Tim Richardson: Chairman’s Welcome

Hello to you all for our last home match of the season, against our visitors Plymstock United from the other side of Plymouth. Always a difficult side to beat, they have had their best season for over ten years, finishing 3rd on this occasion. The First team have one match left after today, next Saturday at Vospers Oak Villa, who were relegated on Saturday as they now cannot catch up with second-bottom Penzance. Vospers suffered in 2015 from the sudden departure of the management team and half their first-team squad after finishing runners-up (sounds familiar?), and in their case they never fully recovered.. Since our last home match against Dobwalls ten days ago, which we lost 2-1 in a game which yet again could have gone either way (see match report on page 11), we went to sunny Bude Town on Saturday and came way with an impressive 3-0 win against all the odds - only 11 players available, no substitutes, two injuries during the match, a heroic team performance, a first win for three calendar months, and a clean sheet! After all the massive problems since Christmas - none of their own making - Steve and the lads fully deserved this and they made us feel very proud (match report is on page 7). The biggest victims of the January upheaval have been the Reserves. With more than half a dozen regular first-teamers either leaving in January or unwilling to turn out, the gaps had to be filled by players from the Reserves, leaving Harry’s side short of numbers and experience at Trelawny League level. As a result - and despite their best efforts - the Reserves are now on the brink of relegation, having found the run-in just too much. They’ll be safe only if Penryn crash in their last four games, or something happens at the AGM - both probably unlikely. So, spare a thought for the Reserves - but I’ve got no doubt they've got the character to bounce back next season (see page 13). The Women’s team came up against St Agnes away last Sunday and although losing 6-3 gave the prospective champions plenty to think about (see report on page 22). Dawn and Leanne’s team have one fixture left, which is scheduled for Sunday 14th May at home against Penryn - however, the pitch work here will have started by then, so plans are afoot to re-arrange the venue. The match itself is important in that it could decide fourth and fifth place in the league. Thanks again to Sean Perrott for his final instalment for this season of the history of Mousehole AFC on page 10, with an account of Paul v Mousehole in Paul Feast Week 1924. It was good to see Groundsman Mike Prisk out and about on his crutches after his recent knee operation. We all wish you a speedy and comfortable recovery, Mike! During the off-season, we’ll be posting regular news updates on the club website, Facebook and Twitter, plus in The Cornishman newspaper, covering information about anything happening both on the playing and non-playing side. Don’t forget to book for the club awards and social evening at Cornish Pirates on Friday 12th May - everyone welcome. Let’s all see off this season in true Seagull style! Finally, may I offer sincere thanks to all those people who give their time generously to help run the club. A huge number of hours of voluntary time are needed in total on a wide range of tasks, some of them visible, others ‘behind the scenes’ - but look what a success this collective effort makes of the club! If you or anyone you know can help out in any way, please talk to me!

Cheers, Tim

The Boss’s Blog: Player-Manager Steve Parker-Billinge

Well we are nearly at the end of this year’s journey and what a journey it has

been! We started the season with high hopes of defending our two trophies,

but things changed early on after a couple of heavy defeats. Christmas then

came and went, along with half of our side, rendering me in this position. The

first few months as manager have been testing. Scraping 11 players together

has at times been difficult and a massive thank you is owed to Harry for his

support and help on Friday nights and even Saturday mornings, to send the

odd player as and when needed. The group of lads that have stepped up from

the Reserves are getting better and better, the more games they get under

their belt at this level, as well as the strong core of senior players around

whom we’ve been able to re-build the side.

I am certainly looking forward to starting pre-season and then a full season in charge and the challenges this will bring. The aim is to get promotion to the Prem, so there will be a few new faces….. and maybe a

couple of old ones too!

All in all moving forward the club is going in the right direction. The pitch work will start this week, so this will be the last game at home until around October time. There is a more professional feel around the place

behind the scenes and hopefully you will see that carry on to the pitch going into next season.

