This morning we had six Surrey fire fighters talk to our students about bullying and the importance of “speaking out” when someone sees or hears something that is hurtful to others. The fire fighters’ message was well received at our assembly: bullying can occur everywhere, including the work place for adults. When we see bullying behaviour, it is important as bystanders to “say something” or to “tell someone”. Please help us share this message with your children. By saying or doing nothing, we encourage bully-like behaviour. This message – See Something Say Something! – is also on your child’s pink wrist band. All students received a wrist band today. As principal, I am proud of our students and staff; we work hard as a community to care for each other. We are not perfect. We make mistakes. But together our school community makes Mountainview a safe place for everyone to learn and work and grow. Finally, during our recent Multicultural Day, we had more than 30 countries represented at the luncheon. It was a memorable time and again we thank everyone for participating and sharing your culture and food! Enjoy and safe journeys! The school thanks the students of Division 5 for taking a leadership role in getting our blog up and running. Kudos Division 5!     Principal’s Message

Today is “Pink Day” at Mountainview Montessori, and also throughout British Columbia.

Mr Morrison

Basketball season is almost over. Kudos to our Grade 7 basektball team as they recently won the first place blue ribbon at Tuesday’s playday! Thank you to coaches Ms. Amsing, Mr. Stumpf, Ms. Murphy and Mr. Moxness for taking additional time to coach our students with this popular game. Other extra-curricular activities underway at our school include: the chess club with Mr. Milsted; Grade 7 drama classes with Ms. Neidig and Mr. Stumpf; intermediate dance with Ms. Radomski; badminton for grades 6 & 7 with Mr. Morrison; and after-school tutoring with Mr. Moxness.

Thank you to drivers who observe the speed limit, pick-up and drop-

off signs in the north parking lot. With our recent blast of winter, we appreciate the extra caution shown by all, especially towards pedestrians. For the south side of the school, please note that Surrey by-law officers have been contacted by some of our residential neighbours. The school office has received some complaints about of blocked driveways as well as students being dropped off or picked up in unsafe, marked zones. All signs and cones – whether from the city or school – are there in the interests of student safety.

Lately with the cold weather, and because so many of our students are

driven to school, it can be more challenging in the morning for parents to have their children arrive on time. We recognize that sometimes weather slows us all down. Please note that that on a few days every year (like last Monday) we did not mark late those students who arrived up to and before 9:00 a.m. We want students to arrive safe, first and foremost.

Some homes recently received letters outlining school concerns about

chronic student tardiness and absenteeism. These letters were provided to remind the homes of the importance of starting classes on-time. It can be challenging for get students caught up when they are late. Research shows that there is a strong correlation between student achievement and student attendance.

Our school is on the nutritional snack program with the Surrey Fire

Fighters. We have received supplies of nutritional snacks for those students who occasionally come to school without a snack or lunch. This does not occur often. However, we are grateful to be included in this program. The fire department helps collect and deliver snacks to approximately 60 Surrey schools.

Our school recently received a “Tech4Learning” grant of

approximately $16 000. This money will be used to continue to upgrade and maintain our technology resources for student learning.

Please read the PAC newsletter. There is a special donation request

for the silent auction at our upcoming annual school carnival on May 23. The silent auction is one way you, our parents and guardians, help support student learning at our school. We are grateful for any consideration!
