Smarter Motion Control Systems: Innovations In PWM Drive Technology for Nanometer Level Motion Control ApplicationsTraditionally, manufacturers of equipment with de-manding motion control requirements such as front end semiconductor inspection, FPD metrology, biomedical scanning, and more, have often been required to use linear servo drives to meet aggressive motion stage performance requirements, such as nanometer level standstill jitter and finely controlled velocity. Unfortu-nately, linear drives inherently suffer from inferior effi-ciency, and therefore higher costs and larger footprints, when compared to their PWM counterparts. There are new design techniques and control algorithms that can exceed the motion performance of linear drives, while maintaining the efficiency and elegance of digital PWM drives. Enabling technologies, control architectures, and real world examples will be discussed.

Other benefits of applying such motion control technology in conveying applications include re-duced energy consumption and maintenance as well as increased durability. New integral control motor technol-

ogy permits conveyor drives to be deployed as either stand-alone systems or working in conjunction with ma-chinery PLCs.

3:30Sine Commutated “Servo” Stepping MotorsNew advances in controlling stepping motors are switching servo applications and saving 50 percent or more. Closed-loop sine commutated stepper motors combine the advantages of a high torque stepper and servo motor technologies. Sine Commutated stepping motors produce up to three times more torque than the same size servo motor at lower speeds, so they can direct drive many applications eliminating the cost of a gearbox. Sine Commutated stepper motors deliver high energy efficiency, smoothness and high load tolerance. Compared to servo-motors, sine commutated stepper motors have the same on the fly error correction dur-ing the move. Because they of eliminating the gearbox they are often smaller and more precise because of no backlash. Integrated motor, encoder and control solu-tions reduce panel space and greatly simplify wiring.

Power System Harmonics Workshop

Commercial and industrial companies have increas-ingly adopted the use of power electronics equipment to achieve greater energy efficiency and improved process control. Many companies are using power electronics equipment such as adjustable speed drives, uninterrupt-ible power supplies, computer controlled equipment, etc. With the adoption of power electronics equipment, the subject of harmonics has become an important topic for people responsible for installing, specifying or servicing electrical and electronic equipment.

Power electronics equipment typically causes harmonic distortion and can degrade the quality of electrical power in a building, increase equipment operating temperatures, increase demand on power sources and reduce electri-cal system efficiency. As power electronics equipment be-comes a larger percentage of the total building loads, or when the building contains sensitive loads, the problems associated with harmonics become more apparent.

This half day workshop explains harmonic distortion and its causes, identifies problems associated with harmonics and methods to identify reduce and to avoid harmonics problems. Upon completion of this course, participants should have a meaningful understanding of harmonic voltage and current distortion, the impact that harmonics can have on electric power systems, the typical causes, simple methods to analyze harmonic distortion and methods to minimize harmonics.

This course is applicable to electrical industry profes-sionals serving either industrial or commercial environ-ments. For maximum benefit of this course, participants should have an understanding of basic electrical prin-ciples such as Ohms law, power, electrical metering, motors and general electrical equipment and systems.
