This convent was founded in 1283 by the
Abbess Dona Mor Dias. In 1330, the Queen, Dona Isabel of Aragon,
took an interest in it and had a new church built in Gothic style.
The site of the convent was proved a bad choice, due to flooding from the River Mondego.
This convent was abandoned in 1677.
Its present appearance is probably the result
of work carried out on the orders of King Manuel I in the early 16th century.
This was the main gateway of the medieval city wall.
Its oldest part dates from the 9th century. Originally, it consisted in 2 turrets linked by an arch.
