From The Principal Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Tena koutou katoa.
Welcome to the 2014 school year. I would like to extend a special welcome
to the new students and parents who have joined our school community
from contributing primary schools and other secondary schools around the
country and also the international students who have joined us from
various countries around the globe.
At the time of writing, our deans have processed over 37 more student
enrolments than this time last year which is above both our own estimates
and those of the Ministry of Education. It is fantastic to see our local parent
and student community supporting their local High School and it is also
very pleasing to see a number of students being attracted from other
secondary schools around the region and country as well as a growing
number of adult students studying both part-time and full-time courses.
We trust that you will enjoy your educational journey here with us.
A warm welcome back to our returning students and their families. I hope
that you are rested and re-energised after the summer break and ready for
the variety of challenges and rewards that 2014 has in store for you.
Staff Changes 2014

NCEA ACHIEVEMENT 2013 Motueka High School compared with National Average for
Decile 4 Schools
Motueka High School National Average D4
2013 NCEA Results Our student’s 2013 NCEA results are generally pleasing. In particular, it is encouraging to see that Motueka High School students, on average, performed better than their peers in other schools of similar type across the range of NCEA levels. Another significant feature of the 2013 NCEA result set is the continued improvement in achievement of students who identify as Māori. For many years, a distinct gap in performance has existed between the achievement levels of Māori when compared to other ethnicities. We have been working with our Maori community and Te Āwhina, our local Marae to build a closer partnership. We have been listening to our community to distil what success means to our Māori learners and their families. During 2012 and 2013, our entire school staff spent a day at Te Āwhina Marae exploring ways to support our Māori learners. It is fantastic to see this effort being transferred into achievement for our Māori learners. In particular we are delighted to see a disproportionately large number of students who achieved NCEA with endorsements for either Merit or Excellence. In order for a student to receive NCEA with an endorsement, they must achieve “Merit” or “Excellence” grades for at least 50 of the 80 credits they need to attain NCEA. It is great to see the efforts of students and teachers in the pursuit of academic excellence being recognised. Congratulations are extended to the students below who obtained NCEA with endorsements for Merit or Excellence: We are delighted to see the results of this work beginning to reflect in our NCEA results.

John Middleton, Grace Parry,
Emma Patrick, Elizabeth Roxburgh,
Sophie Harrison
Congratulations go to all students who were awarded prizes or scholarships in 2013. Keep up the great work. School-wide goals for 2014 Throughout 2014, the staff and trustees at Motueka High School will be looking to further build on our levels of student successes in raising student achievement. Specific targets for 2014 include focus on:
- Improving student attendance
- Targeting further improvement in
achievement rates for Boys, Māori and
Pasifika to reduce the achievement gap
with other groups.
- Targeting NCEA endorsements for Merit
and Excellence
- Supporting the Bring Your Own Device
(BYOD) initiative
Raising Student Attendance One of the primary drivers of achievement is attendance at school and in class. Being present in class is a huge factor in ensuring both student achievement and engagement. One of our targets for this year is to maximize student attendance in class. Parents and caregivers can play a huge part to help with this. I wish you all the very best for a productive term. Like to contribute to the school but
not sure how? Sponsor a Chair!
Motueka High School has
50 teaching / learning
classrooms with student
chairs. We are slowly
replacing the old style
chairs with ergonomic
chairs, but it is a costly
exercise and is dependent
on adequate funding.
The Bodyfurn chair is the style we already have in
some of the classrooms and we would like to continue
these throughout the school.
Our students have reported that the new ergonomic
chairs are to be a huge improvement on the old chairs
and much more comfortable.
We would welcome contributions towards purchasing
more chairs for the students. Each chair costs $150
(inc gst). Please contact Julie Tideman –
School Blazers available to order
Would your student like to have their own school
blazer? They are worn
at many school events
like our Open Evening,
at prize-giving and any
public appearances such
as ANZAC Day, music
concerts and any time
they are representing
the school for sporting,
arts and leadership
events.
The Motueka High
School blazers are
ordered when sufficient
numbers are received. The price of the blazer is
approximately $120. Please place your order with
payment at the school office.
Motueka High School Buses
Following recent changes to school bus routes by
School Support, the School Transport Provider for our
area, a number of concerns have been raised by
parents, particularly in the Moutere Highway area,
Mapua and Waiwhero regarding pick-up and drop off
times.
Motueka High School is taking a keen interest in this
matter because we believe that the current situation is
unacceptable for students and make it unnecessarily
difficult for them to attend their local High School. In
one present example, some Mapua-based students are
sitting on the bus for more than an hour in order to get
to school each day.
School bus route planning is the responsibility of
School Support and the Ministry of Education so
Motueka High School is working hard on behalf of
parents in lobbying these groups to review the current
situation. The Principal and Board Chair are both
involved in discussions with School Support so watch
this space!
Parents are also keen to know when students may use
the bus to visit friends at the weekends. School
Support stipulates that students may only travel
between school and the home of their primary
caregiver. We have however negotiated an
arrangement to allow them to visit their other parent
unofficially. In the past, if students wished to use a bus
to visit friends, a note from both host and guest's
parents was required 3 days before the visit. The
Mapua bus and the Motueka Valley bus, are already at
maximum loadings so continuation of this practice
could be difficult. We will continue to negotiate in this
area and will let you know if it is possible in the future.
We will continue to keep you informed of any progress
and thank you for your patience.

