DRAFT CLASS STRUCTURES and STAFFING 2019

The projected number of students for 2019 is 260. Next year the school will maintain 11 classes to ac-

commodate enrolments from children living within the school’s intake area. All classes will comply with

the Department of Education recommended class sizes. Classes are subject to change and dependent

on student enrolments. Staff will be appointed in accordance with Department’s recruitment processes.

Careful consideration will be given to class structures, staffing, friendships and the placement of stu-

dents.

Students come to school to learn and be educated. Every child has the opportunity to play with friends;

before school, recess, lunch time and after school. Students will come together for a range of activities

eg: fitness, sport, swimming, dance, community singing etc. During class instructional time students

are: an individual; part of a small group, part of a class group, year level group and within a phase of

learning. Have faith in your school.

Room 11, Year 2/3 Assembly

On Friday, 9 November, it was Year 2/3, Room 11's turn to present the school assembly. As well as our presentation of "The King's Breakfast", by A. A. Milne our class were also proud to lead the school in the commemoration and remembrance of the 100 year Anniversary of the end of World War 1. The assembly area and library were decorated with red poppies made by all the students. Parents were then invited to enjoy morning tea. We would especially like to thank Mrs Amber Aitken, our DSTA for organising the morning tea and also to Mrs Brazier, grandmother of Oscar, Abbey and Zac for knitting the beautiful red poppies that were worn on the day.

Visual Arts

The annual Art Exhibition will be on display after school today in the library and junior block wet area (near rooms 9, 10 and 11) from 3.05pm until 4.30pm. Artwork from students in Pre Primary through to Year 6 will be on display. Please come along to view the wonderful drawings, paintings, collages, clay sculptures and selected Perth Royal Show 'Cat' and 'Poultry' art competition entries. I would like to sincerely thank my parent helper, Jane Rammell, for spending many hours yesterday helping me set up the exhibition.

I am very pleased with the effort shown by students this year when creating their artwork during les-sons and I commend them for their mature approach when selecting their piece for the exhibition. Well done everyone!

Remembrance Day 2018

DSTA News

On Friday, 9 November, Room 11 had their assembly. Part of this formed a small commemoration for

Remembrance Day. Isabelle gave us details about what November 11 signifies and why we continue

to commemorate it. Mrs Oakes also spoke about what Remembrance Day meant for her and why we

continue to remember the sacrifices people made for our country. The community song “The Green

Hills of Albany” was sung beautifully by all. Students in Room 11 each wore a hand knitted poppy

made by Abbey’s grandmother, Mrs Anne Angelof. I would like to publicly say thank you to her for the

time to make them, as they will form part of future commemorations in the school. Special thanks also

to Mrs Sue Straiton, who also knitted poppies for our display and helped me with our morning tea fol-

lowing the assembly.

As we lead into the last half of Term 4, I will be organising farewell activities for some of our Defence

families who are posting out and will be starting at new schools in 2019.

An example of a care parcel is now in the Front Office hallway, filled with potential treats and a list of

other things you can send. This parcel will be sent on behalf of the DSTA program here at Mount

Claremont, but remember anyone can post one up until December 6. Full details can be found here:

Pre-Primary Gardening Club

The Pre-Primary had their Gardening Club this week and harvested some very large vegetable.

IMSS (Instrumental Music School Services) 2019

I am very excited to announce that our school has been allocated a third instrument by IMSS; guitar, to commence next year, so now we will have 15 places to offer our beginner Year 5 students commenc-ing in 2019.

I test all year 4 students at the beginning of Term 4, with a standard Musical Aptitude Indicator test supplied by IMSS. Students then go through a standard selection process also set by IMSS. We have 5 places in brass, 5 places in clarinet and now 5 place in guitar commencing the year they are in Year 5. Students are given the opportunity to continue in the program until the end of Year 12 in a govern-ment school. We reserve one place in each beginner instrumental class to allow for any new Year 5 students starting at our school. New Year 5 students will be tested in week 1 or 2 of Term 1, 2019 and they will go through the same selection process as the other students did.

The first round of Expression of Interest packages will be sent home with selected Year 4 students next week. The parent information evenings will be in the week commencing 26 November. Please see the IMSS website for more details and information. http://det.wa.edu.au/imss/detcms/portal/

Outdoor Classroom Day

On Wednesday, 28 November the Pre-Primary to Year 6 classes will be taking part in Outdoor Class-room Day. In the morning, the class teachers will be teaching their own class curriculum based lessons outside the usual environment of the classroom. After recess the students will then join with their buddy class to take part in four activities.

Outdoor Classroom Day is special, because when teachers take learning outdoors they report some powerful impacts: Children’s behaviour improves, whole classes are excited to learn, and individuals who feel inhibited by the curriculum often thrive in an outdoor environment.

When adults think back to their own happiest memories of childhood, they frequently recall the joy of playing outdoors. Play is not only central to children’s enjoyment of childhood, but teaches critical life skills such as problem-solving, teamwork and creativity.

All the teachers are hard at work planning their activities and I am sure the day will be roaring success.
