MOUSEHOLE RESERVES’ MATCH REPORTS - TRELAWNY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
MOUSEHOLE RESERVES 1-2 CHACEWATER, SATURDAY 18TH FEBRUARY
In a very hard-fought game, Mousehole’s team spirit was much in evidence but was not quite enough as
they looked to climb away from the bottom four against their mid-table opponents.
Four players were missing from the previous week’s winning line-up, but the team welcomed Fynn Scott who had dusted off his boots to come and play, Theo Carter-Webber who recently moved to the area
from London, and assistant manager Mark Trevail who played his first game for a year.
The visitors took the lead in the first ten minutes with a half-volley into the top corner following a ball over the top of the defence, but two minutes later Lee Robinson equalised for The Seagulls picking up a throw
-in and sending a well struck half-volley into bottom right of the goal.
Fynn Scott playing as a lone striker had one-on-one chances to put Mousehole in the lead but was
thwarted by the keeper’s saves, and the score remained 1-1 at half time.
Chacewater regained the lead after 60 minutes when a ball into the box was chested home, but the hosts had a great chance to even up the score when Tom Hooper’s whipped-in cross on 80 minutes found
Jamie Thomas six yards out but his free header went over the bar.
Mousehole: Adam Robathan, Dickie Taylor, Mark Trevail, Harry Tonkin, Tom Hooper (captain), Jak Hughes, Lee Robinson, Theo Carter-Webber, Ross Bryant, Jamie Thomas, Fynn Scott. Substi-
tutes: Jamie Woolcock (for Jak Hughes, 80), Tom George. Mousehole scorer: Lee Robinson (12)
MOUSEHOLE RESERVES 3-0 ST KEVERNE, SATURDAY 11TH FEBRUARY
Mousehole Reserves came into the match in last-but-one place in the league table but knew that a win would enable them to climb above their visitors two places above and provide a welcome boost to player-manager Harry Tonkin’s re-built side after a month in which half the players have been successfully pro-
moted into the first team squad.
It was a good afternoon all round with a dominant 3-0 victory, the fourth consecutive match in which the team has scored three goals (the last three being 3-3 draws), their first win in seven games stretching
back to 12th November, and their first clean sheet since the 5-0 home win over St Buryan on 31st August.
The 2-0 half-time lead could have been many more as The Seagulls pressed the visitors from the start. Jamie Thomas got the first goal from close range on 9 minutes after right back Will Trenoweth
found Tyler Lea whose through ball put Anthony Nicholas in for a left-foot shot half-saved by the ‘keeper.
On 15 minutes goalkeeper Adam Robathan’s massive kick downfield was allowed to bounce by the visitors’ defence just outside their box and Jamie Thomas was there again to lift the ball over the
‘keeper’s head for his second.
After an indifferent opening period in the second half, Mousehole went 3-0 up in the 60th minute. Will Trenoweth launched a throw-in near the corner flag, Jamie Thomas took a great first touch and his
superb early cross was headed by the alert Tyler Lea into the top corner of the net from 8 yards.
Other notable moments came when Trenoweth’s excellent run down the right wing led to an inviting cross in front of goal where the ‘keeper saved from Ross Bryant at point-blank range. Substitute James Franklin rattled the cross bar in the 80th minute, and in the 90th another substitute Tom George couldn’t
get a proper connection on Tyler Lea’s cross when a fourth goal looked certain.
The team: Adam Robathan, Dickie Taylor, Matthew Williams, Harry Tonkin, Will Trenoweth, Lee Robin-
son, Tom Hooper (captain), Ross Bryant, Jamie Thomas, Tyler Lea, Anthony Nicholas
Substitutes: James Franklin (for Tom Hooper, 60), Jak Hughes (for Jamie Thomas, 70), Ryan Ellis (for
Anthony Nicholas, 80), Tom George (for Ross Bryant, 80). Scorers: Jamie Thomas (9,15), Tyler Lea (60)

