity to voice your ideas of where you want the outreach money to go. One line item is for international projects. If you have a special interest in an international project please contact one of the mission committee members listed below. They will help you get your information to the Mission Committee. November is the month the committee decides what international projects will receive gift money from the Outreach En-dowment Fund. ALSO, we are looking for special projects to fund through the Outreach Endowment Special Project Fund. Each year there is $25,000 available for a non-profit organization to receive monies for a one-time special project.
