STORY TIME

Remember:Ancient Greece, which was close to Egypt, had myths

too.

Hades and Persephone

Persephone was the first living being to visit the Underworld where Hades ruled over the souls of the dead.

Zeus and Demeter were the parents of Persephone. Demeter was the goddess

of the harvest, and Zeus was the King of the gods

who ruled from Mount Olympus.

Hades, god of the Underworld, fell in love with Persephone and wanted her as his bride.

His brother Zeus did not have a problem with the marriage, but he knew Demeter would not want her daughter to live in the dark Underworld.

So, Hades planned to kidnap Persephone and force her to marry him.

One beautiful day, the sun shone brightly in the sky, the hills were lush and green, and flowers were blooming.

The beautiful, young Persephone skipped and danced with her friends upon the hillside, as her mother Demeter sat near by, and her father Zeus peered down from the sky above.

The girls laughed and whispered secrets to each other, as they gathered handfuls of purple crocuses, royal blue irises and sweet-smelling hyacinths.

Thinking of her mother, Persephone was about to gather some flowers for her when she saw one of the most enchanting flowers.

It was a narcissus. When she reached down to pluck it from its resting place, the earth began to tremble and split in half.

Hades suddenly appeared in his four-horse chariot. The god dropped down upon Persephone, grabbed her up with one arm, and left flowers scattered all over the ground.

None of her friends even knew what happened to her.

She cried out for help, but no one heard her .

As Hades and Persephone disappeared into the depths,

the hole closed up behind them.

Soon Demeter came to meet her daughter, but could not find a trace of Persephone. Sad and panicked, Demeter searched high and low for her daughter.

She traveled to the farthest corners of the earth, searching for nine full days and nights without everstopping to eat, drink, bathe,

or rest.

As she searched, Demeter

destroyed lands, crops, and

livestock.

She said she would make the earth fruitless

forever if she did not find her

daughter

On the tenth day, Demeter

finally found out her daughter

had been kidnapped and forced to marry Hades.

She was distraught about her

daughter, but the gods would not help her

rescue Persephone from Hades.

Therefore, Demeter refused to return to Mount Olympus and wandered the earth to keep the trees from bearing fruit and the land from bearing vegetables and herbs.

After a year, people began

to die of starvation as the

earth became barren and lifeless.

Zeus realized that he had to do something to bring back fertility to the earth, so he promised to reunite Demeter

with Persephone as long as she had not eaten any food in the Underworld.

Unfortunately, Persephone

had eaten 6 seeds from the

fruit of a pomegranate.

Therefore a compromise had

to be reached: Persephonehad to stay in the Underworld

for 6 months, one month for

each seed she ate.

For the other 6 months,

Persephone could be reunited on earth with her

mother.

During the 6 monthsPersephone is in the Underworld as the wife of

Hades, the earth is cold and

lifeless.

WhenPersephone returns to earth,

the trees bear fruit and the

flowers bloom.
