Welcome to the Mudeford Mag!

September! A time to re focus our energiesand take things a little slower. The childrenare now back at school and the pace of lifeisn t quite so hectic as the previous summermonths. Although traditionally known as thestart of autumn, perhaps a more positive termwould be late summer when temperatures areoften at their most temperate, weather-wise.

It's good to see that things are slowly gettingback to normal and if you are feelingcomfortable getting out and about again therea couple of events you might be interested in.The Marine Conservation Society are holdingtheir annual Great British Beach Clean thismonth between 18-25th September and if youwould like to take part details can be found onpage S8. The wine of the month comes from a very important wineproducer from the Alentejo district of Portugal, just south ofLisbon. Those eagle-eyed readers will notice that we featuredtheir white wine (Pegoes Colheita Seleccionada) a couple ofmonths back (which is still my favourite white in the shop!)

This 2017 vintage is being heralded as one of the best formany years,

Fermentation took place in stainless steel vats at controlledtemperatures followed by a long maceration to extract colour,flavours and tannins. The wine was aged for 12 months in 225litre French and American oak of second passage, followed byfour months in bottle prior to release.

Tasting Note: An intense wine with flavours of black cherrycomplemented by delicate floral notes and vanilla spice fromthe well-integrated oak. Smooth and flavoursome on thepalate with good structure through to a spicy and warm finish.Punching way above its weight, this is an extremely classy full-bodied red.

I have just returned from a grand World tour and ended an era at the same time. We set sail having filled the yacht with water, gin and crackers, and departed through Mudeford run and entrance with the wind and tide against us but with a smile at having escaped land!

As we rounded and waved goodbye to Land’s End (Hengistbury Head) we called the coastguard at the top to say good morning and ‘thank you’ for watching owatching over us and decided which of the three cruise ships we would sail closest to. Allure of the Seas was deceptively far out, which gives some idea of scale, but the Queen Elizabeth II and Aurora were on our course as we pointed across the channel to France.

2 hours later we gave up tacking by sail and headed for mainland Europe with the engine on. The sails at least made us look like we were trying…! Soon we spotted our friends on their boat who were getting most impatient that we wethat we were holding up lunch and anchored in a beautiful spot in Brittany. (Well…to be honest we were in Studland Bay).

After some sunshine and refreshment, it was deemed that chugging through the Corinthian Canal was now achievable as the tide had turned. Dodging some mighty beast called a Condor ferry and a strange vessel held down by chains, we entered the Aegean sea and made passage to a town quay marina that was expecting us. It looked surprisingly similar to Poole, but we were ready for a meal and sleep.

TThe next morning, our friends abandoned their motor-boat and joined us on our rather small ship, to set off in pursuit of darkest Africa and the African Queen adventure. The main challenge was not running aground and navigating through strange red and green sticks that stuck out of the water showing our way. On arrival in the Congo (well it may have been Wareham) we took liberty at tying up on an available mooring to go in search of local cuisine. A beer and a packet of sandwiches later we discovered we had parked illegally as a rather officious man shouted at us with his arms crossed. We departed at speed assisted by the rapidly outgoing tide, down the river before being deported.

Once fOnce free of the waving grasses of the river we hoisted a sail and made haste to a near deserted island- I think it was Australia (but is possibly known as Brownsea Island to the locals) and tied up to a buoy to have a rest. Once recovery was complete, we made the long passage to the next anchorage called Florida, (but it did look remarkably like Studland again which was curious…)

Our loOur lovely little yacht- Muddy Bear, is now on her way to new owners as we have decided that she is a tad small for us now, but the point of this article is really that you don’t have to go far to have fun. Its more about who you are with and the memories you create. We are very blessed to live here, and so are all of you reading this! I guess it’s time to get back to being a Physio again!! Keep well and keep safe. We will get through these current times, even if we have to dream a little and embrace the new normal.

Mondays are always a struggle and todaywas no exception.

My broadband had stopped working and Idreaded the chore of ringing the provider asit always took so long to get through. It washaving to endure selecting all those multipleoptions that were being asked by a machineand not a real person.

