Your future with Mott MacDonald

Mott MacDonald was recommended to me by a friend, so I did a summer internship and joined the

water team after graduation. I have had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of water and sanitation projects around the world.

I have worked on design and construction of micro-hydro sites in Scotland, created an investment plan for water and sanitation infrastructure in Zambia and Rwanda, and worked on potable water pipelines in East Anglia. The best part of working here is my colleagues. The calibre of both senior and junior staff is exceptional, people are friendly and care about you and your development.

Chartership is very much supported and encouraged at Mott MacDonald. We have periodic reviews and then every year we have a review that includes the chance to discuss career development aims. Senior managers care about my development and have supported me in pursuing experiences that are important to my career plans.

I joined Mott MacDonald after graduating, working in the highways team. My work involved design

projects ranging from traffic calming to detailed design for a major new highway and included a 12 month secondment to Stockport Council.

Next, I joined the light rapid transit team working on a number of schemes, undertaking highway and track alignment design while increasing responsibilities in project management. I played a key role on Nottingham Express Transit: Phase Two, submitting the Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) application and participating in the public inquiry.

Following this I was seconded to Laing O’Rourke working as a site engineer responsible for managing structural repairs and improvements to bridges along the Manchester Metrolink.

My range of experience with Mott MacDonald has allowed me to develop a diverse set of skills and knowledge. This breadth of experience was crucial in gaining chartered status.

Joining Mott MacDonald was an easy decision as it is the leading power sector consultant in the UK,

meaning that I would be able to work on a variety of major power projects.

I work in the transmission and distribution division where I perform power system analysis for various electrical networks such as liquefied natural gas plants.

In my first year I have greatly increased my knowledge and experience by working alongside experienced professionals who are very helpful in explaining things and supporting me.

I am involved in Mott MacDonald’s Young Professional Excellence programme where I have arranged lunch time presentations to share skills and knowledge gained on projects. Mott MacDonald also has internal competitions to encourage innovation and promote a learning culture. A highlight in my first year was winning the power unit’s Best Paper Award.

Work placements

We understand the importance of giving you an insight into our exciting industry to help you understand how you apply

what you’re learning into practice. As a result, we offer paid summer internships (6-12 weeks) and industrial placements (6-12 months) across most of our business sectors.

We look to recruit students who have impressed us onto our graduate scheme

Paid summer internshipsJune-September

Industrial placements 6-12 months

How involved you get is down to you but the more questions you ask, the better your experience with us will be. During your placement you will work with experienced teams, giving you the chance to test your technical skills and get a taste of what it’s like to be part of a global consultancy.

Our summer internships are normally during June to September and although we have offices across the UK, due to the length of our placements we encourage you to apply to locations where you will be able to arrange suitable accommodation. Many of our industrial students relocate and we are able to provide advice about finding suitable accommodation in the area.

We place a lot of emphasis on giving you a realistic view of our world so you can decide if it’s the industry you want to work in. We look to recruit those students who have impressed us during their placements onto our graduate scheme, so remember this could be the start of your career with Mott MacDonald.

Details about how to apply and the process involved can be found in the Application section.

FAQs

How many graduates and students do you recruit each year?In 2013 we will recruit between 150 to 200 graduates on to our training scheme and 100 students for summer internships or industrial trainee placements.

Do you only recruit the degree disciplines mentioned? The ones mentioned are the disciplines we have the most opportunities for. We sometimes have specific requirements for other disciplines – these opportunities will be advertised on our careers site.

As our requirements change each year, you can contact our team to discuss if there will be an opportunity that matches your skills. Please do not simply email your CV – you will be asked to apply for a specific vacancy being advertised. But you can submit your CV via our portal if there is not a role that matches what you are looking for.

When does your graduate scheme start? We do not have fixed start dates but most graduates start working for us between July and December. We will try to accommodate when you’d like to start. If a role requires a particular start date we will discuss this with you before the interview.

Do you need industry experience to apply for the graduate scheme? No, although some experience is an advantage as it means you understand the work environment and have made an informed decision to work in our industry. If you are not due to graduate this year, we suggest you apply for one of our placements to gain experience.

What are your entry requirements for the graduate scheme? You should have achieved, or be predicted to achieve, a 2:1 or above in a relevant degree.

Can you help engineering graduates with a BEng become chartered?Graduates with a BEng degree are supported and encouraged to gain an IEng qualification and then proceed to CEng. This can be done through the technical report route for your respective engineering Institution. Alternatively, you can apply for funding to complete a postgraduate qualification.

Do you have opportunities outside of the UK?Graduates we recruit for our UK training scheme will be based here, however, there are some opportunities for graduates to work overseas on projects. These opportunities depend on the sector you choose to work in and whether the current projects require the skills of a graduate.

Graduate positions in other countries are advertised on our global careers site or you can contact our local offices – details can be found on our website. Remember to check whether you are eligible to work in the country you are applying for.

Do you offer financial sponsorship to students? We are committed to supporting the students who will become the graduates of the future and that is why all of our placements are paid. We are involved in various schemes, such as the QUEST scholarship, but we do not currently offer financial sponsorship outside of these schemes.

??

EXPERIENCE IS AN ADVANTAGE

SOME GRADUATES WORK ON OVERSEAS PROJECTS

Can graduates apply for summer internship or industrial placements? No, these placements are specifically for students. We sometimes require graduates on a temporary basis and these positions will be advertised on our careers site.
