Mr. Gifford’s 5th Grade Math
Lesson #7
Rounding Whole Numbers and Decimals.
Rounding replaces one number with another number that tells
ABOUT how many or how much.
When you round a number remember this: If the place
value you are rounding is a 0 – 4 the number stays the same.
Numbers 5 – 9 the number goes up.
Take this number467 and let’s round it to
the TENS place.
1st - Underline the place value you are rounding to. In this
case the TENS place.467
2nd- Ask the number, or NEIGHBOR, to the right if it can make the underlined digit GO UP or STAY THE SAME.
467
The seven makes the 6 GO UP!
3rd – Finally, make the 6 a 7 and ALL numbers to the right of the digit 6 become 0’s.
467
470
You do the exact same with decimals.
Let’s try another one. Round 25,401 to the
thousands place.
Ask the number, NEIGHBOR, to the right if it can make the thousands place go UP or
stays the SAME.25,401
The digit 4 makes the digit 5 stay the SAME. The rounded
number is now25,000
Let’s try one more before you practice.
Round 61.92
to the whole number or the ONES place.
Ask the number, NEIGHBOR, to the right if it can make the thousands place go UP or
stays the SAME.61.92

number is now62.00
