Acting Principal’s Report
Active Learners
We are focused on encouraging our students to be ‘active learners’ by engaging in their learning and by
valuing their education. This week’s Positive Behaviour for Success lesson highlighted the theme of
valuing education through a close look at Malala Yousefzai. Malala was
shot in the head and neck by Taliban gunmen while returning home on
a school bus in 2012. In the days immediately following the attack, she
remained unconscious and in critical condition. Malala was shot by the
Taliban for simply being a girl and for daring to go to school as she
desperately wanted an education. On Thursday, March 17, all
students at Moss Vale High School viewed Malala’s speech to The
United Nations where she stated that education is our best weapon
against poverty, injustice, hatred and intolerance. They also heard
inspiring speeches from our School Captains, Harriet Snaith and
Lucy Backhouse, expressing their views on the value of their own
education and how they have taken advantage of the many
opportunities offered at our school.
Congratulations!
I am pleased to announce that Mr Antony Stott has been appointed to a permanent
teaching position in the Maths Faculty after the merit selection process. Mr Stott has
been teaching Maths at Moss Vale High School for the past 12 months in a temporary
position and we are extremely pleased to have him as a permanent member of staff.
Year 6 Parent Information Evening
We held a very successful information evening last Tuesday for interested parents of Year 6 students.
The evening was well attended and we had positive feedback from numerous parents about the quality
and relevance of the information provided about our school. I would like to thank our talented Year 7 choir
and Eve Thomas of Year 8 for their outstanding performances on the night.
Parent and Citizens 2016
I would like to thank all of our P&C members for their tireless and
generous support of our school community. Congratulations to the
following successful office bearers for 2016, Annmarie Makepeace as
President, Sandra McCue as Vice-President, Erin Holohan as
Secretary and assisted by Tracie Webb, and Debbie Reed as
Treasurer.
I look forward to working with this outstanding team of dedicated
parents throughout the year.

Merit System and Vivo Rewards
Congratulations to the students who are receiving Vivos for consistently achieving success in the
classroom and in a variety of extra-curricular activities, and are reporting when they reach a new level in
the school’s Merit System. Congratulations to the following students who will receive Merit Awards at the
Week 10 assembly:
Moss Vale Show
I am so very proud of our hardworking students and staff who showcased their skills and talents at the
recent Moss Vale Show. In particular, I would like to thank Ms Simone McNeill and Brook Roberts for
leading our students in the cattle showing where they placed extremely well and received champion heifer.
Taylor Carter, Year 9, was one of our many students awarded prize certificates at the show. Taylor won
2nd and 3rd prize in her age division for her photography. We also had a number of placings in other
classes, see the Support unit report on page 8. Students represented our school admirably in the parade
with first in the intermediate section amongst a huge number of competitors.
I would also like to thank Mr Kevin Stone and Mr Warren Miller for their generous support of our cattle show
team.

Dear Parents, Caregivers and wonderful students of MOSS VALE HIGH SCHOOL
It was a great pleasure to talk to Robertson Public School‟s P & C recently about our wonderful school. I
was able to highlight a range of opportunities that our school gives to all our students. Even after a period
of time talking about PBS, Portfolio Class, Junior Citizens of the Year, et al, when it came to parents asking
questions, it became clear that those parents whose older students are attending Moss Vale High School
are also so proud of the school and were able to highlight two incredibly important and successful
programs that I had missed with my enthusiasm.
They were :
“Wonder”
What a great, inspiring book which fits so easily into the PBS “Kindness Project” It is clearly the most
successful and engaging of the three special books from the past three years. Additionally, the kindness
quotes on our school sign (which Graeme Day used to promote the school and kindness in the
community) were a highlight of some families‟ trips into town. There are many more to come!
“Support of our Students’ Learning”
Our wonderful staff‟s focus on Quality Learning and Learning Support Team (lead by Mrs Pepping) has
made a massive impact on the performance of our students, their enjoyment of learning and hence
enjoyment of school and positive direction to their lives.
Thank you to the staff and P & C of “Robo” Public for your invitation.
Additionally, I would like to wish the Staff, Parents and Students going to New York for the CAPA excursion
during the holidays all the very best. Excitement is building and we are all so looking forward to stories
and photos. (We have started the paperwork for September‟s exchange to Korea as well)
Congratulations to all involved in the Moss Vale Show. The school excelled by having students involved in
horse and cattle events, art and produce in the pavilion and support in the running of the parade through
town and to the show.
Congratulations to students, staff and families. There are plans to make Moss Vale High School‟s
involvement in 2017 to be truly special. Watch this space!
I am aware of a number of students participating at the Sydney Royal in a range of areas. I wish them all
success.

