Rounding replaces one number with another number that tells

ABOUT how many or how much.

When you round a number remember this: If the place

value you are rounding is a 0 – 4 the number stays the same.

Numbers 5 – 9 the number goes up.

Take this number467 and let’s round it to

the TENS place.

1st - Underline the place value you are rounding to. In this

case the TENS place.467

2nd- Ask the number, or NEIGHBOR, to the right if it can make the underlined digit GO UP or STAY THE SAME.

The seven makes the 6 GO UP!

3rd – Finally, make the 6 a 7 and ALL numbers to the right of the digit 6 become 0’s.

Let’s try another one. Round 25,401 to the

thousands place.

Ask the number, NEIGHBOR, to the right if it can make the thousands place go UP or

stays the SAME.25,401

The digit 4 makes the digit 5 stay the SAME. The rounded
