Background for multimodality

Page 6: Multimodal mobility points in the Baltic Sea region ... · Multimodal mobility points in the Baltic Sea region –experiences from the Cities.multimodal project Dr Kristina Gaučė,

Antakalnis SUMPlaning goalsThe main goal was of course to decrease car traffic (especially transit), but more over with this initiative:

• To ensure overall connectivity among sustainable transport modes• To ensure that MPs contribute to this by:

- having good accessibility to the MPs;- having good exit out off the MPs (on foot, by bicycle, PT, shared modes).

Main target groups:- first\last mile travellers (residents);- transit travellers;- target points (schools, hospital) visitors.

Page 7: Multimodal mobility points in the Baltic Sea region ... · Multimodal mobility points in the Baltic Sea region –experiences from the Cities.multimodal project Dr Kristina Gaučė,

- Next to good PT

- Serves as a first\last mile solution

- Can act as additional service (Bike&Go) to existing target objects (e.g. hospital)

- Liveable place – secure place

4 stops where PT is extremely effective (fast buses and regular buses, city and regional transport)

Most liveable and densely used stops

Stops serving residents in greater distance

MAIN ASPECTS FOR MPS LOCATION

Feasibility to allocate: bicycle shed, charging infrastructure for e-vehicles

23 PT stops

Page 13: Multimodal mobility points in the Baltic Sea region ... · Multimodal mobility points in the Baltic Sea region –experiences from the Cities.multimodal project Dr Kristina Gaučė,

Good accessibility to PT stops and fast, frequent PT

Good accesibility to MPs on foot\by bike

Consistent cycling network

All modes unity: branding, e-tickets, apps for all

17

Page 18: Multimodal mobility points in the Baltic Sea region ... · Multimodal mobility points in the Baltic Sea region –experiences from the Cities.multimodal project Dr Kristina Gaučė,

Rostock case: sharing to foster multimodalityApproach• three small mobility points as pilots for a city-wide network• opening planned for April 2020

Target group: residents in pilot area, locals

Objectives:• reduce car traffic and car ownership rate in pilot area, lowering parking

pressure• increase visibility of sustainable transport modes• promote the idea of „using instead of owning“ • lowering CO2 emissions

Mobility Pointscities.multimodal definition

“A MP is a physical place which enables the interchange between at least two sustainable Expected Resutls. The intention is to create sustainable mobility options that are convenient and easy for citizens to use, thus providing the possibility to be mobile without owning a car. Add on features benefiting from a hub-concept such as parcel & post distribution, shared economy functions and equipment, material recycling etc. are highly encouraged”

Achieve an increase of sustainable mobility modes

Achieve a decrease of privately motorized vehicles

Promoting a particular mode of transport

Raise citizens’ awareness for sustainable mobility

Mobility PointsImportant Points – Objectives – Example Aarhus

Implementation: - One car parking spot will be replaced with cargo bike parking and a tree. - Extension of the pavement to 6.8 meters (length).- Construction of ten safe cargo bike racks to supplement nearby city bikes and e-scooters. - Distance to nearest car sharing cars 75 meters. Distance to the bus network 130 meters

Mobility PointsImportant Points – Objectives – Example Aarhus

Overarching objectives - Increasing acceptance of multimodal transport and travel behaviour by applying pilot solutions- Bringing about a change in awareness and mobility patterns of transport users by promoting sustainable mobility behaviour

Strategic objectives- Promoting and facilitating multimodal transport in pilot areas by creating transferable and prominent showcases and capacity building.”

Measure specific objectives - At least 50% of the surveyed households are aware of the mobility points- At least 75 % occupancy rate of the mobility points before 7am and after 5pm.- At least one of the surveyed households decides to live without a car based on the new options at the mobility points.- At least three more mobility points will be implemented in the city based on the experiences from the pilot.

Page 28: Multimodal mobility points in the Baltic Sea region ... · Multimodal mobility points in the Baltic Sea region –experiences from the Cities.multimodal project Dr Kristina Gaučė,

Mobility PointsImportant Points – Indicators – Example Aarhus

Awareness about sustainable mobility Awareness about multimodality Awareness of the MP: How aware are the masses about the concept of mobility points and

multimodality? Acceptance of the MP: How popular is the mobility point among masses? Perception of the MP: How do the masses perceive the mobility option at the mobility point in

comparison Number of users of implemented Mobility Points Frequency of access of MP: How often is the mobility point used? Is there increased frequency during

peak work hours? Trips made with private car (private car usage) Purpose of use of MP: For what purpose is the mobility point used? Trips to commute to work, for

recreational activities etc. Traffic/congestion levels during peak hours User behavior: Does the mobility station influence mobility behavior in the short and long term? Willingness to change mobility behaviour towards sustainable modes.

Page 29: Multimodal mobility points in the Baltic Sea region ... · Multimodal mobility points in the Baltic Sea region –experiences from the Cities.multimodal project Dr Kristina Gaučė,

Mobility Points Important Points – Target Group – Example Aarhus

• First: residents in the pilot area who at current time find it difficult to find parking for a cargo bike in the area.

• Second: people visiting the city centre. They can park their cargo bike here and walk or e-scoot the last mile to their destination.

Mobility PointsHow can we utilize the impacts of mobility points in our cities?

To those who have MPs in their cities already

What do you think are the factors that made it a success?

To those who don’t have MPs in their cities already

• Do you think it could benefit to reaching your sustainable mobility goals?• How would you initiate the process of implementing it?

To all

Do you have any questions concerning the implementation of mobility points in cities.multimodal?
