Hello Race Fans and Motorcycle Fanatics! I’d like to introduce myself and my family to everybody out there who lives or loves anything with wheels and an engine. My name is Jim Bull and pictured below you’ll see my lovely wife Deb, and our two awesome children Trevor and Jessica. We’re proud to announce we are the new publishers of Motorcycle Racing Action and we’re looking forward to getting to know all of you out there in motorcycle land.

We would like to thank Larry Hess and his staff for bringing life to this paper and for all the great action he’s been able to share with all of us over the past 6 years. You’ll see a lot of the same coverage that Larry has given you, but be on the look out for new features and columns all the time.

My First Race BikeHi my name is Trevor James Bull. I wrote this story because my dad thought it would be a good way to introduce ourselves as the new owners. I am ten years old and I am going to tell you how I felt and how I felt riding my first race bike, a KX 85. On February 15, 2002,I was at my grandmas house. My sister and I were playing in the yard when it was starting to get cold and dark. So we went inside and started watching T.V. I was getting tired when all of the sudden my parents were here to pick us up. I ran outside , and thats when I saw it, yes my new KX 85 was mounted on the trailer! I ran out said ‘’ HI ‘’ to my parents gave them a hug and jumped into the back of the trailer! My little sister Jess did the same thing as me and jumped into the back of the truck. She jumped into the back of the truck because she got a new AFX Motocross helmet!

After a while my grandma came out and saw it. She thought it looked danger-ous, but I thought it looked awesome!! My mom & dad thought it looked awe-some also. My little sister who is seven years old wanted to ride it. She even sat on it when it was on the trailer. On our way home I was looking at it the whole time. When we got home I put it into the garage. The next day we had to do some things in the morning , but after the Supercross race we loaded up the bikes and went riding.

Before I was going to ride my new KX 85 ,I wanted to warm up on my old XR 70 because I haven’t rode in a while. But the darn Honda wouldn’t start. We tried, and tried, and tried, and tried again but it wouldn’t start. So my dad started up the KX and buzzed around on it just to make sure everything worked right. He popped some wheelie’s, and they were awesome. I call him the ‘Wheelie King’. So my dad came over and said, “OK, now you ride it.” I had some butterflies in my stomach but I got on and started it up and pulled out. When my dad rode his first bike with a clutch, it took him 3 hours just to pull out. I did it on my first try. After a while my dad told me to jump the small jump where we ride. So I did. It felt like jumping on a cloud because I have so much suspension, and everyone knows when you jump an XR 70 you are going to land hard because you are on your way to “bottom out heaven”.

For 2002, both the KX125 and 250 have been further refined with changes to the engines to increase power and revised suspension to dial in the ride. HaRE sCRamblE March 3, 2002 was the date for Ft. of the Mountains first Hare Scramble of the year.It had rained for three days prior to the season opener in the hills of Central PA, but things shaped up very nicely with temperatures in the high 50's and a good crowd on hand. Ft. of the Mountain offers classes for Youth/Amateur/Senior/Pro/Quads & Women, they have 2 courses, their main loop is roughly 6.5 miles through the woods with plenty of challenges for every-

one, their youth track is approximately 3 miles long. They offer 100% payback for experts and award one trophy for every 3 riders per class. Eats are avail-able. Ft. of the Mountain is located right off exit 13 of the PA Turnpike, and is easily accessible for riders in District 6 and 7. Jordan pulled the Holeshot in both moto's plus a restart at Sleepy Hollows season opener in sub arctic weath-er last month. Jordan finished 1 - 2 respectively and took the overall win for the day. Using the power of his Moroney's H-D/Michael's H-D

Classics, Jared Mees closed out his Amateur career in the

short track portion of the 24th Annual Motorama with a pair

of Expert class wins, 250 A and 600 A. The event is run on

the dirt floor of the Pennsylvania State Farm Show Arena.

With the pounding of micro sprints and quads, in addition to

the big booming Rotaxes, the track tends to rut up. They did

get it fairly good by the time the evenings finals were run. At

least there weren't the leaping motorcycles like in the heats.