Tim Richardson: Chairman’s Welcome
Hello and welcome to everyone at Trungle Parc this afternoon for the delayed Charity Cup quarter-final game against Wendron United. This tie was supposed to be played on 4th February but prolonged heavy rain in the 36 hours beforehand left the pitch unplayable.
You’ll find information about the Charity Cup on page 25.
Today, to coincide with our continuing defence of the trophy we won last May, our resident researcher and historian Sean Perrott has come up with an interesting piece he’s discov-ered about Mousehole AFC’s first piece of ‘charity cup’ silverware way back in 1926 (page 14). We’ll resume the normal sequence of Sean’s ‘History of Mousehole AFC’ with Part 10 next week in the programme for the match against Liskeard Athletic.
Last Saturday, the First team battled to get a 1-1 result here against Porthleven and on the balance of play and chances will possibly be more relieved than disappointed with the draw (match report on page 7). The very best of luck to Steve and the team today!
The Reserves had a setback at St Keverne who are also near the bottom of the league (match report on 15, previous matches on page 35). Let’s hope for three points for Harry’s team at basement side Threemilestone today.
The Women’s Team’s match against Penryn at Trungle Parc last Sunday was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. Tomorrow (Sunday 12th) they face an interesting challenge with a semi-final tie in the Cornwall Women’s Cup away at Newquay Celtic, who are in the South West League West Division, which is the next league up. If you can, get up there to give Dawn and Leanne’s team your vocal support - you might find lifts available if you ask around.
Next Saturday, the First team take on bottom-six Liskeard Athletic here at Trungle Parc (3pm), looking to complete a league double having won 1-0 at Lux Park in August, while the Reserves have no fixture on that day. On Sunday (19th) the Women’s team are away at third-bottom St Teath looking to turn their 99 league goals into a ton.
Apologies, but there were a couple of omissions and errors in last week’s fixtures list on page 02 - it’s now updated and correct.
On the afternoon of Tuesday 21st March (in 10 days’ time) we are pleased to be hosting at Trungle Parc a schools’ football event for under-11s. The afternoon will start with a series of ‘friendlies’ between local schools, and at 4pm the final of the Cornwall Schools’ FA Centenary Shield will take place between Sennen and St Buryan Primary Schools. Free admission and clubhouse open all afternoon for refreshments.
Cheers, Tim

The Boss’s Blog: Player-Manager Steve Parker-Billinge
Today we welcome a break in the league, for a Charity Cup quarter-final game against Wendron United, a cup that we won last year, albeit with a completely different squad.
We have seen over the past couple of seasons that Wendron are a difficult side to beat, but there will at least be no draw today.
This should be a good battle between two sides that like to play football on the floor, and after last week’s windy conditions, playing football on the floor will be welcome.
I was disappointed walking off the pitch with only a point against visitors Porthleven on Saturday, but on reflection a draw was probably a fair result in difficult conditions.
Both teams had chances to win the game, but it's that last little bit of precision that is sometimes lacking at this level - and that can make all the difference. Just look at last season - although we scored a record number of goals, we still missed an abundance of chances each week.
Last week’s squad saw the inclusion of new signing Tyler Tonkin, who, once settled into the game, started to control things in the middle of the park. Tyler is a promising talent and one I look forward to working with this year.
Last week also saw the inclusion of Calron Hall and Bradley Wills, who added some strength and experience into the side, which we have lacked a little recently.
This week sees a nearly full squad who are all ambitious to play in a semi-final at a neutral ground, so hopefully this will show in the performance.
Thanks for your great support, and hope to see you all after the match.
Steve

WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT REFEREES - 20 QUOTES FROM MANAGERS, PLAYERS & COMMENTATORS
taken from “Over The Moon” & “Pulled Off At Half Time”, published by Sevenoaks
“He’s the sort of referee who gets up in the morning, looks in the mirror and wonders how the other seven wonders of the world are”
“They probably just wanted the referee to blow up at that point” “Yes it was outside the box, but the ref should have given a penalty” “My dad refereed me as a kid. I remember him booking me, and asking my name” “You only have to fart in the box these days to concede a penalty” “The only thing consistent about that referee is his inconsistency” “The penalty, I have to choose my words very carefully, was an absolute disgrace” “They call themselves professional. They’re not. Professional means good” “Referees need eyes in the back of their heads which they haven’t got” “If the referee didn’t want us to win, he should have said so from the start” “The referee said the player was always complaining and protesting - it
reminded him of his kids” “I’m not being critical, but we had a referee who in my opinion wasn’t up to the
required standard” “Player: “You’re a terrible ref!” Referee: “That’s why they only let me ref
terrible teams” “I never comment on referees, so I’m not going to break the habit of a lifetime
by commenting on that prat”
“The trouble with today’s referees is that they know the rules, but they do not know the game”
“The referee had a brand new yellow card and wanted to see if it worked” “The referee not only showed him a red card, but also sent him off” “After that decision, they made a meal around the referee” “The drug testers should have gone to see those officials instead of the players” “He made three offside decisions, two of them right, two of them wrong”