PREVENTING & ADDRESSING BULLYING
Bullying is an unwelcome behaviour based on power
and control of another, usually more vulnerable
person. It raises its head in most, if not all, schools
from time to time and can also be present in teams,
clubs and workplaces. Motueka High School wants to
change that, and our focus on Human Rights, PB4L
and Restorative Practices is a great start.
The good news is that, through awareness raising
programmes with staff and students, we try to
prevent bullying occurring and to nip it in the bud if
it does. Bullying thrives on secrecy, so we encourage
students to report any that they see or experience.
They can fill in a Bullying/Harassment form,
available from The House, The Library, The Student
Office, their Form Class teacher or on the School
Website, in Moodle. The victim can be kept safe and
empowered whilst the bully is educated, counselled
and punished for any repeated incidents.
Tips for parents when dealing with bullying:
Please tell us. We can’t stop bullying if we don’t
know about it.
Encourage witnesses to bullying to come forward
and report it in confidence to our counselling/
guidance staff, senior management or a teacher
they feel confident about approaching.
Anti-bullying interventions can be safe and low
key if the victim is worried about retaliation. We
have a policy of working with the victim to find
safe and helpful ways of preventing bullying.
Reassure your child that something can be done.
It’s not hopeless and sometimes telling someone
in authority is sufficient in itself to make the
victim feel more powerful.
Our counsellor is available through Te Whare
Pora, the Student Support Centre. Please ring
her, and make an appointment to come in.
Please don’t coach your child to retaliate
violently. This usually results in the victim
coming out worse off and escalates the violence.
Vulnerable people are not in the best position to
act aggressively or assertively. It is the bully who
must change his or her behaviour with
appropriate support.
“Putting things right” seems to be an approach
that works better than blaming and punishment.
Evidence suggests that this focus has a better
outcome for the victim and all concerned.
Optional Restorative or No-Blame meetings will
be offered.
ATTENDANCE ARTICLE Did you know? There is a strong correlation between regular attendance at school and academic success. If a student is not in class then they cannot achieve to their potential. If a student achieved 80% in a test they would be pleased with the result. An 80% attendance rate however, means that a student has missed on average, 1 day per week for the whole year. This is clearly unacceptable. The Ministry of Education’s expectation is that the average attendance rate for students is at least 91%. The only justifiable reason for absence from school is illness, bereavement or with the Principal’s permission (family holidays are not a justifiable absence). Illness - After 3 days continuous absence the parents
may be asked for a medical certificate. If there are on-going problems that are causing a child to miss school, please contact the Dean to make an appointment to discuss these issues.
Bereavement – Please advise the school as soon as practical of the details.
Principal’s Permission - When applying for the Principal’s permission to be away from school, you need to apply in writing at least a week before the student will be absent.
Please Note: Letters from the Principal acknowledging an absence do not necessarily mean approval; if the absence is not for illness or bereavement it could still be marked as an explained absence but not a justified absence.
NCEA Assessment - If a student is absent for an NCEA Assessment they must complete the relevant form to apply for an alternative assessment date. The form is available at the office or can be downloaded from the school website. A copy of the letter from the Principal granting permission for a justifiable absence must be attached. If the absence is not justifiable or the reason for the absence is not acceptable, the student will get “not achieved” for that assessment. If there is a reassessment opportunity the student will be able to attempt the assessment at that time. Your child’s attendance rate will be published with each report. If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance, please contact the relevant Dean.
Please use the Parent Portal, accessible from the school
website to monitor your child’s attendance and
academic progress.

