Technology for InnovatorsTM

Modular Architecture

MSP430 von-Neumann architecture — all program, data memory and peripherals share a common bus structure. Consistent CPU instructions and addressing modes are used.

MSP430 Modern Orthogonal 16-BitRISC CPU

The MSP430 CPU core with sixteen 16-bit registers, 27 single-cycle instructions and sevenaddressing modes results in higher processing efficiency and code density.

Texas Instruments MSP430 Microcontrollers 2 www.ti.com/msp430

Key Features• Ultra-low-power architecture

extends battery life:– 0.1 µA RAM retention– 0.8 µA real-time clock mode– 250 µA/MIPS active

• Wide range of integrated intelligent peripherals offload the CPU

• Modern 16-bit RISC CPU enables new applications at a fraction of the code size

• Complete integrated develop-ment environment starting at $99

Key Applications• Utility metering• Portable instrumentation• Intelligent sensoring

MSP430 ArchitectureA 16-bit RISC CPU, peripherals and

flexible clock system are combined by

using a von-Neumann common

memory address bus (MAB) and

memory data bus (MDB). Partnering a

modern CPU with modular memory-

mapped analog and digital peripherals,

the MSP430 offers solutions for today’s

and tomorrow’s mixed-signal

applications.

Device Configuration• 1-KB to 120-KB ISP Flash

• RAM up to 10 KB

• 14- to 100-pin options

Integrated Peripherals• 10-/12-/16-bit ADC

• 12-bit DAC

• Comparator

• LCD driver

• Supply Voltage Supervisor (SVS)

• Operational amplifiers

• USART/I2C

• Hardware multiplier

• 16-bit and 8-bit timers

• DMA controller

Ultra-Low Power• Zero-power brownout reset (BOR)

• 1-µs clock startup

• 50-nA pin leakage

Modern 16-Bit RISC CPU• Large register file eliminates

accumulator bottleneck• Optimized for C and

assembler programming • Compact core design reduces

power and cost• Up to 16 MIPS of performance

available

The MSP430’s orthogonal archi-

tecture provides the flexibility of

16 fully addressable, single-cycle

16-bit CPU registers and the power

of a RISC. The modern design of the

CPU offers versatility through

simplicity using only 27 easy-to-

understand instructions and seven

consistent-addressing modes. This

results in a 16-bit low-power CPU

that has more effective processing, is

smaller-sized, and more code-

efficient than other 8-/16-bit

microcontrollers. Now it’s possible to

develop new ultra-low-power,

high-performance applications at

a fraction of the code size.

Ultra-fast 1-µs DCO start-up allows MSP430 systems to remain in low-power modes for thelongest possible interval—extending battery life. The DCO is fully user programmable.

Multiple Oscillator Clock System

Ultra-Low-Power Activity Profile

MSP430 Product Portfolio

Flexible Clock System• Low-frequency auxiliary clock:

—Ultra-low-power stand-by mode• High-speed master clock:

—High-performance processing• Stability over time and temperature

The MSP430 clock system is designedspecifically for battery-powered applications. Multiple oscillators areutilized to support event-driven burstactivity. A low frequency AuxiliaryClock (ACLK) is driven directly froma common 32-kHz watch crystal—with no additional external compo-nents. The ACLK can be used for abackground real-time clock self wake-up function. An integrated high-speedDigitally Controlled Oscillator (DCO)can source the master clock (MCLK)used by the CPU and sub-main clock(SMCLK) used by the high-speedperipherals. By design, the DCO isactive and stable in 1 µs. MSP430-based solutions efficiently use 16-bitRISC CPU high-performance in veryshort burst intervals. This results invery high-performance and ultra-lowpower consumption.

Intelligent PeripheralsWith purely software-driven functions, the CPU is 100% active and consumingpower. Effectively utilizing peripheralsallows the CPU to be turned off to savepower or lets the CPU work on otheractivities to achieve the highest performance.

All MSP430 peripherals are designed torequire the least amount of softwareservice. For example, the analog-to-digital converters all have automaticinput channel scanning, hardwarestart-of-conversion triggers and oftenDMA data-transfer mechanisms. Thesehardware features allow the CPUresources to focus more on differentiat-ed application-specific features and lesson basic data handling. This means thatlower cost systems can be implement-ed using less software and lower power.

MSP430F1xxThe MSP430F1xx family of MCUs offers a wide range of capabilities from a simple low power controller with a comparator, to complete systems on achip including high-performance dataconverters, interfaces and multiplier.

MSP430F4xxThe ultra-low-power MSP430F4xx family has an integrated LCD controllerfor low power metering and medicalapplications. Several devices offer application-based peripherals to providesingle-chip solutions for flow and electricity metering. These integratedperipherals help reduce total chip count, system cost and power consumption.

MSP430F2xxThe new ultra-low-power MSP430F2xxfamily increases performance up to 16 MHz. Additional enhancements ofMSP430F2xx, which further reduce theneed for external components, includean integrated ±2.5% on-chip oscillator,software-selectable, internal pull-up/pull-down resistors andincreased number of analog inputs. The in-system programmable Flash has also been improved with smaller64-byte segments, programming timesas fast as 17 micro-seconds per byteand a lower 2.2-V programming voltageallowing the elimination of externalEEPROMs in most systems.

MSP-FET430 Flash Emulation Tool• JTAG based real-time in-system

emulation• Target board, interface box,

cable and samples• CD-ROM includes IAR Kickstart

and TI Code ComposerEssentials™ IDEs (8-KB code limited)

• USB and parallel cable versionsavailable

The Flash Emulation Tool (FET)supports complete in-systemdevelopment and is available for all Flash devices. Programming,assembler/C-source level debug, single stepping, multiple hardwarebreakpoints, full-speed operationand peripheral access are all fullysupported in-system using JTAG.The FET comes complete witheverything required to complete an entire project.

Embedded Emulation with theMSP430• Development is in-system and

subject to the exact same char-acteristics of the final application

• Non-obtrusive in portable andhigh-pin count situations

• Common user software andphysical interface

Today’s applications operating atlower voltages, with tighter pack-aging and higher-precision analog, benefit greatly from the MSP430’sin-system emulation approach.

The MSP430’s dedicated embeddedemulation logic resides on theactual device itself and is accessedvia JTAG using no additional system resources. From the firstday of development, firmwareengineers can now unobtrusivelydevelop and debug their embeddedcode with full-speed execution, breakpoints, and single steps in anapplication.

Embedded emulation becomeseven more important with high-performance mixed-signal systemsthat must maintain the integrity ofmicrovolt analog signals. Signalintegrity is virtually impossible withcumbersome in-circuit emulators

that are sensitive to cablingcrosstalk. And, unlike abstract back-ground debuggers, no time-sharingof system serial communicationresources is required with embed-ded emulation on the MSP430.

By combining the flexibility of in-system programmable Flashmemory, unobtrusive embeddedemulation, and a common userinterface, development time is significantly reduced. And, shouldthe situation arise, last minute codeupdates as well as remote scheduledand unscheduled upgrades can alsobe made.
