Lately, some teenagers have taken up vaping and in Matrix Global Schools we are concerned that our students might be influenced. What Is Vaping? Vaping is the inhaling of a vapour created by an electronic cigarette or other vaping devices which might look like flash drives and can be charged using a USB port in a laptop. The contents in the vapour depends on the liquid evaporated by the device and normally contains nicotine, chemicals and flavourings. Research has shown nicotine is highly addictive and can slow down brain development in teens and affect their memory, concentration, learning, self-control, attention, and ability to control their impulses and mood. If marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) oil and other dangerous chemicals are added, besides irritating the lungs, these drugs also affect how a person thinks, acts, and feels. Vaping is still a new phenomenon and how it affects the body over time is still being gathered. But health experts are reporting serious lung damage in people who vape, including some deaths. While the school leadership and teachers will do their best to guide our students, parents and guardians also have to be vigilant and probe further if their children / wards complain of frequent headaches and tiredness and are cranky, angry or depressed, or have trouble concentrating and sleeping and have general restlessness. Students in MGS, wanting to be the best and healthiest version of themselves should stay away from this harmful and bad habit. Do not indulge in vaping so that the vaporised dangerous drugs inhaled through vaping will not take control over your bodies and your faculties. The Form 4 students learned the 5 components of the approach which are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-Bound. The students were given 6 different cases to present.

The Entry Point is an exciting and memorable event that launchesevery IPC unit. It aims to get children thinking about, and engagedwith, the learning that is to follow. Recently, several classes within

MIS Primary have begun new units of learning with Entry Points.

Year 2 designed a cafe for their ‘We are what we eat’ Entry Pointby finding out about the roles required and the areas within the

cafe. This leads to a unit about healthy, balanced diets, as well asfood in history and culture.

Year 3, designed ‘Wacky Waterworks’ to investigate how water istransported for their unit ‘On tap’ where they are learning about

the water cycle and the importance of clean water around theworld.

Year 5 were introduced to ‘Investigators’ with a Crime SceneInvestigation. They made observations of the scene and collected

evidence, they then discussed the types of investigations they willhave to conduct in their ‘forensic training’ throughout the unit to

solve the case.

MISS PE : STRESS RELIEFACTIVITIES

He's is a minimalist artist. Was born on May 12, 1936, in Malden, Massachusetts,USA. Emphasises picture as art rather than picture as arepresentation of something. Stella loves to use SIMPLE geometric shapes & lines.

In this week's art class, Year 3 students completed FrankStella’s Protractor Series – 71 Patterns based on the circleand semi-circle. The teacher started the lesson byintroducing the artist's name. Students then use critical andcreative thinking skills to analyze and take responsibleactions on complex problems. The lesson objective is tocreate abstract works of art to help students understandcolour, shapes, and balance.

Step 1 - Who is Frank Stella?

Step 2 - The teacher provided the protractor and they haveto use organic or geometric shapes to start the artwork. There are two types of shapes, organic & geometric shapes.Geometric shapes have smooth even edges and aremeasurable. They include the square, the circle, the triangleand the rectangle.

Step 3 - Students started to do the small version of theprotractor inspired by Frank Stella, and then continued withthe background of the big version of the protractor. Thislesson is linked to Mathematics as they learned how todraw the shape (e.g. triangle, square or circle) andprotractor. The kids really enjoyed the lesson.

"This activity is really fun and challenging at the same time.It was reallyhard for me but my friends and Ms. Amy have motivated me to keep ongoing. It is also really fun because you can try to compete with others

and try to challenge yourself to see how fast and far you can go. Overallit is a really fun experience and I believe that this activity can make me

become more fit."

- Syaira Adriana, Year 7

Since we are unable to complete the sports activities that weusually teach in October, the MISS PE Department has decidedto try something new and introduced the 0 - 5 km challenge. The challenge is designed to ensure that students at all fitnesslevels can compete and see progression.

Running is a great way to reduce stress, improvecardiovascular endurance and strengthen muscles. We areextremely impressed by the effort shown by all students. Manyare sending pictures and videos of them completing thechallenge at the weekend and are even getting their familiesinvolved!

In addition, we are also offering badminton and fitness, andstudents will rotate around all three sports over the next fewweeks to ensure social distancing is followed. We are usingminimal equipment and anything used is cleaned withdisinfectant after every class. We also thoroughly clean allequipment every Friday ready to start the next week.

MISP GETS CREATIVEWITH ART

“First I use the protractor to draw the semi-circle and I cut the semi-circleand I decorate the semi-circle and then I paste the semi-circle on the big

semi-circle and lastly I colour the big semi-circle.”- Ramos Valence, Year 3

“I use a protractor to make a sharp shape then I cut it then colour it withrainbow colours.”

- Althea Reinielle, Year 3

“We used a protractor, crayon, scissors and pencil.” - Iman Mischa, Year 3

“I cut and paste small papers on the big paper.” - Lisa Li, Year 3

"It improves our cardiovascular endurance and our aerobic techniques. Ithas improved my stamina levels and also increased my speed by a

considerable margin. Although it has conjured up mixed emotions for me,it has been fun even though I have to social distance with my friends, I

also have had the opportunity to show my ability in PE."

- Nilesh Shan Nair, Year 7

"This challenge is something that helps students increase their stamina, ability to run different distances and their fitness. We complete 2 sessions

a week in school and one at home and then we send our results to Ms.Amy on an application called Strava. This application actually helps ussee our timing and how many miles we have run during our time. The

challenge benefits us because we are getting fitter and it allows us to runeven longer distances without feeling tired. Plus, if we continue this

activity it will be good for our social, emotional and physical health."

EXTRA LESSONSUPPORT

IN BOARDINGHOUSE

“The journey of a lifetime starts with theturning of a page” – Rachel Anders. Yes,reading opens minds and evokes all senses inhumans. As such, MPS students are beingintroduced to a new reading programmecalled 'DEAR' - Drop Everything and Read.”This programme encourages all students toread during the half an hour slot from 7.45a.m. till 8.15 a.m. every day.

Most students bring their own storybooks toread, whilst some students take thisopportunity to read the books from thelibrary which are made available in theirclassrooms. The calming effect of quietreading helps set the right tone for ourstudents’ learning for the day.

MGS Boarding House continued their free enrichment/enhancement classes forall borders in October 2020. This month we are offering Mandarin, English,History, Science and Chemistry, Mathematics and Accounting. The main aim ofproviding these classes is to assist boarders who need help in their studies and toensure that the SPM and Checkpoint boarders master the concepts they havelearned and to do well in their examinations.