LOCKERS
This year we have secure lockers that students are able to hire through the School Office. The cost is $50 for the
year with a refund of $10 on return of the school padlock. If a padlock is lost, a replacement may be purchased at a
cost of $15.00.
The student’s responsibilities include:
Using the lock allocated, do not lend or use any other lock. The caretaker will cut off non-school locks and
the contents will be removed
Keeping the combination number to the locker private
Ensuring that valuables and devices are stored away securely
Looking after the locker and padlock for the duration of the year
STUDENT ABSENCES
If your student is sick or has an appointment during school time, please ring or email the school office (528 9050)
on the day of the absence. Staff will code the absence accordingly. Students are to report to the office on return to
school from an appointment.
The only justified absences (other than for school planned activities) are for: illness, medical appointments or
bereavement. For medical absences, a doctor’s certificate is required after 3 days of absence.
For any other leave, please write to the Principal advising the date and reason for absence, well in advance of the
planned absence. It is at the principal’s discretion as to whether this leave will be recorded as justified or
explained. A family holiday is not a justified absence but we appreciate you advising the school of the details of the
absence. If leave is explained this could potentially jeopardise NCEA assessments, affect attendance rates and
also attendance to the School Ball.
SCHOOL FEES
The beginning of the school year is a stressful time financially for families. At MHS we encourage you to take
advantage of our automatic payment option for your student fees. Forms are available online (under Our School) or
by request to the school office. If you are paying your fees online, please remember to include your student’s
name.
Parent Info
UNIFORMS
Uniforms are expensive so please name all your student’s items (including shoes/sandals). We will return named
items if they are handed in to the office. It disappointing that we regularly have a large pile of unclaimed, unnamed
items in the office. Unnamed items will be given either to the clothing mart for resale, or for non-school uniform, to
the Salvation Army or Red Cross. The Uniform Shop is open on Wednesdays during school lunch-time.
Both DPs carry spare uniform for students not wearing a correct item of uniform. Please send a note with the
student to explain the absence of uniform to the DP and to let us know when it is expected that the incorrect item
will be replaced.
Uniform passes are only written before school so your student should seek these prior to going into class. Please
help your student comply with the rules by insisting that boys are clean shaven, students have no visible piercings
and that only the approved school shoes are worn.
PARENT PORTAL
This can be found on the MHS website under Sign in and Links. To access this you will need a password from
school. Please contact your students form teacher or the office to obtain this. In here you will find useful
information about your student including: attendance, pastoral (discipline matters), timetable, fees, as well as daily
student notices
LUNCH PASS
If you live in town and your son/daughter wishes to have lunch at home, and you are satisfied that there will be
adequate adult supervision, please complete the application form for a permanent pass. This can be obtained from
the office or online (on the Home page of the website)
Students must carry the pass when leaving or returning to the school grounds. Students may only go home to the
address on the pass. If the pass is lost, a replacement is available for $1. Please ask at the office.
TOWN PASSES
All students who need to go to town require a town pass. Please provide a note stating: the reason for leaving
school grounds and your name and contact phone number. The note must be placed in the box on the student
counter in the morning and the pass will be available at lunchtime.
Buying lunch downtown is not a valid reason for leaving the school grounds. We have a tuckshop for students to
purchase lunch or snacks.
NZQA FEES
If you have a student completing NZQA standards, the fee will be $76.70 per student and will include up to 3
scholarship subjects. Do you hold a Community Services card or are you on a benefit? If you are, you will be
eligible for Financial Assistance which will reduce the fee to $20.00 per student, up to $30.00 for two or more
students. A Financial Assistance form will need to be completed (under “Our School” or “Sign-Ins & Links” on the
website) and returned to the office before the fee is able to be reduced.
I hope this is of help to you. Our office staff are happy to provide assistance if you have any queries.