The past couple of games have again been hit and miss, mainly due to the amount of injuries and people playing on injuries! In the Dobwalls game, we came out of the blocks quickly (something we had been struggling to do) and definitely had the better of the game in the first 15 minutes. We conceded a sloppy first goal and our shape all went a little to pot, and we were lucky to go into HT only trailing by 1. After a few choice words in the changing room, we came out strongly in the second half and had the better of the chances. We won a penalty, which Lewis scored and seemed to want to press on and go and win the game. Than two refereeing decisions changed the outcome. The first with 25 minutes left, Lewis through on goal 1 on 1 got scythed down by the last man trying to recover. The referee seemed to be the only per-son not to think it was a red card. The second was a free kick given to Dobwalls 20 yards out for a handball

which never was. Our wall split in two, the ball went through the gap and into the untended side of our goal.

Two days ago, we went on one of our furthest journeys of the season to Bude on a bank holiday weekend with just 11 players, two of them still struggling with injuries - and we finished up with more injuries by the end of the game. We had a great journey there, full of camaraderie. Ten minutes into the game Jonno’s groin went again - however without any subs, he stayed on, did what he could through the game and kept things very simple. So simple in fact that in one of our first attacks, a long ball found Kev, who put Jonno straight through to put us 1-0 up. We continued to dominate the game, our shape was as it should be, even with people playing slightly out of position. Half-time was a positive one, but with a word of caution, in that leading scorer from last season Billy Hopcroft was always dangerous. Our play continued to be positive going forward which led to another two second half goals, which were thoroughly deserved. The first win in

a while, a great atmosphere and one that I want us all to get used to.

In my last blog of the season, I would like to say a huge thank you to all the players and staff at the club, and especially all the people who come and cheer us on each week. The support you have all shown has

been fantastic and really helped bring the club together. Thank you so much!!!

Cheers, SPB

MOUSEHOLE FIRST TEAM: LAST MATCH

BUDE TOWN 0-3 MOUSEHOLE / SATURDAY 29TH APRIL 2017 / BROADCLOSE PARK / SOUTH WEST PENSINSULA LEAGUE, WEST DIVISION

After three long months without a win - the last one being the 4-1 home league defeat of Holsworthy on 28th January - Mousehole recorded a welcome victory to move back up to 6th place in the West Division at the head of a congested mid-table group of eight teams. And the win, which also saw the first ’clean sheet’ since the 0-0 draw with Penryn Athletic in January, was achieved in difficult circumstances, with only 11 players available on the day and further injuries sustained during the match.

Mousehole made the long journey without Lewis Caspall, Josh Otto, Connor Davey, Nathan Goodspeed, Tyler Tonkin and Matt McIlroy, and took time to settle on a bumpy pitch in bright sunshine. Luke Johnson picked up an injury after 15 minutes, Steve Parker-Billinge was forced into a diving save, ace marksman Billy Hopcroft was prominent but off-target in attack, and the hosts also hit the bar from a one-on-one position. So it came as a surprise when The Seagulls took the lead in the 39th minute, as Kevin Lawrence played a superb reverse pass through to Luke Johnson, who despite his injury took the ball in his stride and slid it past the oncoming ‘keeper.

SPB kept his side ahead with another fine diving save just before half-time, and in the opening period of the second half some heroic defending frustrated the home side, whose recent results have seen them push clear of the second relegation place.

Mousehole were beginning to win the individual battles and controlled the last 25 minutes, playing some of their best football for a while, despite having defender Luke Nowell limping after a heavy tackle and with no substitutes to call on. On 66 minutes Luke Johnson came very close to a second goal with a volley after a series of inviting right-sided corners by Kevin Lawrence, and it was the lively midfielder whose brilliant darting run and astute lay-off set up Jamie Simons on the edge of the box for a right-footed drive high into the net 13 minutes from time.

In the last ten minutes Jason Simmonds came close to a third with the ’keeper saving his drive at the expense of a corner, Ashley Smeeth hit the crossbar with a header and then Jason Simmonds picked the pocket of a home defender to put himself in the clear and he calmly slotted home for 3-0 and a first goal for the re-built team.