His wins were at opposite ends of the racing spectrum. In

repeating his win of last year in the 250, Mees jumped out in

front of Dillon Cava and Rich Mellinger and pulled away to a

fairly easy several length win. Behind him was another story!

Mellinger kept banging away

at Cava in the early going,

with Shawn Baer and Bryan

Douglas battling for fourth

spot a length or so behind.

Mellinger took second off the

second turn on the fifth lap,

with Cava returning the favor

in the same spot two laps

later. This time he held on to

claim second spot.

Luckily for Mees, there was

less than a full class of Open

Expert riders entered. He

fell in the second turn at the start of his heat,

and with his small stature, one of his 'friends' said he'd 'have

trouble bump starting a bicycle, much less his Rotax.'

Luckily for him, he started the final on the inside of the sec-

ond row, and was in third coming off the second turn at the

start, behind a pair of veteran riders, Rich Eisinger and Bob

Sweeten. As they started the third lap, Mees slipped inside

Sweeten for second. Dillon Cava got by Sweeten on the fol-

lowing lap. For several laps, Eisinger kept

the margin constant, but with about four

laps left, Mees started slicing the margin,

taking the lead as they came off the fourth

turn to take the two laps to go sign. Once

in front, he quickly added to his margin.

Joining Mees as a double winner was

"The Master of Motorama", Georgie Price,

who kept his win streak going of at least one win for the past

twelve years here by taking the Open Pro and 500 A classes.

On the third attempt, they finally got the Open Pro class

going, with the top two being the same every time: Georgie

Price and Tom McGrane Jr. in front. On the third lap,

another red came out for Phil Libhart trying

to use Mike Varnes' bike as 'jump ramp'. Again, Price

proved why he is one of the best in the country with a roof

over the track, putting his MetroRacing.com/

Monster Plates sponsored Rotax into one just in front of

McGrane's Monster Plates/Diem's Cycle Rotax. While

McGrane kept on Price's rear tire the entire way, Don Mullen

was pounding away on Ken Yoder for third, while Raun Wood

was doing the same to Ricky Winsett Jr. for fourth, but

the places stayed the same to the end.

In the 500, Price gated third

behind Joe Dohm and Ivan Carl.

Off the fourth turn, Dohm caught a

rut and almost did a freestyle

'Superman' move, while heading for the wall. Luckily,

he recovered in time, but in a distant third. After a few

laps of probing, Price slipped under off the second turn

on the fifth lap to take the lead that he increased to a

five yard margin.

It looks like the 30+ class is going to be interesting,

especially in the early part of the season. National num-

ber holders, Mike

Varnes and Ken Yoder,

along with Rich Mellinger, have turned thirty. True to form,

Varnes was first out of the second turn, with Yoder right

behind him and Mellinger, Ivan Carl and Bob Sweeten bat-

tling for third. While Varnes held the lead for the entire race,

Yoder kept pounding away,

looking for an opening. Sweeten

moved into fourth on the fifth

lap.

In addition to Mees and

Price, another rider took a pair

of wins. Bailey Spence repeated

his 2001 win in the 50 Oil

Injected (4-6) and then took

the 50 (4-6) class on his Miller's

Cycle/VPE sponsored machines.

In the Oil Injected classes, he

was in third, behind Christian

Seek and Dan Bromley. Spence

took the lead entering the third turn on lap two, while Kyle

Schlimme slipped by Bromley for second at the end of the

second lap. Most of the same players returned for the 50

(4-6) race that Spence grabbed the lead from Bromley and

Schlimme. Darian Robinson sliced through the field, taking

second by the end of the second lap.

Several other riders repeated their class win from the

previous Motorama. Austin Greenland easily repeated in the

85 (7-11) as did Shawn Palmer in the 250 B class. Also,

moving up a class for a win were Joey Peters in the 50 (7-8)

class and John Lewis in the 125 B class. John Long survived

a confusing 65 final that had the leaders falling about every

other lap, while R. J. Hart topped the 85 (12-15). James

Schaeffer fought his way to the front of the 600 B, taking the

lead from race long leader Richard Pfanders, off the fourth

turn on the seventh lap. Making his first flat track start in

Sussex Motorsports backed Yamaha pilot, Ty Wallace topped both the 125 and 250 Pro/Expert class podiums before a packed house at the 24th annual Motorama Indoor Races and Speed Show at the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Wallace battled with Bromley Suzuki backed veteran Pro/Expert, Barry Carsten in the 125 main event final where Wallace made the win look relatively easy. In the 250 Pro/Expert final, Wallace battled with Carsten once again right off the gate and into the first turn, which allowed KTM pilot, Ryan Jones to sneak around the two to take the holeshot and the early lead. Wallace hung on and waited for the right moment to get around the talented Jones.