PTA
WHY JOIN THE MOTUEKA HIGH SCHOOL PTA?
One of the biggest benefits of joining the PTA
is getting connected to teachers, staff, other
parents and students. It is the easiest way to
learn what is going on at our school and be ‘in
the know’.
The PTA is a great place to network and share
resources. There are often lots of questions
for students and especially for parents during
the year. Being part of the PTA makes it
easier to get support from other parents, ask
about their experience and compare notes.
Being part of the PTA is also a great way to
get to know the teachers, principal and
support staff of your son or daughter’s school.
This is an opportunity to see how you can
help the teachers, and in turn, teachers can
provide support and learn more about your
son or daughter.
By joining the PTA you have a voice. It is a
good environment to exchange ideas and
support improvement at your school. See a
problem.....work through the PTA to get it
resolved.
Become a role model for your children. By
being a part of the PTA you show your son or
daughter that they are important, and that
you value their education.
WHAT DO PTA MEMBERS DO?
There are plenty of ways to participate as a member
of the PTA.
Help once a term with baking (or more often if
you wish)
Help at the Year 9 BBQ
Help once a year with security or coat check at
the School Ball
Help with one-off events such as Fashionista
Attend committee meetings once a term
Help with Open Evening, Prize-giving or the
Clothing Mart
If you have another service to offer or any ideas for
fundraising, we would be delighted to hear from you.
The next PTA meeting is in the Staff Lounge on:
Monday 17 March at 7pm
Come along and see how you can help your school. If
you prefer, you can phone and chat to one of our
members. There is a large group of parents on our
"Help List" who assist in various ways when called
upon. We welcome your support.

Principles of flight
During the Rich Learning (for Years 9 and 10) days in
Term 3 we will offer a Principles of Flight course run
in conjunction with Nelson Aviation College at the
Motueka airfield. The course will include an
experiential flight. If your child is interested in taking
part the cost will be $50.
Skydiving
Senior Physics students learn the principles of
projectile motion. With this in mind we are
organising a trip to the local skydiving outfit. The cost
for a jump is at a reduced rate of $200. A date will be
confirmed shortly. There are some good free device
apps for recording acceleration, altitude and
gyroscopic action available through the student pages
of Moodle.
Mathematics
A very warm welcome to Mr Rory Barrett. As well as
his role as teacher in charge of Computing (2 senior
classes), Rory is teaching 3 Maths classes – Y9, Y10
and Y11. Rory has won several National Awards for
Mathematics teaching and his experience is a huge
asset to our department. Overall, it has been a great
start to the year – nearly all Y9, Y10 and Y11 students
have purchased their required homework book and
the Y13’s are well underway with the use of their
Nulake write-on booklets. We do not use calculators
in Y9 but all other year levels are expected to turn up
to every Maths class with their calculator. We
recommend that students NAME their calculators –
we have an engraver available in the department –
students simply need to ask their class teacher to
make this available.
COMPETITONS
Otago Junior Problem Solving – Wednesday, April
2nd. This is targeted at our very top mathematicians
at Y9, 10 and 11. We generally invite up to 8 students
at each year level to enter – a letter has been sent

