• Arrange for a spring inspection of cooling systems. Don’t wait for the first hot day! Air conditioning firms will give better service when they’re not busy.• When the weather warms, deactivate heat system humidifiers. Check the system manual for instructions on how to power down for the summer.• Drain sediment from hot water heaters.By Cynthia Ewer - Editor, www.organizedhome.com.
AFFORDABLE WAYS TO HAVE A FUN SPRING BREAK AT HOME
If the closest you plan to get to a spring break getaway is watching it on MTV, you’re not alone. Gas prices have surged to an average of $3.55 a gallon, turning the idea of spring break into spring broke for many Americans. Oil has been trading above $100 a barrel for the last two weeks pushing airfares up as well. Jet fuel costs jumped by nearly 20 percent in January and according to a report by NPR, ticket prices have increased as much as 30 percent in recent weeks. If resting on the couch is more likely than resting on the beach this spring break, here are some affordable ways to have fun at home.
Build a Home for Someone in Need - Don’t simply spend your spring break in front of the tube. Do something unforgettable with your time and help construct a home for someone in need. Connect with a local building project in your area through Habitat for Humanity. You’ll learn some new skills, help the less fortunate and maybe even work on that spring break tan.
Go Camping - You don’t have to go to an exotic location to hunt down adventure. Chances are there’s something wild going on in your state or zip code. Get help finding it by heading to ReserveAmerica.com. Plug in a location and find the best camping spots available. Save even more money by borrowing gear from friends.
Redecorate a Room - Instead of spending hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars on spring break travel, make an investment into your surroundings. Pick a room in your home and come up with a plan for redecorating it. Get free inspiration from the Before and After gallery at BHG.com. Then head to a thrift store, fabric outlet and home improvement warehouse to gather affordable supplies and tools.
Knock Out Some Top Movies - Chances are you haven’t seen all of the movies on the IMDB (The Internet Movie Database) top 250 list. Knock out some of the best films of all time during your spring break vacation. Check for copies at your local library where you should find many of these hits for free.
Explore a Trail - Take some time to discover a section of the more than 30,000 miles of bike trails, walking trails, equestrian trails, and hiking trails available with the help of Traillink.com. It’s a non-profit helping local communities convert unused railroad tracks into trails. You’ll probably be shocked at how many of these trail projects you can explore without leaving your state. It may not be the journey you were hoping to take this spring break, but at least you’ll be making the most of your time off.By Alison Storm
ST. PATRICK’S DAYSt. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.
FACTS ABOUT CLOVERS• According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the highest number of leaves found on a clover is 14! • One estimate suggests that there are about 10,000 regular three-leaf clovers for every lucky four-leaf clover. • Legend says that each leaf of the clover means something: the first is for hope, the second for faith, the third for love and the fourth for luck.

THE KATY/WEST HOUSTON JAZZ FESTIVAL 2012
Like Music? “You’ll Love Katy!” The Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is scheduled for April 27 and 28, 2012. You will not want to miss this exciting weekend of music and art coming to Katy, Texas!
The purpose of the Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is to increase exposure of jazz, to extend jazz education for developing musicians and to provide entertainment of the jazz music medium in the Katy and West Houston areas. The Festival’s activities are non-competitive and dedicated to the development and preservation of this truly American art form.
The Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is also a uniquely different event for jazz music patrons. All attendees have the opportunity to hear big bands and combos comprised of student jazz musicians throughout the day, as well as featured guitar artists and aspiring music groups, via the component known as the Katy Guitar Fest. Each day then can be completed by attending the Featured Concerts on Friday and Saturday nights by world-renown jazz recording artists. Throughout the day an exhibit of outstanding visual artwork, by area and national artists, known as ARTkaty is on display and provides the opportunity for attendees to view, enjoy, and purchase fine artwork of the highest quality. More information about the featured jazz artists, featured guitar artists, and visual artists can be found on the website:
www.WestHoustonJazz.com. When you have reached the website, you can sign up for updates on the artists and latest information pertaining to the Festival and the professional artists! You can also follow the latest “buzz” about the Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival on Facebook, a link to which can also be found on the website!
Performance participation in the Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is open to all student jazz ensembles (big bands and/or combos) at the middle school, junior high, high school and/or college levels. Performance and participation in the Katy Guitar Fest is encouraged for all guitarists of all ages and all genres of music. Registration forms for each of these components are available on the website: www.WestHoustonJazz.com. Student participating ensembles will receive professional constructive comments by renowned professional jazz artists after their performances, as well as participate in individualized instruction on their own musical instruments through “master classes” with the professional jazz artists. Topics and technical studies ranging from jazz interpretation to improvisation to composition and professional pathways in jazz are all included in the master classes.
Festival attendees may attend any of the daily performances and art exhibit with the purchase of a daily admission wristband. Shuttle buses will be available, at no cost to Festival attendees, for transportation from the local Katy hotels (which offer reduced rates to Festival participants and attendees) to the Festival and return them to their original point of departure. Daily admission wristbands will be available at the entrance to the Katy High School Performing Arts Center or in the lobby of the following Katy hotels located at the Katy Mills Mall area: Best Western Plus; Hilton Garden Inn; Springhill Suites, by Marriott and the Residence Inn, by Marriott.
Admission to the evening Feature Concerts is by ticket only. Tickets can be purchased at the Ticket Window of the Katy High School Performing Arts Center or in the lobby areas of the Katy hotels noted above during the days of the Festival, or in advance from any Katy ISD high school band member, Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music or online at www.WestHoustonJazz.com. Please visit the website to receive information pertaining to the dates for ticket sales at a later time. Proceeds from the Festival go to support the jazz education at Katy ISD high schools.
