    ABSTRACT

Sand temperature data were collected at middlenest depth for C. caretta (30 cm) at Cape Canaveral, from 1986-1995. These data were used to determineannual temperature variability over the decade inrelation to a previous five-year study which indicateda strong female bias (Mrosovsky and Provancha1993). Seasonal mean sand temperatures rangedfrom 29.6 to 31.3 (oC), with most biweekly meansabove the pivotal temperature for Caretta (29.4 oC).Annual variation during the decade was notstatistically significant, however, the 1988 and 1991nest seasons had lowest temperatures, closest tothe pivotal.

Study Site Sand temperature data from fixed stakesalong transects: manual intermittent &automated continuous collections.

    Manual : YSI Model 33 with soilprobes accuracy +/- 0.25 oCAutomatic: Hydrolab Datasonde(model 2020, accuracy +/- 0.1 oC ), GrantSquirrel Meter (accuracy +/- 0.2 oC ) andLi-Cor 1000 with soil probes (accuracy+/- 0.5 oC) .

Nest data were collected by biologistsduring daily crawl surveys of the Capeand Kennedy Space Center beaches.