The pass came on lap five when Wallace used lapped traffic to his advantage to make the pass for the lead. On the following lap, all Hell broke loose on the tight, techni-cal arenacross track when at least three dif-ferent riders went down in two different technical sections creating a dangerous situ-ation for the downed riders. The race was red flagged and with 60% of the race run, was scored on the last lap completed giving Wallace another win and the lion’s share of the Pro/Expert purse.

Carsten, an AMA District Six local favorite, piloted his Suzuki to what looked like a pretty easy win in the Over 30 Pro/Expert class final. Rounding out the Over 30 Pro/Expert final podium were two more local favorites, Gaylon Dickson and Jim McIlvaine.

In the highly competitive 85cc 7-11 mini class, local boy Garrett Toth got out to the early lead and cruised to the final event win.

Rounding out the 85cc 7-11 class podium were Daniel Holton, Jr. and Broc Schmelyn.

Motorama, in its 24th year, is the largest event of its kind in northeastern Pennsylvania and features two full days of arenacross racing, a speed show, short-track, go-cart, and radio-controlled-car racing, trails exhibition and competition and the Miss Motorama beauty pageant. Motorama‘s arenacross is the first race of the new season on the AMA District Six calendar.

Wallace got the jump off the gate in the 125 Pro/Expert final and rounded the hard left first turn with the lead aboard his Sussex Motorsports YZF 250 thumper and never looked back. Rounding out the top five were Jones, Carsten, Kevin Brodsky Jr. and McIlvaine. The tight, technical track made passing

somewhat dif-ficult and lapped traffic becomes a factor for the leaders early on. By lap s e v e n , Wallace’s lead was a comfort-able four sec-onds. Carsten passed Jones on the previ-ous lap to take second, Jones was now third, Brodsky fourth and Dickson was now fifth. On lap eight, Dickson went down on the infield triple and took sev-eral riders with him as

yellow flags were waving everywhere. Fortunately, the top four were unaffected by the mayhem. Wallace took the checkers and the 125 Pro/expert final win followed by Carsten, Jones, Brodsky and Casey Clark.

KTM pilot Jones took advantage of the battle between Wallace and Carsten as they got off the gate and came into the first turn, managing to sneak around the outside of the two bar banging competitors to take the early lead in the 250 Pro/Expert final. In tow were Wallace, Carsten, Jeremy Cook and McIlvaine. Jones kept the lead until the end of lap five when Wallace took advantage of lapped traffic and made the pass on the unsuspecting Jones for the lead. Jones was relegated to second. Carsten and Cook were third and fourth with Brodsky moving up to fifth. On the following lap may-hem ensued as three riders went down in different sections creating a dangerous situation for all on the track.

The race was red flagged and scored on the last lap complet-ed. Wallace came out on top followed by Jones, C a r s t e n , Cook and Brodsky.

Carsten, the local veteran Pro/Expert Suzuki pilot, rounded the first turn in the Over 30 Expert final with the lead. Trailing were McIlvaine, Joe Ellington, Tim Schmelyn and Todd Weindel. On the second lap, Dickson passed Weindel for fifth after a not so great start. Dickson put his head down and began charging. On the following two laps, Dickson began picking off riders. First Dickson relegated Schmelyn to fifth, then he passed Ellington to take third and then began chipping away at the leaders and made the pass on McIlvaine for second near the end of lap seven. Carsten’s lead was a comfortable six seconds by lap eight, assuring Carsten the Over 30 Pro/Expert final event win. Dickson tried to go after Carsten but ran out of time and had to settle for second. Rounding out the Over 30 Pro/Expert podium were McIlvaine, Schmelyn and Ellington.

