Mount Maunganui Intermediate is a place where young minds grow and individual passionsare discovered.

Our students develop a sense of their true worth and forge new relationships with their peers, whanau, teachers and their community.

Our school is inclusive and nurturing, as emerging adolescents are encouraged to try new things, make mistakes and discover their talents.

Class Programme You will be carefully placed in a composite Year 7 and 8, mixed ability class. You will have a caring, supportive teacher who will meet your individual learning needs. You will likely have the same teacher for the two years you are at MMI. This means that your teacher will know you and your whanau really well. At MMI, we believe that relationships are the key to academic success. So, if there needs to be a few changes to class composition, we will make them at the end of each school year, in consultation with teachers and whanau.

Accelerate Programme At MMI we have two accelerate classes. These are aimed at extending and challenging the learning of our high academic achievers. Are you working above curriculum expectations? Do you thrive in a challenging, fast paced environment?

To be selected for these classes, you will need to be nominated by your parent and teacher. You will sit pre entry tests to be considered for this class. An extra fee of $60 per year is attached to this class to pay for the Future Problem Solving Programme and software licenses that support the accelerate class curriculum.

“MMI offers an amazing amount of curriculum opportunities. Whether you’re into maths, science, writing, problem solving, or creative thinking, there is something for you. We are always getting encouraged and challenged to be our best. The teachers always try to make learning fun, so that we take pride in our work and strive to do well on our own.”Luca Ririnui

Bilingual Programme Manaakitanga is a core value in which we live and learn by. Our bilingual unit offers our students a place to belong and excel. Our programme is designed to extend our tamariki in their reading, writing and mathematics whilst deepening their knowledge and skill in Te Reo Māori me ona tikanga. You do not need to have been a part of a bilingual class in the past to be a part of this kaupapa at Te Kura Takawaenga o Mauao. To join our class you simply need to have a passion to learn Te Reo Māori, and a commitment to the kaupapa of the class.

Special Needs Programmes Do you have special learning needs? Do you need some extra help to support you in your learning or behaviour? Many students choose to come to MMI because we work hard to provide a calm, inclusive and learning-focused school environment. What are some of the things that will help your learning? – Accelerated Learning in Mathematics – Accelerated Learning in Literacy – English Language Learning for speakers of other languages

– Positive Behaviour for Learning – Programmes and support for students with learning and/or behaviour difficulties

– Restorative Practices – Tutor Reading – Special Needs Coordinator – Strong working partnerships with support agencies

What’s best for you as a learner?

“Being in the Bilingual Whanau Class helps you grow your Maori culture and embrace it. Our class helps bring confidence to be who you are, by showing your true Maori potential. That is what being Maori is to me. The Bilingual class has been a great opportunity for me, to learn in Te Reo and in English. I also love learning Maori legends/stories to do with my Whanau and my Iwi.”Anna-Jayde Fifield

Literacy and Numeracy You will be taught Reading Writing and Maths in groups. These may be groups based on ability, mixed groups or workshop based groups where students choose lessons that meet their learning goals. We expect all students to make a minimum of one year’s progress, with learning being accelerated for students who are at risk of not meeting curriculum expectations.

At MMI we learn through an integrated curriculum, which means we try to break the barrier between subjects and merge curriculum areas together to answer our inquiry questions. Last term we learnt about relationships with the environment. We merged subjects together by using all subjects and physical education to get a deeper understanding of our inquiry. For example, we created posters, action plans, static images, as well as a statistical investigation, written explanation and verbal presentation about our environmental issue. By doing an inquiry presentation you improve your skills in all areas of learning.

Goal Setting You will work with your teachers, regularly throughout the school year, to identify your strengths, next steps and learning goals in Literacy, Mathematics and other learning areas. These goals will be regularly revisited, with you being responsible for collecting evidence that you have achieved them. Your current goals will be shared with your whanau at learning conferences, twice, during the school year.

Integrated Curriculum

Just like at primary school, teaching and learning is based upon the New Zealand Curriculum. Inquiry units or integrated units of work are collaboratively planned by teachers, with an emphasis on the key competencies and what you need to learn. We plan the big learning with input from students and the learning is designed to meet needs of emerging adolescents.

Kiwi Can Programme This programme teaches you essential life skills and values such as resilience, respect, integrity and manners. All classes attend a Kiwi Can lesson once a week. Specially trained Kiwi Can leaders work in pairs, delivering high energy, interactive and most importantly, fun lessons. They are awesome role models to look up to.