Australian Mathematics Competition – Term 3,
Thursday, August 7. We encourage all students with
a strength in Mathematics, to enter. Last year, we had
nearly 100 students take part. We are aiming to keep
that great participation going. We provide practice
papers (with answers) to all participants and it is a
great way to extend students’ thinking. Class teachers
will be sending letters home to those students whom
we think will benefit from taking part in the
competition.
NCEA RESULTS 2013
Special congratulations to our senior students who
gained a Mathematics subject endorsement in the
2013 exams. In our Level 1 and 2 courses, students
must gain at least 4 out of their 5 assessed standards
at Merit or higher in order to gain a Merit
endorsement in Mathematics. An Excellence
endorsement requires 4 out of the 5 standards to be
graded at Excellence. We had 14 endorsements at
Level 2 and 31 at Level 1 – well done!
Manu Vink, Isabelle George, Anita Reiter and
Brittany Puata (Level 1) along with Daniel Tideman
and Gemma Lamont (Level 2) gained Excellence
endorsements. They have set the bar for 2014!

Welcome to 2014. We are looking forward to another
successful year in our Departments and what better
way to begin than to celebrate our 2013 NCEA
successes.
English NCEA Level 1 – we had a whopping 14 Merit
endorsements. Special congratulations go to Stella
Bogdanoff, Alok D’Hondt, Isabelle George, Mikaela
Grant and Rebecca Sandlant, who all gained
Excellence endorsements.
English NCEA Level 2 – 8 Merit endorsements.

an Excellence endorsement gained by Sophie
Harrison.
Media Studies NCEALevel 1 – Chloe Taylor, Merit

Media Studies NCEA Level 2 – 3 Merit
endorsements, plus an Excellence endorsement
gained by Tika King.
We are all very proud of these endorsement results
and congratulate all of these students (and their
teachers!) for their dedication and hard work.
Looking ahead for later this term, the English
Department will be preparing for its annual Speech
Competitions. In classes, all students will be involved
in planning, writing and practising speeches, to be
ready for the start of Term 2, when the speeches will
be assessed. The more confident speakers will go on
to compete in the school’s Year Level Competitions.
We urge parents to support and encourage their
children to participate at the class level, at least.
There will also be outside speech competitions for all
students to enter, as well as the school’s Nga Manu
Korero English Speech Competition for students of
Maori descent. We have a very strong and proud
history of speech making at Motueka High School
and it’s certainly something we all look forward to.
Gateway
Gateway – it’s all about
health and safety…
Every week the media reports a
number of accidents in the
workplace so that’s why all
Gateway students must pass a
Workplace Health and Safety unit before going out on
their work placements. Upon completion of this unit,
forty six senior students will be commencing work
experience placements in a variety of industries.
We have had fantastic support from local businesses
offering placements for students in the past, however
we are always looking for more opportunities for our
students. If you know of any businesses able to take a
Gateway student on a work experience placement, or
to find out more about the programme, please call

Music
Another busy year is underway in the Music
Department. Students wishing to have instrument or
voice lessons this year need to pick up a brochure and
complete the form, available from the school office. Tutors available this year are as follows:
Singing Gene McNae & Hilary Sinclair
Brass Mick Dowrick
Woodwind Simon Williams
Guitar Aroha Pascoe & Gene McNae
Drums Gabor Irmalos
Piano Julie Rodgers
Private lessons for violin, ukulele and recorder are
also available.
We are pleased to welcome
singing and guitar tutor Gene
McNae to the Music
Department. Gene has a
Certificate in Contemporary
Music from MAINZ and
graduated with a Bachelor of
Music in Jazz Performance
from the NZ School of Music
in 2011.
Gene moved with his family to Nelson two years ago
to begin a new job and be closer to family.
Activities planned for this term include ‘Showcase’,
April 13 at 2pm, featuring our many talented
singers and instrumentalists, and a primary school
tour scheduled for later in the term.
School Singers, Jack Inglis Hospital
November 2013
As well as lessons the various music groups are also
getting underway. We have The Motueka Singers, an
all-comers choir, Suono Bellissimo, an auditioned
choir, Jazz Band, Concert Band for wind, brass and
percussionists, Junior Band for those just starting to
learn their instrument, Brass Band and a Ukulele
group. Students are also encouraged to start their
own bands and use the facilities of the music
department.
NCEA music continues to grow with 26 students in
the senior music class. As well as performers there
are also students interested in using music
technology and setting up and running a sound board
to enhance performances. We have recently
purchased a Presonus digital board to use with these
courses. There are unit standards in these areas as
well as achievement standards in performance,
composition, analysis and musicology. Students get
to pick which standards they would like to study to
follow their own areas of interest. Look out for the
NCEA performance evenings to follow our talented
senior performers and international students’
progress throughout the year.
An event that combines all the arts is the Talent
Quest. Students need to start thinking about their
entries, with heats starting the second week of term
two and the final taking place on May 22. We look
forward to seeing what the fabulously innovative and
creative students of Motueka High bring to the stage
this year.

