The Cedars Post Mother and Daughter by Nancy Lebo and Dana Lebo My husband Art and I moved into The Cedars, among the first to do so, in 2004. After visiting us in our new home and looking around Chapel Hill, our daughter Dana declared, “I love this place. Good- bye, New Jersey!” So Dana and her family, including three young sons, moved to this area in 2005. Consequently, we had the joys of active grandparenting for the next decade. Through those years, we helped carpool the boys to soccer, swimming and basketball practices and attended every school concert, ball game, swim and cross country meet. We gathered together at The Cedars for holidays, birthdays, bar mitzvahs and graduation celebrations. Dana, her husband Andrew and the boys were frequent guests in the Cedars Dining Room at our favorite table in the corner overlooking the water feature. We held the wedding rehearsal dinner for Dana’s older daughter in The Cedars Ballroom. So many memories to be preserved. When the boys were off to college, we continued to travel to their sporting events, awards and graduation ceremonies. Yet the constant stream of activities slowed somewhat. In 2015, to fill this void, The Cedars Creative Memoir Writing Group was born, headed up by daughter Dana. Maybe it was her pay-it-forward time for the countless hours I had spent driving back and forth between The Cedars and her house. Now, she did the commute in reverse. For eight weeks, Dana drove two times a week to meet with five women including dear Thelma Baker, Sarah Kittner, Jeane Suddarth and Dede Houston. We explored best practices in writing stories of our life experiences. At the end of two months, we opted to continue—and met about once a month for the next three years. In 2017, another group was launched, and then another—culminating in a group today with Members spanning back to 2015. The Pandemic did not slow the present group down one bit. In fact, they accelerated their engagement. Natalie Campbell, Thomas Wolf, Bill George, Jacob Mathai, Gustavo Montana, Julia Allen, Nancy Lebo, Frank Sloan, and Betty Swift opted to meet every Monday evening on Zoom to keep the flame alive. They mastered the technology of emailing digital copies of their memoirs to each other, sharing files, turning on their videos and unmuting themselves to join in some lively online discussions. Looking back on the years, Dana and I realize as Mother’s Day 2021 approaches, we have created a living memoir about how a mother and daughter can remain a vibrant part of each other’s lives. By continuing to sow stories from our experiences, we have found a unique way to stay active and tie that mother- daughter bond afresh. We learn and grow together from each story we choose to write and count our blessings that the Pandemic didn’t stop us. Instead, it gave us new material. We hope the stories we share will move our granddaughters, their daughters, daughters’ daughters—and sons as well— to laugh, to cry and to action. For in the end, nothing is more maternally satisfying than to love and nurture our offspring with stories from a life well lived. MAY 2021 Four generations—Nancy, with daughter Dana, Dana’s daughter Sandra, and Sandra’s daughter Ryan—mother, daughter, granddaughter, and great granddaughter.

get moving in mayPole Walkingwith Joan OntjesWednesday, May 5, 3pm Front of ClubhouseCome join us for Pole Walking, a fun exercise with many added benefits. The Mayo Clinic (see below) thinks this activity is great for us. If you already have two poles, please bring them. Otherwise we have extra poles for your use. The first session will be taught as a group. Later sessions may be offered in smaller groups so that Joan can focus on good technique. If you have a physical limitation that you think we need to know about, please let Joan know ([email protected]) so that she can prepare to make adjustments.

Could walking poles help me get more out of my daily walk?Walking poles work your arms, shoulders, chest and upper back muscles through a functional range of motion as you walk — which can help you turn your daily walk into a full-body workout. This activity is sometimes called Nordic walking or simply Pole Walking. Most walking poles have rubber tips that grab the pavement and wrist straps that secure the poles to your arms. With one walking pole in each hand, you grip the handles and push off with each stride.Consider the benefits of walking poles:

The arm movement associated with walking poles adds intensity to your aerobic workout, which helps you burn more calories.Walking poles improve balance and stability.Walking poles help you maintain proper posture, especially in the upper back, and may help to strengthen upper back and core muscles.Walking poles take some of the load off your lower back, hips and knees, which may be helpful if you have arthritis or back problems.Walking with poles may improve your mood.Walking poles in various fixed or adjustable lengths are available online and in many sporting goods stores.