Kyle Werner nailed the holeshot in the 85cc 7-11 class final but went down hard in the second turn, giving the lead to Toth. Trailing Toth were Daniel Holton Jr, Brandon Seibold, Broc Schmelyn and Colton Harrison. Werner, who got the holeshot and led until his crash in the second turn, remount-ed dead last. Werner managed to work his way back to fifth when the two-laps-to-go signal came out. Werner once again went down but managed to remount only losing one spot for sixth by the checkered flag. Toth got the win. Rounding out the top five were Holton, Schmelyn, Seibold and Harrison. Sixth through tenth went to Werner, Scott Donaldson, Travis Overly, S. Bowen Moore and Jordan Donaldson.

I was kinda mad because I safd my money first but my brother got his Dirt Bike befor I did. It was OK because I no my dad was going to get me one soon. Then one night my Crazy dad came home and rode my pw 50 right into the liveing room. It made me feel Very, very, very happy inside because I new my dad loved me very much. the Girls ClubHey Girls, we’re designating a portion of the paper in each issue to us,,, the girls, who support, encourage, and follow our guys to the track each week. The idea behind this column is to ‘keep it light’ and HAVE FUN. We can share ideas, thoughts, and maybe even exchange ‘tips’ on how to handle the different situations us girls find ourselves in from time to time. For instance,,, Is your guy spending more time in the garage lately? Have you ever come home and found a note that read, ‘Honey, I’ve gone ridin’ with the guys, see ya tonight’? Does your guy stop by the cycle shop at least once a week and drag you with him? Do you feel that sometimes in order to get his attention, you have to sit on his machine? or better yet,,, will he even let you get ‘close’ to his toy? Even though your guy may not have done these particular things to you, I’m sure you could share with me some he has done. I’m going to be at the local tracks during this racing season to meet you, talk, compare notes, and make friends. My objective for this column in the coming season is to promote fun, with cycle and racer awareness, through the eyes of us ladies. The very first ‘girls-only’ survey I’m planning, is really quite simple and should be lots of fun. Here’s a hint,,, “NAME THAT PART” yeah,,, that’s right,,, at the bottom of the page is a picture of a dirt bike with lines pointing to specific parts, now,,,, “what’s that called?’

I’m sure it will be a blast to see what us girls come up with. Please know that my desire is not to offend any of us gals who already know this stuff, because many of us girls already know some, if not all the parts on our guys bike. Some of us girls already ride or race our own machines!!

What you need to do is write your answers down, cut it out and mail me your answers. The official results of the girls survey will be posted in the next issue. After taking the survey - ask your guy how you did,,, your guy may be really impressed,,,,,, he may even let you help him change the oil....... NOT........ but then again, he may laugh at some of your answers,,, but hav-ing him take the time to teach you the parts of his bike can’t be all that bad, can it??? He’s spending time with you, right ladies? So either way, we WIN! We all like attention from our guys.

The 31st running of the Daytona Supercross propelled Ricky Carmichael into the series points lead past David Vuillemin by5 points. Vuillemin, who couldn't ride because of a shoulder injury had to sit on the sidelines and watch RC take over 1st place in the series. David is hoping to return to the fight in round 10 in New Orleans. Carmichael pulled the holeshot, but was challenged early by both Tim Ferry and Travis Pastrana. Ferry took the lead for almost half a lap but the determined Carmichael quickly regained the lead and never looked back. Carmichael's win makes him only the third rider in the history of Daytona Supercross to win the main 3 years in a row.He joins the ranks of greats Jeff Stanton, and Mike Keidrowski, also with this win, he tiesex-Kawasaki icon Jeff Ward for all time wins.

In 125 action, Chad Reed again dominates the series in the East with his 4th straight win. Grant Langston pulled the hole-shot but had a real dogfight with Reed and Mike Brown right on his tail. On lap 7, Reed went to make his move through the whoops when he and Langston got into each other and Langston went down. Grant was able to get up and hold onto 3rd place, till the end of the race a full minute separated the three from the rest of the pack. Reeds win also sets a precedent in Daytona history. He is only the third non American to win a main event in 31 years of racing, Reed hails from Australia, and his win ties him with non other than Ricky Carmichael for 125cc wins.