On Tuesday 8 March, 30 Year 10 students set off on our
annual pilgrimage to Mittagong RSL to compete in the
Southern Highlands 8th Annual Science and Engineering
Challenge. Moss Vale High School has been proudly
represented at every challenge held in the Highlands and
has always performed admirably.
This year was no exception with the group of 12 boys and 18
girls applying themselves diligently to their „challenges‟.
Some groups found it tough to get started but they rallied
and kept at until they succeeded. While not our most
successful year in terms of overall place and point score,
we won the „Stringways‟ activity and placed 6th out of 7
schools overall, it was one of the best in terms of
enthusiasm, resilience, adaptability and student
representation of our school.

Moss Vale students from Years 9, 10 and 12 were again involved in
showing cattle at both Robertson and Moss Vale shows.
The cattle were trained by all the students over two LONG terms. The
students having differing backgrounds in stock handling again posed
“interesting” episodes! However, through a great deal of hard work and by
the students learning from and helping each other they all came through
unscathed.
It starts with the basics of learning stock behaviour, and how to be safe.
Then it‟s learning how to lead the cattle safely; handling them from washing
and putting them on the truck to then knowing and being able to present
the stock in a show ring. It is early starts, a lot of hard work, learning about animal welfare and learning how to work in a team. It
had its moments with some not so cooperative beasts and I‟m not talking just cattle here!!
With success not only in the stock classes; we managed to succeed very well in the paraders‟ classes. Especially given ninety
percent of the students never having worked with stock so intensely nor been to a show.
A huge thankyou again to Warren Miller „Airlee Stud‟ for providing not only the stock but the feed and his expertise in stock
handling. Warren has supported Moss Vale High School for a number of years and without his assistance we could not run such an
activity. This is how we get our students into the beef industry by exposing them to this type of activity. This whole process is such
a great learning opportunity albeit a stressful one for the teacher! Often a once in a lifetime experience for many of our students.
I would also like to thank Kevin Stone for his assistance in carting the stock.
And last but by no means least a HUGE thankyou to Brook Roberts (Farm Assistant) for his support and helpfulness throughout
the whole program.
Team included: Year 12 – Sally Atreed, Kate Beresford, Matthew Christensen, Brandon McGrath, Jordan Stone, Sam
Drayton, Tyler Duroux, Brock Clayton; Year 9 - Emily and Katelyn Hall; Year 10 - Leah Drayton, Tiarna Hartman, Luke
Plumridge, Briganza McConnell, Ethan Deleeuw, Brittany Stone, Erin Olsen, and Nikki Vaughan.
Congratulation‟s to all the students!

The Tell Them From Me student feedback survey
I am delighted that this term, our school, like many others in the state, will
participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student
feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and
measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other
student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing,
engagement and effective teaching practices.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/
information-for-parents
The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on
what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact
with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve
how they do things at school.
I want to assure you that the survey is confidential and school staff will not be able to identify individual students
from their responses. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It
will be administered during school hours between 14 March and 8 April. Participating in the survey is entirely
voluntary.
A consent form and a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) for parents/carers about the survey is being sent
home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the consent form to
school by Monday 21 March. The FAQs and copies of the consent form, including translated consent forms, are
available from the website above.

It all began on December 14.
We boarded the plane at 8am and landed in Hobart at 11am. After disembarking the plane and collecting our
luggage we boarded our coach to Richmond where we saw the famous Richmond Bridge, the oldest bridge
still in use in Australia. We stopped for a photo opportunity and for a walk around. We got back on the coach
and headed to the Tessellated Rocks. We walked along a bush walking trail to the bottom where we got to
walk across the rocks. We spent about half an hour there; we got back on the coach and headed to the big 4
park on the water where we were staying the night. We had arrived at the park and were allocated into our
cabin groups to go have a shower and get ready for
dinner. We dined at the Fox and Hound Inn, where we
got an amazing dinner and dessert.
Once we were finished we went to Port Arthur for the
ghost tour, which went for about three hours. Black-
cloaked tour guides vividly recounted real people‟s
documented stories of sightings and unexplained
occurrences of the past. Their rich storytelling revealed
strange unexplained occurrences during Port Arthur‟s
history, events that baffled and alarmed convicts, free
settlers, soldiers and today‟s visitors alike. The
mysteries resonated in our minds long after the lantern
dimed at the end of the night. We went back to the
cabins and had lights out by 11pm. We had to get up
and be out by 8am. That day we went back to Port Arthur for a proper, in-depth tour. It was so beautiful. We
went on a Ferry across to the Island of the Dead, where some of the convicts were buried.
Later that day we went to Mount Wellington and spent an hour on top of the mountain admiring the scenery
and the view of Hobart. On the way back down the mountain, our bus driver burnt out the coach‟s brakes. We
had to go to the bus depot to get the brakes repaired. We went to the Chocolate Factory and got to see all the
chocolate being made and make purchases at discounted rate. Then we travelled on to Launceston visiting
Cataract George. At 'The Gorge' there are walking tracks, a swimming pool, the world's longest single span
chairlift, a restaurant, a café, a suspension bridge and panoramic lookouts with spectacular views. Peacocks
and native wildlife add to the experience.
After a walk along the river we undertook our last leg of the trip in Tasmania heading to Devonport to board
the Spirit of Tasmania. Accommodation was in cabins and we slept to the gentle rocking of the ship. We
docked in Melbourne in the early hours of the morning, where we went on a shopping spree at 7am in the
morning after breakfast in the already bustling city. Lunch was on St Kilda‟s beach promenade. St Kilda is
Melbourne‟s favourite beachside playground. The afternoon was spent with more shopping at DFO before
heading over to the Victoria Markets for the world famous night markets.
All in all it was an amazing experience I had a load of fun. My favourite part of the whole experience was the
Chocolate Factory. The one minor negative was the nine hour bus trip back to Moss Vale from Melbourne
with about 100 stops! Big thanks to all the teachers Mrs Finlayson, Mrs Pepping, Miss McNeill and Mr Deitz.