The initial annoyance was with therecorded voice requesting a yes or no answerto which product you would like to discuss.All the selections were pointing me awayfrom reaching the right department. Pressingthe number one key on my phone I was

subjected to a further six options and, beforeI even had a chance to reply, they asked meif I would like to complete a questionnaire oncustomer service which shouldn’t take morethan two minutes. No, I ruddy well wouldn’t.I’d been ten minutes on the phone already.

Then I heard the words, we are connectingyou to an operator. What this really meantwas the call was being placed in a queue andmy ears were to be subjected to noisy popmusic. There were constant interruptionstelling me that instead of waiting I could findthe answers to my questions by logging ontotheir site.

I despaired and muttered, ‘If I hadbroadband, I would be happy to surf the netto solve the problem. I have no broadband,so I can’t get online and that’s why I’m callingyou.’

Ten further minutes dragged by andI listened to a collection of hits from theseventies. Eventually, to my relief, I wassuddenly greeted by a real person.

‘Hello Mrs TomWillis, my name is Peter.How are you today? Are you having a greatday?’

Realising I was talking to someone halfway across the world, I politely replied, ‘Hello,actually it’s MrWillis and not MrsWillis. I can’tget my broadband to work.’

‘Oh, dear, MrsWillis, I can’t help you withthat but you can speak to our customerservices team to discuss our products. Pleasering 0800…’

Why wasn’t he listening? I calmly clarifiedmy gender again. ‘Look I’ve already told youI amMrWillis and not MrsWillis.’

‘MrWillis, I will need to ask you somesecurity questions.’

By now I was sweating profusely but atleast he had me down as male.We weremoving forward, or so I thought.

It took ages to repeat the address and alsomy date of birth. Then he asked me what myfavourite pet was. I quickly replied, ‘It’s a cat.’

‘MrWillis, is that your answer?’

‘Yes, it’s a cat. I can assure you I only haveone pet and she’s a cat!’What was I supposedto have said, lesser spotted horseshoe bat?

Thankfully he moved on to ask the natureof the problem.

‘Look, I’ve already told you the broadbandis not working, are you able to help me?’

‘MrWillis, are you having good weather?’

‘What’s the weather got to do with all ofthis?’

The man at the other end of the phonerushed through his next sentence and Istruggled to decipher his words. It wassomething along the lines of waiting for twominutes to speak to his supervisor.’

I sighed as the wretched recorded musicstarted again and after what seemed an agethe line went dead. I slammed the phonedown. I had wasted so much time on thissupplier and now needed to go out to theshops. I would have another go later.

When I returned home after battling withthe supermarket, I put everything awaybefore phoning the call centre and to myamazement got straight through to a humanbeing, not a machine. I was speaking to thesame person as before and he rememberedour earlier chat.

‘Hello it’s MrWillis calling again - we gotcut off earlier.’

‘I will need to take you through security.’

Gritting my teeth, I decided that if thefavourite pet question came up again, Iwouldn’t mention the word cat.

‘What’s your account number?’

I pulled on my glasses and read it outslowly knowing I’d probably have to repeat itall again.

‘I can’t find that number. First line of youraddress and postcode please.’

He seemed a little faster with his actionsand I prayed he’d actually get round to why Iwas calling.

‘MrWillis, we don’t have your details onrecord.’

‘Oh, give me strength, I have been withyour company for forty years and you supplymy broadband.’

‘Broadband,’ came back a puzzled voice.‘Broadband, we have no broadband MrWillis– we are suppliers of gas and electricity.’

Feeling like I wanted the deep pile carpetto swallowme up, I muttered, ‘Oh, I’m sosorry; I must have dialled the wrong number.’

I had indeed called my energy companyon both occasions and the fault was entirelymine. I could sense my wife’s annoyance asher eyes travelled up to the ceiling and backdown to my red face. Vigorously shakingher head, she sighed and said, ‘Next time, I’llmake the call.’

I returned to the hall to place the phoneback on its base and noticed the broadbandpower lead wasn’t plugged into the wallsocket. I recalled having done my hooveringearlier so it must have been me that left theplug out. I laughed out aloud just like I haddone yesterday on discovering my glassescase in the fridge propped up next to theseriously mature cheddar cheese.

