Dear Friends,

I can’t tell you what a thrill it is for me to present our annual event program on the pages of The Star-Ledger for the second year. New Jersey’s largest First Night® Celebration and New Jersey’s largest newspaper: what a perfect partnership!

For many of you, First Night has become synonymous with New Year’s Eve. Every year for the past 18 years, approximately 10,000 people of all ages from Morris and surrounding counties have gathered in Morristown for a spectacular night of performing arts, culture and a sense of community. We’ve even met some folks from as far away as Texas!

No matter if you are the parent of a “Boomer,” part of the Generation Y crowd or anyone in between, our program offers reasonably priced, high quality professional entertainment that will satisfy everyone. Check out the program. I’m not kidding! The Arts Council of the Morris Area, our Artistic programmer since our inception, never ceases to amaze me with their ability to plan a program that blends the genres of the performing arts with the rich cultures of our community. And last year a new addition to the program, one of the greatest basketball show teams ever, The Harlem Wizards, were so popular that we just had to have them back again this year.

For those unfamiliar, let me explain the beauty of the button. First Nighters wear a colorful button that gains them access to any number of performances they choose and two fireworks displays. Your choices include over 90 performances in 26 indoor venues. No reservations are required. You have 15 minutes between performances and can easily walk from venue to venue. Yes, I said walk! You aren’t going to let a little weather get in the way of this spectacular night, are you? Besides, if you use the map and plan your night right you may only have to walk across the street. You can, however, hop on one of the three shuttles that have been provided by our friends at Atlantic Health/Morristown Memorial Hospital.

You might want to consider coming early or breaking in between performances to have dinner at one of Morristown’s fabulous restaurants. This really gives a whole new twist to dinner and a show! I know you’ll have a great night and the good news is that it does not need to end at midnight. You can stay until morning with a First Night Overnight package being offered by the Hyatt of Morristown. These are always a sell out, so be sure to book early. Call the Hyatt or visit our website to learn more.

We are delighted to introduce two new youth outreach initiatives this year. First, we are sponsoring a mask design competition for county middle school art students. Be sure to look for the winning entries on display at the Masonic Lodge Warming Station on New Year’s Eve. We are also thrilled to welcome a “Coffeehouse” to the evening’s activities. These highly successful coffee houses take place at Morristown High School throughout the year, and we are partnering with their talented organizers to engage teens and their families at St. Margaret’s Church on this special evening. More information about both youth initiatives can be found in this program.

I look forward to seeing you all on New Year’s Eve!

Until then,

From Debbie Williams First Night® ChairDecember 2009

Spook Handy: Folk Singer/Songwriter Sharing the passion, purpose and spirit of American folk music with audiences throughout America, Spook Handy reveals a rich songwriting style influenced by bluegrass, blues, Appalachian and pop music of the 60’s and 70’s. His performances touch on spiritual, social and personal issues and have been compared to those of Pete Seeger (with whom he’s performed) and Phil Ochs. With his music, that one critic called “nostalgic, optimistic, heart-breaking and empowering at the same time,” Spook tells America’s story in a way that opens people’s hearts.

The Frank Vignola Trio: Jazz without Boundaries Identified by Les Paul as one of the “Five most admired guitarists” in the world by the Wall Street Journal, Vignola has toured and recorded with Lionel Hampton, Queen Latifah, Ringo Starr, Madonna, Mark O’Connor, Bucky Pizzarelli and Les Paul. The New York Times calls Vignola “One of the brightest of the young guitar stars.” With “monster” technique and remarkable musicianship, Vignola and his sidemen (bassist Gary Mazzaroppi, guitarist Vinny Raniolo) masterfully navigate through an enormous variety of jazz (and classical) styles, coupling technical wizardry with nuanced sensitivity…all with self-effacing, irresistible humor. This is one you don’t want to miss!

The VooDUDES: Mardi Gras on New Year’s Eve! “Big Fun!” A rollercoaster ride through Gulf Coast roots music with all its attendant sweat, fun and funk, this band’s brew includes New Orleans blues, funk, honky-tonk, zydeco and R&B. Turning its performance spaces into a southern dance hall or Bourbon Street juke joint, the VooDUDES get the crowd smiling and on their feet. Whether touring or opening for Dr. John and other national artists, the VooDUDES “earn their beads,” as the New Orleans Times-Picayune states: “To discover a New Jersey band that plays with the musical accents of the Crescent City is like finding long-lost cousins….”