Jamberoo River Rock Our week started with canoeing on the Kangaroo River.
Glyn from the Kangaroo Valley Safaris collected us from
school and took us to meet Les at Bendeela, all ready with
the canoes. After instruction on how to paddle we were on
the water. We travelled upstream as far as we could go,
had lunch and a swim. We returned after a game of canoe
polo for a quick swim and trip back up the mountain to
school. The weather was perfect for a day on the river.
Day 2 was down the mountain to Wollongong. Here we
started at Hangtime for an hour of jumping and games.
Everyone had a good time. Pizza arrived for lunch which we
shared. After a quick clean up, we were back on the bus to go
to Hangdog. Everyone gathered their energy and were off
climbing and caving until it was time to go.
Day 3 was at Jamberoo Recreation Park. The weather wasn‟t as
kind to us this day, as a big storm rolled in. Everyone kept
running before lunch, one to keep warm and two to fit in as
much as possible before we caught an early bus back to school.
Hopefully next year all will be right with the weather.
New plans are afoot for 2016. Canoeing and Jamberoo are still happening but this time we shall attempt the tree
adventure in Nowra.

SRC SNAPSHOT
What’s been happening?
Valentine‟s Day– The SRC sold over 200 roses and helped spread love and positivity throughout
the school. We made a small profit, adding to our funds for Bowral hospital.
Kindness Character- The Kindness Project is in full force and we have been helping out as
„Kindness Fairies‟. Please support The Kindness Project and our random acts of kindness.
PBS Lesson– Our PBS lesson focuses on Malala and being an active learner. As student leaders,
we are passionate about improving student wellbeing and helping as much as we can. SRC
members will be leading lessons and assisting teachers.
Close the Gap Campaign– A number of SRC members are helping with the BBQ and helping to
close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
What education means to me– Jacinta Burns, Year 10
Education by definition is „the process of acquiring general knowledge, developing the power of judgement
and generally preparing oneself or others intellectually for future experiences.‟ To me, education is much
more than that. I was asked to write a speech on what education means to me and the more I thought
about it, the harder it was to attain a simple answer. Education to me is not just sitting in class taking notes
about a specific topic, to me it is taking down notes that will be the basis of my coming future. To me,
education is a combination of not only schooling , but also experiencing, decision-making observing and
socially interacting. Without all of these things it would be near impossible to get a viable career and live a
worthwhile life. Education to me is not just an accumulation of facts nor is it just the development of one‟s
intellectual capabilities. It is having the power to be the best you can be. These things are only part of the
process of being educated, but the end product is far from just being a human full of facts. Education to
me is the ability to relate oneself to the external world and the
inner world of thought and feeling.
A world without education is not a world worth living, by
combining knowledge and education with life experiences
accumulated over the years to come:
We will make a difference. We will change the future.
We will be a force to reckon with.

Volunteers Needed An invitation is extended to all families to consider volunteering some time in our school canteen. Volunteer help is a great way to keep in touch with the school and students. The help you can offer can be adjusted around your ability, ie as little or
as often as you are able. Some jobs may include :
help to prepare and make the lunch orders eg. sandwiches
help to make the over-counter food eg. fruit cups
fill drink fridge
serving students
GIVE IT A GO-COME AND VOLUNTEER-MEET PEOPLE AND MEET YOUR CHILD‟S
PEERS
We thank and appreciate the work our volunteers undertake in the canteen. Your work enables us to offer a canteen facility for our students and to be able to offer a variety of menu options at reasonable prices. Without the volunteer support, it
would be very difficult to maintain our facility. THANK YOU.