kayaking. This term the focus for senior students is
mainly on kayaking both white-water and sea
kayaking. Already some have mastered kayak rolling
in the school pool, and over the coming weeks we will
learn more about boat control and travel to the eddies
and rapids of the Motueka River and for the Yr 13
class down to the rivers around Murchison. Later in
the term, the Yr 12’s have a 4 day sea kayak
expedition in the Abel Tasman NP to further
consolidate their skills.

INTERNATIONAL DEPARTMENT
Our new Internationals have arrived to the wonderful
weather of a New Zealand summer, a welcome change
from the winter temperatures that our Northern
Hemisphere students were experiencing. We welcome
Nana, Misa, Dea, Yusuke, Larissa, Leonie, Barbara,
Paul, Carolina, Jil, Marieluise, Julia, Lea Fabienne and
Ayaka to our sunny summer weather. Our students from
Brazil (Maria, Ana, Leandro, Aline, Monique, Matheus,
Ednayany, Wilma and Julia), are finding our days and
especially the mornings, a wee bit chilly.
All students are settling in well and are already getting
involved in sports teams and planning for the talent
quest. A big thankyou to Emma and Mackenzie, all our
returning Internationals and the awesome kiwi students
who go out of their way to make our Internationals feel
so welcome.
Our sincere thanks go out to our wonderful host
families. We appreciate what you do so much.
If you think that you would like to host an International
student, please contact Rose Scheib through the school
office.
Building Technology
This year there are quite a few radical changes to the
Year 12 and 13 Building programmes at Motueka
High School. After spending the first two terms of
2013 out in industry, Mr Stow is full of new ideas to
try to infuse his students and raise student
achievement and engagement further.
This year we will take the learning experience outside
of the classroom as much as possible. We have been
allocated an area of land next to the horticultural
gardens and we intend to use this to allow students to
build a number of construction projects.
Each student in the class will this year have the
opportunity to build a deck, a fence and a few other
basic projects. All students will be expected to use
their Maths skills to help their group set out their
project and we are expecting them to work to tight
tolerances. Level 2 and Levels 3 / 4 BCITO Unit
Standards are awarded to successful students.
The projects are specifically designed to get pupils to
work in teams rather than individuals. One of the
things I learnt whilst away was that all the building
trades work as a team and very rarely in isolation.
Students need to share their skills and experiences to
produce the item.
This year we have a full class of 24 students. We are
looking for support from our community. If there are
any ex-trades people or DIY enthusiasts who would
be keen to help out we would like to hear from you.
Please contact Jake Stow on
Finally, if your child is in this class can you please
ensure that they bring their building clothes and
shoes as we do not want them to return home with
their uniform covered in mud! Thanks.
The Base
Students at the Supported Learning Centre all
received awards at the Prize Giving held at the Base
prior to going home for the Christmas Holidays. Cole
Brewer received the Pastoral Award for consistently
helping and supporting his class peers. Students
received their awards from Mr Haines. The occasion
was finished off with a well-deserved morning tea
celebration.
We have a new staff member working with us in
2014. Mrs Shelly Green teaches students Soft
Materials and Food Technology. Ms Kidd and Mr
Laing are also back again teaching their respective
subjects of ART and PE. We also have Mrs Fiona
Wright with us this year. She works as a Teacher
aide both in the mainstream classes and at the
Supported Learning Centre. Returning staff who
teach and support students at the Base this year are
HOD’s Allison Jensen and Cameron Jensen, Support
Staff Jean Nikkel, Marian Herrick, Ellie Tomsett,
Trish Taylor and Morris Lawrence.
Mrs Green is teaching soft materials skills to students at the Supported Learning Centre.