Oh well, it had been a busy day with allmy telephone calls and I needed a cup oftea. It felt like I had been half way aroundthe world. I had even spoken to a man whothought I was a woman.

“Early flights in the Lancastrian, born ofthe iconic Lancaster bomber ofWorldWar 2, were not without their problems.My second flight as a steward was spentlocked in the toilet for hours, to bereleased by another crewmember witha screwdriver who had wondered whereI had got to. The same plane prior to ourreturn journey from Karachi had to have anentire engine replaced, whilst passengersand crew were treated to a tour ofJerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazarethcourtesy of BOAC. It seems all mechanicalthings were not so reliable in those days.The coach taking us on the tour brokedown halfway through resulting in thedriver having to hitch hike to the nearesttelephone to organise replacementtransport.

In the scheme of things not as crucial asall 4 engines cutting out as we acceleratedto take off from Hurn on my third flight. Afault had caused the failure, fortunatelybefore our under carriage left the runway.

My time ended on the ‘Lancastrian’ asthe new Avro ‘York’weas introduced toservice. This was an aircraft designed withpassengers and freight in mind insteadof Bomb bays and machine gun turrets.

However, it did still use 4 noisy Rolls RoyceMerlins. It had stepped up from 12 to 24passengers, or the PCF (passenger/freight)version, 12 passengers and a lot morefreight. Ironically because of the extraweight, the same old engines meant wehad to make more refuelling stops.

It was around this time that ‘Dakota’flightsto Lisbon andWest Africa were transferredfromWhitchurch, Bristol to Hurn. Flightsto Johannesburg were made in the AvroYork with refuelling stops in either Maltaor Libya, on to Cairo and then Khartoumand Nairobi, finally with views of MountKilimanjaro and onto Johannesburg. Thereturn trip on the ‘York’ to Calcutta, viaKarachi and Delhi, was a round trip of 12days.

I was later transferred to Poole BOACFlying Boat, based in what is now PooleHarbour Yacht Club at Lilliput. The‘Sunderland’powered by Bristol Centaurusengines were much quieter than theold Merlins, although on take-off, it didsound as though the bottom of the planewas being ripped off by the water. It wasaltogether a roomier plane and now with 2of us to look after the passengers, we wereunder a little less pressure. Prior to theflight to Singapore, crew and passengerswere checked into the Harbour HeightsHotel for a night, before the early start ofa flight that involved 9 refuelling stops inFrance, Sicily, Cairo, Basra, Bahrein, Karachi,Calcutta, Rangoon and Penang resulting in99 flying hours over 17 days. How thingshave changed on long haul flights today!

Theemerging research from the Institute for StudentEmployers (ISE, 2020) suggests graduaterecruitment is already down 12% comparedto last year, with small and medium-sizedenterprises (SMEs) in particular reducing thenumber of graduates they intend on recruiting.Graduates need to use all the tools they canto promote their strengths and abilities in acrowded work space.

Understanding your Myers Briggs personalitytype focusses you on which career areas you willhave a natural ability in and where to centre yoursearch. It also identifies your blind spots, areasthat you don’t recognise within yourself, butmay be holding you back in a self-sabotage way,given your personality type.

INHERITANCE ANDBLENDED FAMILIES

How often do we read in thenewspaper “I was cut out of myDad’s estate by his second wife”or “my mother died and now mystepfather plans to leave everythingto his 2 children.”

Under UK law persons have theright to leave their estates towhomever they wish but thesecases highlight the difficultieswhere wills can be changed afterthe death of one partner to favourthe other’s family.

Mr and Mrs Smith married in 2008.It was a second marriage for both ofthem and they each had 2 childrenfrom their first marriage. They madewills leaving everything to eachother and then providing that on thedeath of the survivor the remainingestate would be left equally amongthe 4 children. Mr Smith died in2010 and Mrs Smith changedher will shortly afterwards leavingthe remaining estate to her ownchildren and nothing to Mr Smith’schildren. Mrs Smith died in 2012and it was only then that Mr Smith’schildren found out that they were toreceive nothing.

Mr Smith’s children wrote to MrsSmith’s children asking for theirinheritance but they were ignored.

