Strap on your goggles and try cleaning up an oil spill, testing solutions on oiled feathers, and learning how others help our earth with fun science experiments. Design your own reusable tote bag to take home. Grades 2-6 We invite younger scientists to celebrate Earth Day by rolling up their sleeves and exploring the importance of recycling. Help keep our oceans clean, and design a reusable tote bag to use again and again. Ages 3-6 Learn about the creatures that emerge and migrate in the spring! Did you know that whales migrate to different parts of the world like birds? See some whale artifacts and then create a bird feeder to attract migrating birds. Grades K-3 (April 25) So many different types of penguins! Learn about some unique penguin habitats, see some real penguin feathers and create a cute penguin habitat of your own. Teens/tweens april As we celebrate the achievements of women for International Women’s Day, explore the lives of whaling wives, who either chose to remain home and lead the family or join their husbands at sea. See some 19th century women’s fashion items from our collection, and practice the art of quilling. Quill a special memento to bring home. Teens/Tweens The Whaling Museum reaches more than 4,000 Long Islanders annually through our outreach program. Invite us over! Did you know that the father seahorse carries the eggs and gives “birth” to baby seahorses? Explore special ways devoted fathers in the sea help care for their little ones. Create a special seahorse craft for a special dad. Ages 3-6

(June 14)

In honor of Flag Day, explore ways whalers and sailors used different flags as a mode of communication between vessels. Learn the meaning behind some signal flags, and see some whaling artifacts from the museum’s collection. Design your own personalized signal flag. Grades 2-6

Get ready for summer beach days! Learn how to identify different types of sea shells found on our shores. See and touch some beautiful sea shells and sea stars from our collection. Decorate a sea shell picture frame to hold your summer memories. Teen/tween (Glue Guns used)

Did you know butterflies taste with their feet, and Blue Whales eat with hairy bristles? Explore amazing and unique ways to eat as you learn about these incredible creatures. Touch baleen from a whale’s mouth and create a butterfly craft. Grades K– 5

(May 13)

In honor of Mothers Day, discover different animal moms in the sea and the special ways their care for their babies. Learn about the special bond between mother whales and their calves. Hear a special story and design a Mothers Day card that you can give to someone special. Ages 3-6

As Spring sets in, discover the amazing world of blooming colors and blossoming shapes beneath the ocean waves. See and touch real coral from underwater reefs. Decorate a pot to plant and bring home some flower seeds to plant. Grades K-5

Did you know that an overgrown algae colony is called an “ocean bloom?” Learn about this interesting phenomena. Decorate a flower bloom “tie dyed” reusable tote. Teens/tweens
