The signatures are primarily of tax paying citizens of Oxford, Middlebury, Naugatuck, Southbury, Woodbury, Seymour, Beacon Falls, and beyond voicing their opposition to the power plant. Objections to the plant include, but are not limited to the following issues: • Risks to health, especially to children and the elderly, as 2.7 million tons per year of toxic pollutants spew from its two 150 ft smokestacks. These dangerous toxins are linked to respiratory and pulmonary problems, lung cancer, and heart disease. • The depletion of aquifers and serious water pollution; • Hazard to small planes at Oxford Airport; • Decreased property values; • Increased traffic on our roads; • Changes that have occurred in the region since 1999 such as the dramatic increase in population; • Connecticut’s 20/20 agreement to use 20% renewable energy by the year 2020. improving the environment by having clean natural gas online to replace coal burning plants. They say this will resultin lower organic compounds being released into theatmosphere.