The team deservedly celebrated at the final whistle, and both result and performance will have lifted the spirits after 16 league games in which they have lost 7 and drawn 7, picking up only 13 points from the 48 on offer.

Mousehole: Steve Parker-Billinge, Jamie Robinson, Luke Nowell, Billy Curtis (captain), Caleb Marsden, Jason Simmonds, Joe Davies, Ashley Smeeth, Luke Johnson, Kevin Lawrence, Jamie Simons. Substitutes: None

Scorers: Luke Johnson (39), Jamie Simons (77), Jason Simmonds (90)

THE HISTORY OF MOUSEHOLE AFC PART 14

In Part 13 , Mousehole beat Long Rock away in the Cornwall Junior Cup in September 1924

By Sean Perrott

from his research at Morrab Library,

Mousehole & Newlyn Archives, and elsewhere

Following the triumphant Cup win and EDGAR WALLIS’s coming-of-age at Long Rock, Mousehole drew 1-1 at home to Penzance Y.M.C.A., a friendly game played in pouring rain and before a small gate. The weather must have been bad as a wrestling tournament at Hayle was postponed on the same day.

Hayle’s football team were the visitors on Paul Feast Saturday, 11th October, 1924 “The local football teams secured good fixtures: Mousehole Chiefs engaging Hayle Chiefs, and securing a fine victory over the visitors by 6 goals to nil. Paul Chiefs were contested by Botallack, the home team being victors by 2 to 1.”

As for Paul Feast itself: “Monday was the day of jollity, opening with intermittent thunder peals and a heavy shower, the elements gradually became finer. The Western Foxhounds met at Paul just before 10.00 a.m. The hare coursing club met at Chyenall Moor. Hundreds of juveniles attended the children’s fair on the green, where music was discoursed by the Paul brass band, under Bandmaster Sam Thomas. In all places of worship special services were held and well attended.”

Meanwhile, on a field behind the King’s Arms: “A large number of sportsmen attended the local “Derby” on the Paul ground in connection with Feast Monday festivities. It was one of the best matches witnessed on the ground for a long time. Paul were the smarter combination, particularly in the first half, when their forwards showed the best form, and on the day’s play were very unlucky not to have won.

From the kick-off, the play was fast and exciting. The home forwards seemed to control the ball better than their opponents, and their passing was more accurate. Paul were giving the Mousehole defence a gruelling time, and came within inches of scoring on numerous occasions. Mousehole were penalized for a handling infringement, and Rowe scored with a terrific drive, which gave the goalie no chance (1-0). Just after this, Richards missed a glorious opportunity to increase the lead and had only the goalie to beat, but his shot unfortunately went wide.

Half-time – Paul 1, Mousehole 0.

Mousehole played with renewed energy on the resumption, but the home defence rose gallantly to the occasion and frustrated every effort to get through. Mousehole were awarded a free just outside the penalty area, but JELBERT shot well over the bar. From a corner awarded, the Mousehole left-wing placed the ball nicely in the centre, and on its being headed out, ROBERTS caught the leather a “first timer” and brought the scores level. (1-1).

The crowd were now worked up to a high pitch of excitement, both goals having narrow escapes, and the whistle blew with honours even.

Rich, Drew, S. Jelbert and G. Richards were the pick of the home team, while JELBERT, JACKA and ALLAN, played well for Mousehole. Mr L North gave every satisfaction as referee.

Result – Paul 1, Mousehole 1.”

MOUSEHOLE FIRST TEAM TEN DAYS AGO MOUSEHOLE 1-2 DOBWALLS / SATURDAY 22ND APRIL 2017 /

SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE, DIVISION 1 WEST / AT TRUNGLE PARC

The Seagulls put on a much more determined display than in the trouncing at St Dennis on Easter Monday, and would have deservedly won their first match in 13 attempts, had they not conceded two avoidable goals.