—Edward R. Laskowski, M.D.Mayo Clinic

"Joan, I want you to know how much I appreciate your teaching me how to use hiking poles to improve my walking balance. Fourteen years ago an accident during surgery left me without the use of one foot. Over time, my balance has become more impaired, and the likelihood of falling has increased. Pole walking improves my balance—with the added benefit of providing great exercise!"

- Gretchen Aylsworth

"15 years ago I had a hip replacement that left me with damage muscles in my right leg. I have been walking with two poles ever since that surgery. But I never felt truly safe and was always anxious that I might fall. Since working with Joan for the last few months I am much more confident in venturing out. Joan is a fabulous teacher and I am so grateful for her help. She is patient but stern and knows her 'pole stuff'! Give up your walker and go polling with Joan."

Virtual UNC Health ChatSponsored by the Health and Safety Committee with Dr. David GoffTuesday, May 4, 3pm via Zoom Invite; also on Channel 24David A Goff, MD, is the Medical Director for UNC Urgent care at Carolina Pointe II. He has more than 40 years of experience, mainly in Internal Medicine. He will discuss:

✚ What health problems are appropriate for the urgent care setting versus when should you go directly to the Emergency Department?

✚ Are you aware that UNC Hillsborough is excellent for geriatric issues? Easy parking, and less crowded—therefore that wait times are shorter. However, if there is acute coronary syndromes, or stroke you should go to the main hospital.

✚ Do you know about video visits? They are available 24/7. Things that require teaching and advice are well suited to video, such as diabetes management, insulin adjustment, medication side effects, depression or anxiety issues, among others. Anything that requires a physical exam such as a sore throat or abdominal pain should still be done in person.

Learning Opportunities

How Many Birds Can You Identify?Bird watching is a great way to connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors, and North Carolina provides a wonderful opportunity to see a variety of species. One reason bird watching is so popular is that birds are everywhere, and anyone can spot and observe them. To get started with bird watching, all you need to do is look out your window or head to the bird sanctuary or the NC Botanical Gardens. Tom Driscoll gave us an informative Birding 101 lecture in April to get us started. During the months of May and June record as many birds as you can (watch for a bird identification sheet in your pigeonhole) and return to the Concierge Desk by June 30 and we’ll compile a complete list that will be announced in July.

Emergence: Healing from the Pandemicwith Mitzi Quint, LCSW, PLLCThursdays, May 13 & 27, 10am, 1pm & 3pm Private DiningIn early 2020, COVID-19 radically changed our known world. For over a year, we have been living with loss—globally, nationally, individually, and as a community here at The Cedars. Even if we have not personally experienced the death of family or friends due to the virus, we have all felt its far-reaching impact on our daily lives. And, for the most part, we have had to cope with massive change and loss while being isolated from our usual forms of support. This 2-part workshop is a chance to come together to explore both the difficulties and the possibilities we have encountered during the pandemic, to share in community what we have been shouldering alone. You will have the opportunity to reflect on your individual experience through brief writing exercises as well as to share your thoughts in group discussion. The first session will focus on acknowledging our losses and personal struggles; the second will focus on exploring our strengths and possibilities in a word that is once again changing.

Mitzi’s work has always been about loss, from her earliest years supporting families struggling with a child’s severe mental illness to her 18 years as a grief counselor with Transitions LifeCare and Duke HomeCare and Hospice.Register on Cedars Connect or call Tara Pierce at 919-537-0128 or Laura Booker at 919-259-7944, deadline May 10. Group size is limited to 10 for health reasons and to maximize the opportunity to share our experiences with one another.

Documentary Film ClubMy Octopus TeacherFriday, May 28, 1pm Channel 24 3:30pm Discussion via Zoom led by Gwen ClaireMy Octopus Teacher is the second film in our Documentary Film Club directed by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed. This 2020 film, nominated for an academy award, documents a year spent by filmmaker Craig Foster as he forges a relationship with a wild octopus. The film is shot as Foster free dives in a kelp forest near Cape Town and a curious young octopus captures his attention. He visits her den and tracks her movements every day as he wins the animal’s trust. She allows him into her world to see how she sleeps, lives, and eats. The bond between this very smart animal and a man burned out at middle age is most compelling. Foster shares how the octopus gave him lessons on the fragility of life as well as humanity’s connection with nature. Also available to stream on Netflix.