Situations like this are a commonsource of argument. One ofthe best ways to preserve aninheritance for your children is toplace it into a life interest trust.This means that a spouse orpartner can use assets such ashomes, cash and investmentswhile they are alive. Once theydie, however, the assets will go towhoever they want – for exampletheir own children.

A life interest trust is also a bonusif the survivor of a couple movesinto a nursing home as the trustassets will not be treated as capitalbelonging to the survivor.

Another way of preserving aninheritance is to make “mutualwills”. These do put constraints onwhat someone can do with theirassets. They are very rare andshould be approached with caution.They prevent a surviving spouse orpartner taking account of changingcircumstances.

Do consider when making anychanges to your will:Getting a doctor or psychiatrist toconfirm that you understand whatyou are doing and have mentalcapacity.

Tell your family what you are doingand if you feel you cannot do thisleave a handwritten letter explainingyour decision to be read after yourdeath.

If you are cutting out a memberof your family explain why – forexample because they arefinancially independent.

If you are donating to a charityexplain why you want to supportthem.

Take legal advice and have yournew will drawn up properly.

year the charity is hoping more organisers thanever before will take ownership of their localbeaches to support the project and collect allimportant data.

The charity has made becoming an organiser,adopting a beach and doing the survey as easyas possible, with plenty of resources availableon the Marine Conservation Society website andguidance from the charity’s Beachwatch teamavailable.

Data collected by Marine Conservation Societyvolunteers from 26 years of the Great BritishBeach Clean has been instrumental in thecreation of policies which stop single-use plasticpollution at source: the 5p single-use carrier bagcharge, the ban on plastic coffee stirrers andstraws and the commitment to a Deposit ReturnScheme in Scotland, alongside much more.

This year, the charity will ask volunteers to recordhowmuch personal protective equipment theyfind on the UK’s beaches, including gloves andmasks. This information will show how prolificPPE has become and the danger it poses to themarine environment and wildlife.

This September the Marine ConservationSociety will run its annual Great British BeachClean for a week of citizen science from 18 –25th September 2020, supported by players ofPeople’s Postcode Lottery. The charity is callingfor more organisers than ever to adopt a 100metre stretch of beach to clean and carry out alitter survey.

The Great British Beach Clean is more than justlitter picking - people become citizen scientistsand carry out a litter survey, recording what theyfind on the beaches to help show a national andinternational picture of the most common formsof litter. During last year’s Great British Beach Cleanweekend, citizen scientists across the UKcollected over 500 litter items per 100m ofbeach, with nearly 11,000 volunteers taking part.

Like many events, this year the Great BritishBeach Clean looks a little different. Rather thanencouraging volunteers to find a beach cleanhappening near them, the Marine ConservationSociety is calling on individuals to adopt a 100mstretch of beach and organise their own beachcleans, with smaller groups of friends, family and‘bubbles’, in line with Government guidance. There’s one person in history who connectsme very directly with both the place I grew up(the Vale of Evesham,Worcestershire) and theplace where I now hang my hat (Christchurch,Dorset).

Gilbert de Clare (1243-95), 8th Earl ofGloucester, was born in Christchurch, I assumeat the castle. When he was aged just 21, hefought at the Battle of Evesham (4th August1265). It was the single-most important eventin the history of the town where I was schooled(my ‘alma mater’ lay about as close to the fieldof battle as was possible). He was known as ‘theRed Earl’ on account of either his red hair or hisferociousness in battle.

A baronial magnate, de Clare would play aprominent part in the Second Barons’War(1264-67). The first of these civil wars had beenfought over 1215-16 and was a result of KingJohn’s attempts to wriggle out of the provisionsof Magna Carta (John, incidentally, the mostfrequent royal visitor to Christchurch with tenstays at the castle). Come the 1260s, it wasJohn’s son, Henry III, who was inbaronial bother.

The rebels, led by Simon de Montfort(c.1208-65), were out for better governance.‘Christchurch Gilbert’ started out on the sideof the barons and fought with de Montfort atLewes (14th May 1264), a battle that saw boththe king and his son, Prince Edward, captured.Earl Simon called a parliament, held to havebeen the most representative yet summoned,which has led to him, rightly or wrongly,

being dubbed ‘the Father of ParliamentaryDemocracy’.