Mousehole fielded a much-changed side from the one that fell to two defeats over the Easter weekend, with Matt McIlroy serving the first of his two-match suspension after his sending off in the 2-2 draw at Dobwalls two weeks pre-viously, Luke Nowell and Jason Simmonds helping out the Reserves in their relegation fight, and Lee Robinson injured in the warm-up. But they wel-comed back fit-again Josh Otto and had Tyler Tonkin and Ashley Smeeth re-turn to the staring line-up with Jamie Simons the solitary substitute.

Both sides had early chances before the visitors were gifted the opening goal when a misplaced pass out from the back was lobbed back into the unattended goal from 30 yards by Sam Stockman. More goals looked likely at both ends, with both sides struggling to impose themselves, but Mousehole came close on 37 when Lewis Caspall’s 25-yard shot was pushed out for a corner at full stretch by deputising goalkeeper Ryan Holland.

Mousehole began to assert themselves in the second half, with Dobwalls content to sit back and play long balls forward for the dangerous pairing of Stockman and top scorer Ryan Oxley. Luke Johnson and Nathan Goodspeed both had chances which went over before a clever move between Lewis Caspall and substitute Jamie Simons saw the ball creep tantalisingly just past the far post, and Simons shortly afterwards headed over at the far post.

Referee Oliver Ingall became the focus of attention in the last period of the match, as both sides disputed some key decisions. On 68 minutes Lewis Caspall was tripped on the edge of the area when clean through on goal by ‘last man’ Adam Solomon, only for the defender to escape with a yellow card rather than the expected red. Then, after a period of sustained pressure, Mousehole were awarded a penalty on 77 minutes when the referee ruled that Jamie Simons’ cross had been blocked by Solomon with his hand, and after the inevitable arguments Caspall took advantage of the decision with a low drive for the equaliser. Just as The Seagulls were increasing the mo-mentum in search of a winner, it was Dobwalls this time who profited from another contentious ‘hand ball’ decision in the 84th minute with a free kick from 20 yards from which Stockman scored with a shot that the defensive wall failed to block. Mousehole tried their hardest to get the equaliser their second-half performance merited but Dobwalls were also lively on the break and missed a couple of chances of their own in the closing minutes.

MOUSEHOLE RESERVES

CURRENT TRELAWNY LEAGUE TABLE, Sponsored by Whirlwind Sports Premier Division

Updated 30th April

*includes points adjustment • Mousehole Reserves picked up 1 point from their last three matches

• They ended their fixtures with two games against teams aiming for promotion, albeit at home, but lost both: 2-3 to Wendron last Wednesday and 0-3 to Camborne School of Mines on Saturday.

• These results benefitted Troon, who could otherwise have been overtaken but have now escaped from the second relegation spot.

• The Seagulls can now escape only if Penryn Athletic fail to pick up any points from their remaining four fixtures, or if they draw one of these and lose the other three by a combined goal difference of minus-15.

• Points adjustments: - Mousehole were docked points by the League for withdrawing from an away fixture at St Day in January because they could not raise a team. (But shortly afterwards, the pitch was declared unfit after rain!) - Mousehole were also awarded points from their 4-4 draw at Chacewater in September, as the home side fielded an ineligible player - Together, these two adjustments explain why 5 wins and 6 draws adds up to 20 points!

MOUSEHOLE WOMEN’S LAST MATCH ST AGNES LADIES 6-3 MOUSEHOLE WOMEN / CORNWALL WOMEN’S LEAGUE / SUNDAY 23RD APRIL / AT ENYS PARC

Mousehole finished their away fixtures at prospective champions St Agnes, losing by an

emphatic-looking scoreline that did not do justice to a determined team performance.

In an entertaining game Mousehole appeared to take the lead but the goal was ruled out

for offside and this set the pattern for much of the match with The Seagulls constantly

being flagged for offside, with many of the calls controversial.

St Agnes took the lead when a hopeful shot was spilled by Lyndsey Mayers and rolled into

the net, much to her annoyance, especially as she had saved brilliantly on numerous

occasions in the first half.

It was by no means one-way traffic and with a little more composure and better finishing

Mousehole could have troubled the St Agnes keeper more.