MOUSEHOLE 1-1 PORTHLEVEN
SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE, DIVISION 1 WEST
SATURDAY 4TH MARCH 2017 AT TRUNGLE PARC
The first home game for six weeks saw Mousehole gain a draw in a wind-affected contest with Porthleven,
in front of a good-size ‘local derby’ crowd.
The Seagulls fielded a changed line-up, with the experienced Calron Hall appearing for only the third time this season, new signing ex-Penzance youngster Tyler Tonkin making his debut in midfield, and an unusually strong four-man bench of Bradley Wills, Luke Johnson, Josh Otto and Joe Davies. Three of the players promoted successfully in recent weeks were missing, with Luke Nowell unavailable, and Nathan
Goodspeed and Jason Simmonds dropping back to boost the depleted Reserves’ squad.
Mid-table Porthleven have re-shaped their squad, with an average age of 19, as well as their playing style, and showing great composure in possession might feel aggrieved to have left Trungle Parc with only a draw as they created the better chances throughout. Mousehole in turn will claim a justified point on the
basis of their own huge effort and commitment.
Both sides were guilty of over-hit and misplaced passes as they tried to come to terms with the strong wind blowing diagonally across the pitch. The visitors had the wind in their favour in a first half in which they hit the post, forced goalkeeper Steve Parker-Billinge into three outstanding saves, and found captain Billy
Curtis in impressive form at the back.
It was little surprise when Porthleven took the lead on 33 minutes when Kyle Marks’ clever footwork just
inside the area drew a foul by Matthew Howes and Marks confidently put the penalty away into the corner.
Mousehole unexpectedly equalised three minutes later when Lewis Caspall got goal-side of his marker
after a long pass forward and stabbed the ball past ‘keeper Ethan Fearn for his 8th goal of the season.
The second half was scrappy, with the hosts often too hasty in getting the ball forward and the visitors wasteful after some good approach play. The Seagulls, with substitutes Luke Johnson and Bradley Wills on the field in the last 25 minutes to partner Lewis Caspall in advanced positions, began to look more
menacing, and Fearn kept out a goalbound angled drive by Luke Johnson with his legs at his near post.
But Port, in search of a league ‘double’ after their 3-2 home victory in September, came close to winning the game in the last few minutes. Calron Hall picked up a yellow card for a ‘last-man’ foul, Steve Parker-Billinge clawed the ball off the goal line after a left-sided break, and in the last action of the match a low
cross flew dangerously across the home goal.
Mousehole: Steve Parker-Billinge, Jamie Robinson, Matthew Howes, Billy Curtis (captain), Calron Hall,
Connor Davey, Tyler Tonkin, Lee Robinson, Kevin Lawrence, Lewis Caspall, Caleb Marsden.
Substitutes: Bradley Wills (for Caleb Marsden, 54), Luke Johnson (for Jamie Robinson, 66), Josh Otto,
Joe Davies.
Scorers: Mousehole – Lewis Caspall (36), Porthleven – Kyle Marks (33, pen)

THE CORNWALL CHARITY CUP aka The Durning-Lawrence Cup
The Charity Cup began when Sir Edwin Durning-Lawrence (b 1837, d 1914), MP for Truro 1895 to 1906, presented a cup to Truro AFC to be used for charitable purposes, and the cup was later handed to the Cornwall County Football Association to organise an annual competition for charity.
Each year Cornwall FA choose a charity to benefit from this competition - this year it’s FLEET, Frontline Emergency Equipment Trust (website: fleet.org.uk).
FLEET is a registered charity formed by Cornish Ambulance Staff in 1990 with the aim of upgrading and standardising the equipment carried on all of Cornwall’s Ambulances.
With generous help from the Cornish people, businesses and organisations, FLEET has raised over £1million since 1990, all of which has been put into providing vital equipment that helps save lives across the county.
Recently, FLEET donated a defibrillator to Cornwall FA for use at its Cup Competitions and has also installed defibrillators at St Blazey and Wadebridge Football Clubs. This was made possible from donations and sponsorship received when FLEET members took part in the London Marathon.