Prince Edward escaped from his captivity,however, and an almighty dust-up betweenthe two parties was in the offing. Gilbert deClare perhaps saw the direction the windwas blowing and changed sides. When thedecisive battle occurred at Evesham, de Clarefought alongside Edward as one of his keycommanders, de Montfort was cruelly slain, andHenry III was restored to his throne. Fortunately,however, the cause of parliamentarydemocracy did not die with Earl Simon. Thevictor of Evesham, Prince Edward, wouldaccede to the throne as the martial Edward I in1272, summoning his ‘Model Parliament’ (1295)and going down in history as the ‘Hammer ofthe Scots’, the king who finally did for ScottishrebelWilliamWallace (as portrayed by MelGibson in ‘Braveheart’), who was defeated andexecuted in August 1305.

Meanwhile, de Clare, happily restored intothe royal bosom, was able to act as mediatorbetween Henry III and the rebels as the civilwar was ended in 1267. The Christchurch laddid pretty well for himself, helping to securethe accession of Edward, a friendship that wascemented in 1290 when de Clare wed the newking’s daughter, Joan of Acre (his second wife).He died peacefully in December 1295, aged 52,30 years after the battle that he played such apivotal role in.

My partner, David knows all about cars, his veryfirst job had been as a garage mechanic. Hedidn’t like driving my old car as it had no powersteering and he reckoned it was like drivinga tank.

I took little notice when he kept pointing out“nice”new cars. He told me modern cars hadpower steering, central locking and electricwindows, and are much easier to drive. Ihumoured him for a while, but eventually toldhim that my car will last me for a life time, andI have no plans to change it, and anyway, Idefinitely wouldn’t want electric windows orcentral locking, and I can’t afford a new one.

Finally, he got the message, and stoppedadmiring other cars when we were out for adrive, and life went on as normal. When myMOT was due, he protested that the pricewas extortionate, and his garage could do itcheaper and faster so, bowing to his superiorknowledge I cancelled my appointment andhe took my car off to his garage, armed with asigned blank cheque, which he’d asked for tocover the cost.

Soon after he’d gone the doorbell rang, andthere on the doorstep stood my son and hisfiancé who lived in London. I was thrilled!“What a lovely surprise,” I said hugging themboth, “come in and I’ll put the kettle on.”“Mum,”said Mark, “we’ve got something to showyou,” indicating the car on the drive. “Oh, howwonderful, you’ve got a lovely new car” I said,beaming at them. “No mum”said Mark “you have!”

Totally confused I asked what he meant. “I’vebought you a new car mum, your old car isheavy, and too hard for you to drive at nearly 70years old, and it’s time for a change!”

When I recovered my breath, I told him Davidhad taken my car for its MOT. “No, I haven’t “saida little voice from around the corner! I was (forthe first time in my life) speechless. “But, howdid you knowMark was getting me a new one?“Ah there has been a lot of organisation behindthe scenes said David grinning.

It turned out Mark had asked David to find outmy preference for colour, model, etc. and Davidwas detailed with the detective work. Davidtold us all how difficult it had been, as I’d beenquite obstructive, not wanting to discuss othercars, and Mark had found it difficult to find anew car without electric windows and centrallocking!!

It was the biggest surprise of my life! When I’dwiped away my emotional tears, I asked Davidwhat he did with my blank cheque. He passedit back to me, and with a broad grin, he told me“that was to get your signature on the new cardocument, which you happily and trustinglysigned without question. “

That was all 12 years ago, and I’m still happilydriving my not-so-new now car, and stillmarvelling at Mark’s generosity and David’spersistence, and at all the subterfuge andsecrecy that gave me such a totally unexpectedand fantastic surprise.

In my 80’s now, this car really will last me allmy life.

The all-time harbour list hasgrown to 329 species followingacceptance by the Dorset RecordsPanel (DRP) of a Great Shearwaterseen flying west from MudefordQuay in August 2018.