Mousehole kicked off the second half and stunned St Agnes by scoring straight away. The

ball was laid back to Sophie Wilson whose pinpoint pass found Katy Barker on the edge of

the area, and with a great first touch she went forward and fired inside the far post.

However, St Agnes were to score three more goals before Mousehole got back into the

game and looked as though they might achieve another comeback like at Helston.

A ball over the top beat the St Agnes offside game as Sophie Wilson ran from deep to slot

home and Jo Barker got onto the score sheet again beating the off side and running in

from the right to score at the near post to make it 4-3.

Unfortunately, by trying to get on level terms Mousehole were caught out by two more

goals to complete the scoring.

The Seagulls have now come very close in two matches against the best team in the

league, the home match at Trungle Parc on 2nd April having ended in an unlucky 2-1

defeat with a goal on 90+4 minutes.

Mousehole’s consolation is that their five defeats this season have all been against the

top three sides. They remain in 4th place, 7 points ahead of Penryn Ladies who have 3

games in hand, with the two teams facing each other in the last game of the season on

14th May (venue to be decided as pitch work at Trungle Parc will have started by then).

St Agnes now have one hand on the championship trophy, being 6 points ahead of Bude

Town with two games left to play and an 18-goal better goal difference, but with a crucial

Bude v St Agnes clash on 7th May.

Mousehole Women: Lyndsey Mayers, Flo Davies Kirsop, Tamara de Silva, Lyndsey Wil-

liams (captain), Megan Davison, Lena Mannon, Carly Jacka, Sophie Wilson, Claire Hitch-

ens Todd, Katy Barker, Jo Barker.

Substitutes (used): Scarlett Clouter, Stacey George.

Mousehole scorers: Katy Barker, Sophie Wilson, Jo Barker.

NOTES ABOUT PLYMSTOCK UNITED

Plymstock United Football Club was formed in 1946, when Plymstock was little more than a village. They gained election to the old Plymouth Combination League playing in the now long-defunct Division One (East), a division made up of mostly village sides from around the area. The club’s chosen colours were red and white, and the new team took the pitch for the first time in an Arsenal design of jersey.

According to Richard Rundle’s Football Club History Database (fchd.com), the club were founder members of the Devon County League in 1992/93, finishing second in both 2004/05 and 2005/06. In 2007/08 they joined the newly-formed South West Peninsula League, Division 1 East, and were runners-up in the first season.

Since then, because of the SWPL’s need to equalise the number of clubs in the East and West Divisions, they have switched between the East and West three times, spending four years in the West from 2008/09 to 2011/12 with a highest 7th place achieved twice, then three years back in the East with two 14th place finishes, followed by a return to the West last season where they came 5th.

This season they are already guaranteed third place, confirmed with a 1-0 win at Porthleven on Saturday and with it a useful £500 in prize money.

Today is Plymstock’s last game of a very good season. They opened the campaign with a five wins and a draw, the sequence including a 7-1 win away on Plymouth Marjon’s plastic surface, with Joe Jasper scoring six. Two of their best results were a 0-0 draw at home against Sticker in mid-January, a result that halted a long winning run by the eventual champions, and a 2-2 draw at runners-up Elburton Villa.

They are currently on a 3-match winning run, with home victories over Penzance (4-2) and St Dennis (3-2) and that 1-0 away win at Porthleven.

After losing 6-3 at Bude Town on 12th November, Plymstock beat Mousehole 3-2 at their Deans Cross HQ on a rainy day a week later. The game was notable for the lowest recorded attendance (12, with 8 of those coming from Mousehole) for any match in this season’s West Division. And sendings-off for Frazer Cadman and Wayne Quinn in the last quarter of the match, without which The Seagulls might have grabbed a draw after starting to make a comeback from 3-1 down.

That was the start of a three-month 10-match unbeaten run which has helped Plymstock secure a top-three finish.

Plymstock are third-bottom of the West Division disciplinary table. They have the same number of red cards (5) as Mousehole, but 51 yellows compared with 31.