ST KEVERNE 3-1 MOUSEHOLE RESERVES
TRELAWNY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
SATURDAY 4TH MARCH 2017
Reserves lose to rivals in relegation encounter
Mousehole Reserves lost this battle of two relegation-threatened teams, conceding two late goals which put the hosts six points ahead in the league table and left The Seagulls in last-but-one place.
The match was played in strong winds and on a very soft pitch, with little quality football on display from either side.
Harry Tonkin’s’ side was boosted by the appearance of Nathan Goodspeed and JJ Simmonds who dropped down to help out the depleted squad after two successful months in the First team.
And it was JJ who put Mousehole into the lead with a 25-yard left-foot chip over the goalkeeper and four covering defenders after Nathan Goodspeed’s ball over the top had released 16-year old Billy Edwards one-on-one for a shot parried by the keeper.
The hosts equalised on 25 minutes with a neat finish after stealing possession on the left.
St Keverne, beaten 3-0 at Trungle Parc three weeks previously, claimed all three valuable points with two quick goals in the last few minutes.
Mousehole now have six games remaining – three at home and three away - in which to gain the points to avoid finishing in the bottom two.
Today they are away at Threemilestone, who are rooted in last place, 19 points behind with 9 games left to play.
Then on 25th March, they have a proverbial ‘six-pointer’ at home against Troon, who currently are three points ahead having played one game more and with a worse goal difference.
After that, it’s 4th place Wendron at home, 5th place Pendeen away, bottom-four Penryn away and finally 6th place Camborne School of Mines at home.
All Reserves’ results and fixtures are on page 27, and two more match reports are on page 35.
The team: Adam Robathan, Dickie Taylor, Matty Williams, Harry Tonkin, Will Trenoweth, Tom Hooper (captain), Nathan Goodspeed, Ben Chapman, Ross Bryant, Billy Edwards, Jason Simmonds.
Substitute: Tom George (for Matty Williams, 70)

NOTES ABOUT WENDRON UNITED
A relatively new club who celebrated their 30th anniversary last year, The Dron have had two spells in the South West Peninsula League West Division, the first being as founder members in 2007. They resigned from the League in the middle of their third season but after finishing runners-up five years later in the Cornwall Combination League in 2015/16 they qualified for promotion back to the SWPLD1W and finished in a creditable
mid-table in their first season (last year).
Last season in the league Mousehole beat Wendron United 1-0 early in the season at Trungle Parc, but were held to a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture at The Underlane later. This season, The Seagulls have already completed a League ‘double’ over today’s visitors, winning 3-0 at home in
August and 2-1 away in December.
Wendron’s league season so far has seen them gain 36 points from 27 games, with 11 wins, 3 draws, 13 defeats and a goal difference of minus-16. They currently sit 7th, one place and four
points behind Mousehole having played four games more.
They won four league games in a row in late August and early September, but lost all five in December. In the two matches against Wadebridge Town they achieved their highest scoring win (6-2, at home in September), but conceded their biggest defeat, 7-1, in the return fixture on
30th December..
Right now, they are on a fine run of form having won three of their last four matches, 2-1 at St Dennis, 2-1 at Vospers Oak Villa, and an impressive 3-2 at home against then second-place
Plymstock United, while the defeat was 4-2 at home against Dobwalls.
Of their remaining seven league fixtures, only two are against sides above them in the table, so
there is a good chance they will improve on last season’s final placing.
In the SWP League Cup they pulled off a major shock in the first round with a 2-1 home win over Premier Division Falmouth Town in front of a good crowd of 108, but lost at home to Sticker 3-0
in the second round.
The notable win over Falmouth Town was followed soon afterwards by the departure of
Wendron’s Manager Charlie Davies to become Assistant Manager of ……...Falmouth Town.
In the Cornwall Senior Cup Wendron were eliminated in the first round with a 5-3 home loss to
Premier Division Camelford.
The Dron reached today’s quarter-final stage of the Cornwall Charity Cup by winning 3-2 away at
Bude Town, while Mousehole won 2-1 away at Dobwalls with two goals from Jake Andrew.
Wendron’s home league attendances average 40, with a high of 85 for the local derby against Porthleven on Boxing Day, won 3-1 by the visitors. Mousehole’s corresponding figures are 76
average and 96 highest (v Elburton Villa in October).
Wendron have the fourth-best disciplinary record in the West Division, with 2 red cards (one at Mousehole in August) and 23 yellow. Mousehole are 8th with 4 reds (one also in the Wendron
match in August) and 25 yellows.