Student Support
Services
Our Deans, Form Teachers and Class Teachers are usually the first people on hand to offer advice and guidance to help students reach their full potential. More specialist help is available at Te Whare Pora, or “The House”, as it is known to the school community. Services there include individual or group counselling, and guidance programmes provided by our professional counsellor, Lorraine Mullings, who oversees the Student Support Services. Carol Fowler, the Truancy Officer, also has an office there and is another ready source of care and assistance. Similarly, Jan Trafford, SENCO, is happy to provide testing and assistance for students who find elements of their learning difficult. Across the deck from the House is “Nic’s Place” where Tony Aikenhead, the Careers and Gateway Specialist and his assistant Kathryn Beatson are based. We farewell and give our heart-felt thanks to Ali Comins, Motueka Family Service Centre’s Social Worker, who we “borrowed” for two mornings a week and whose services are needed back at her office. However, we can still request social work help and look forward to a continued relationship with Ali and the other MFSC social workers and staff. The House is a “Safe Haven” for students in distress, whatever the reason. We can refer students and parents on to other sources of help if needed. Some regular helpers who provide a service at the House include Michelle Tukana, Alcohol and Other Drug Counsellor; Tracey Harrison, MFSC’s Sexual Health Nurse; Paul Johnson, SVS Living Safe’s Youth Worker,
Twenty senior students were trained in their roles as Student Contacts last week and are available at the House on a rostered basis to provide mentoring, mediation and support for any students who request help.
Requests or referrals for any of these services can be made through Lorraine, by telephone, or by students themselves through appointment request slips. All services respect confidentiality, within ethical limits – thus parents and caregivers will be advised of imminent harm or of barriers to learning.
MHS Netball
The Motueka High School Netball Committee is looking forward to another great season of Netball. We hope to have a record number of teams representing the school this year and we are looking for volunteers who can help us ensure our students, coaches and managers have an enjoyable season. If anyone is interested in being a coach, manager, umpire or if you would like to help the committee in a less committed capacity please email our school Netball coordinator Rochelle Roberts at [email protected]
Trials
Year 9 Trials Tuesday 4th March 2014 Motueka Rec Centre 3:45pm – 5:30pm.
Year 10 Trials Wednesday 5th March 2014 Motueka Rec Centre 3:45pm – 5:30pm.
Call back trial for Year 9s and 10s Thursday 6th March Motueka Rec Centre 3:45pm – 5:30pm.
Senior Trials for Years 11, 12 and 13 Tuesday 11th and Thursday 13th March 2014 Motueka Rec Centre 3:45pm – 5:30pm.
Students are asked to bring a water bottle and to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. If there is a reason why a student cannot attend trials please email Rochelle Roberts on the above email address.
All students intending to play for Motueka High School this season must sign up on the sheets in the school gym before 24th February.
Last year our umpiring team, the Tweeters, was a huge success. We would like to continue to have a team of umpires that get coaching and are helped towards reaching their umpiring goals. It is our aim to help these students work towards umpiring qualifications and tournament umpiring experience. Tweeters need to be available to umpire each Saturday and be able to attend 8:30am coaching sessions every second Saturday during the Netball season. Any students wishing to sign up to be a Tweeter for 2014 can do so in the school gym.
If any students still have Netball uniform items from 2013 please return these to the office as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing you all at the 2014 Trials!