One of the most valuable thingsabout bird annual reports is thatthey enable professional andamateur ornithologists alike tomonitor the fluctuating fortunesof species – whether, for example,numbers are up or down and whatlong term trends may be apparent.Such trends can be affected byvarious factors, not least habitatand climate changes.

Take the Great White Egret, whichwas once a real rarity in the UK.Last year, Christchurch Harbourexperienced its best year everwith 13 ‘bird days’ for this majesticspecies. Stanpit, HengistburyHead and Mudeford Quay were

The recently published 61stAnnual Report of the ChristchurchHarbour Ornithological Group(CHOG) reveals that a total of 202bird species were recorded locallyin 2019, compared with similartotals of 200 in 2018 and 206 in2017.

the places where Great WhiteEgrets were seen – the earliestrecord of the year being one pastHengistbury on 3 April and thelatest record being at Stanpit on4 November.

The now-familiar Little Egret,which I clearly remember‘twitching’ in the late ‘80s, nowbreeds in small numbers withinChristchurch Harbour. At leastthree nests were apparentlyoccupied at Hengistbury last year.The superficially similar CattleEgret (a familiar sight feeding oninvertebrates around the feet ofcattle, rhinos and other hoovedanimals in Africa) is another birdcolonising our shores and seemsset to follow in the footsteps ofLittle and Great White Egrets.

Cattle Egret was once a scarcevisitor to Christchurch Harbour butin recent years has become moreregular. Ornithologists ferventlyhope it won’t be long beforewe have all three egret speciesbreeding regularly in the harbour.

Another water-dwelling species Inever tire of watching is the statelyall-white Spoonbill. Unfortunately,2019 was a poor year for thisspecies in Christchurch Harbour,the total of just 30 ‘bird days’ beingthe worst in the recording area forfive years.

Many birders, myself included,sometimes journey far and wideto see rare or other special birds,but ‘lockdown’ has proved, if proofwere needed, that you can still seea diverse range of winged wondersright on our doorstep in andaround Christchurch Harbour.

There is so much good to come out of this situation we find/foundourselves in if we but just seek it. For me, one of the most enlighteningmoments is how our older generation have handled themselves with

dignity and a kind of unphased attitude to the chaos that surrounds them.

Our older generation know so much and have experienced so much. Theyhave lived life and despite their aged looks, they are the wisest of the wiseand can be turned to in times of worry to give a stoic response, often with

a twinkle in their eyes.

Whatever comes out of these times, I know, for sure, that there will be adeeper respect for our older generation and a love for all of mankind and

humanity.

As humans we need each other, more than we ever know and this periodof confinement has made us realise how connected we truly are.

‘The Friends of Hurst Castle’

was formed in 1986 to act as a supportgroup to a local site belonging to EnglishHeritage. At that time the Castle wasmanaged by English Heritage, but since

May 1996 there has been joint Management, with English Heritage still incharge of the fabric of the building and general policies, and the localmanagement ‘Hurst Marine’ running theeveryday management and the ferry services.

The ‘Friends’ aim is still to support in any waythey can, financially with any project,enhancement of the building and assisteducationally and in any research they can.We arrange social events and, from time totime, a newsletter for our Members.

We have a group of enthusiastic volunteers whogo up to the Castle on Mondays, throughout theyear, to carry out any jobs that need doing, suchas renovating and painting guns andcanons, plus looking after the exhibition roomsthat are in constant need of re-painting.They also look after the many Artefacts that have beendonated to the ‘Friends’ over the years. These dedicated folk arerewarded with plenty of mugs of hot tea, biscuits and sometimes cake!

Beachcomber SouthernSweet Gin is produced in Lymingtonwhile BH1 Gin unsurprisingly has it’sbase in Bournemouth.

From the New forest we have Wyrd Ginand Mary Rose Gin from Hythe. In thebeautiful Hampshire countryside we findWinchester Distillery in Old Arlesfordand Gorilla Spirits in Upton Grey. FromDorset’s historic Cerne Abbas comesViper Gin and just across the borderin Wiltshire Explorers gin is crafted.So with all of these fantastic gins righton our doorstep it would be rude notto go out and give them a try, you’ll beamazed at the quality and versatility ofthis great drink.