What do you need to learn?

Blues

Blues are awarded for high achievement in sporting, cultural, academic and service endeavours at MMI. You can earn them for representing our school in many areas, and/or for being a high achiever in an area such as service to the school. Blues come in the form of a fabric strip that we encourage you to get sewn onto the sleeve of your school uniform polar fleece.

“At MMI there are many opportunities for leadership such as being a class councillor or head student. Even if you aren’t walking around the school with a shiny badge, MMI still encourages you to be a great role model with jobs such as being a road patroller. If you do get an opportunity to be a leader here it’s an amazing achievement. You will attend weekly councillor meetings where you discuss issues in school, bring feedback from class meetings you have run and help fundraise. You also get to go on the most inspirational camp where you learn to be a better leader and meet other leaders from different schools.”Daisy De La Haye

Band Quest At the moment the drumstick count-in reached the fourth beat, I hit my left hand and reached for the strings. My right hand started strumming. At that moment, I was introduced to a new sensation. My voice followed the sound of the music and my band quest experience had officially begun! It’s surprising that a little commitment and determination can go a long way and even lead to a standing ovation! The two original songs I had written and our band had performed had won two awards! This was an amazing experience and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my band mates.

Camp:“To me, the idea of jumping into the water hole, felt like a one way ticket to a broken arm! As we approached the edge, my best friend was bursting at the seams with excitement. She never looked back… gone… she had jumped without hesitation. I was worried out of my skin for what felt like an eternity, but she came running back up the path, screaming “OMG! That was so much fun!! Come on Emma, you can do it!” I was too afraid. My mind raced. What will happen? Is it too cold, too high? Will I survive? My thoughts flew through my head as I stood paralysed on the edge. The kind Dad encouraged me and… three, two, one, I finally jumped. Whoosh, I fell for what felt like forever. Then, there were bubbles all around me and a freezing sensation surrounded me in the river. It was all over and I was sooo pleased I had jumped!”By Emma Harrison

Cross country: Gasping for air, hand on my side, I bound along the hard sand that bullies and bruises my feet. I feel like my legs will just crumple beneath me, but I keep going, the wind in my hair, salty water lapping at my sandy feet. The finish line is in my sights but my fellow competitors are at my heels like a pack of wolves giving chase to their prey. I concentrate hard on the large mob of parents, teachers, and students, who seem to be getting closer as I run, but I can’t tell. I keep running faster and faster, becoming more and more fatigued. Would I even make it to the finish line? Finally I do and as I slow down, a wave of dizziness washes over me, followed by a wave of relief. I was finished!!By Sebastian Heath

Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) Your camp will most likely take place in term one. Camps are organised on an annual basis and the location can change from year to year, based on availability. Communication about your welfare and progress is encouraged at all times. Parent’s first contact should be to the class teacher.

“Starting a new school is always nerve-wracking. On my first day I was shaking as I crossed into unfamiliar territory. So many negative thoughts raced through my head, but I was met with a totally unexpected environment. Mount Maunganui Intermediate (MMI) is a fun, open learning environment where everyone feels accepted. There is a feeling of confidence around and the strong circle of trust ensures everyone feels safe and included. The teachers are committed, listen to what you say and try and make it happen. “I have to say, on my first day at MMI, I had massive butterflies fluttering around in my stomach. But, as soon as I arrived in my classroom, I felt very welcome at Mount Maunganui Intermediate. On the first day I got to know all my classmates names and know a bit about everyone. At the start of the day I got showed my way around the school and by the end I knew where everything was. All teachers here at Mount Intermediate have a positive vibe and encourage you to try your hardest. Different teachers here all have different styles of teaching. My top tip for students arriving at MMI would be to stay positive and have a go at different opportunities that come flying your way, whether it be a sporting opportunity or a leadership opportunity.”Sophia Brock

EnrolmentHow do I enrol?

On the first day of school everyone was very welcoming and inclusive. The pre tours helped us know our way around so we didn’t get lost. We were well prepared as we had already met our teachers at the end of last year, and they told us what we needed to bring on the first day at MMI. The teachers were very helpful and kind. We love that our teachers have a sense of humour!

Evita Cameron and Aisha Fawcett, Rooms 10 and12

At MMI there are a lot of opportunities for everyone to do what they’re passionate about. The teachers are nice and welcoming as well as the year 8s. They make learning fun and make you go out of your comfort zone at camp, but that’s ok because in the end it’s really fun. To sum this up, I love MMI and I will treasure all my memories here.
