Lesson
5-8
Improvises Simple Rhythmic or Melodic Accompaniments to Selected Music from the Lowlands of Luzon
In other places in the Philippines, people use improvised instruments/ accompaniments to their different musical forms especially in selected music from the Lowlands of Luzon.
What’s In
To fully understand this topic let us first know the difference between Brass Band
instruments and Pangkat Kawayan Instruments used from the Lowlands of Luzon.
• Brass Band Instruments
Is an ensemble of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. In the
Philippines, they are usually played in fiestas, religious, and civic celebrations. His/her
repertoire may include folk songs, popular music, and dance music, among others.
Examples are:
1. Clarinet- that has a single-reed mouthpiece and a straight cylindrical
tube with cylindrical bore, and a flared bell.
2. Flute- an aerophone that produces sound from the flow of air across an
opening. This is a known instrument.
3. Piccolo- shorter than flute and the sounds it produces is thinner than
the flute.
4. Tenor Saxophone- a medium-sized member of the saxophone family.
• Pangkat Kawayan Instruments
It is popularly known as the “Singing Bamboos of the Philippines,” is an orchestra
that plays music using non-traditional bamboo instruments. Preferably, all instruments
are made of bamboos.
Examples are:
1. Angklung- a bamboo-rattle tubes attached to a bamboo frame and the
tubes are carved to have a resonant pitch when struck, each angklung
represents a note and is tuned to octaves.
8
2. Pan Pipes- small pieces of bamboo in graduated small tubes that has
been put together by a string
3. Bumbong- it is made of hollow pieces of bamboo that has been put
together and serves as the orchestra’s wind section.
4. Talunggating- made from bamboo that follows the musical scale and
style of the typical xylophone.
After knowing the different instruments, answer the following:
1. What is the difference between the Brass Band Instruments and Pangkat Kawayan
Instruments? Cite the difference?
2. What group of instruments is more improvised? Why? Give your opinion.
3. Which of the group is more melodic/ rhythmic? Give your opinion.
4. What do you think is the reason of using different improvising accompaniments?
5. If you are to choose between the two groups of instruments, which is easier to
use?
Notes to the Teacher
You can also give more examples of improvise simple
rhythmic/ melodic accompaniments to fully understand the different
instruments of the music from the Lowland of Luzon. You can also
give a task to make an improvise accompaniments.

What’s New
Melodic/Rhythmic Defined
A melody, also a tune, voice, or line, is a linear succession of musical tones that
the listener perceives as a single entity. In its most literal sense, a melody is a
combination of pitch and rhythm, while more figuratively, the term can include
successions of other musical elements such as tonal color.
While Rhythm generally means a “movement marked by the regulated succession
of strong and weak elements, or of opposite or different conditions. This general meaning
of regular recurrence or pattern in time can be applied to a wide variety of cyclical natural
phenomena having a periodicity or frequency of anything from microseconds to several
seconds; to several minutes or hours, or, at the most extreme, even over many years.
Rhythm may be defined as the way in which one or more unaccented beats are
grouped into one. A rhythmic group can be apprehended only when its elements are
distinguished from one another, rhythm…always involves interrelationship between a
single, accented (strong) beat and either one or two unaccented (weak) beats.
What is It

Music from the Lowlands of Luzon

- a bamboo opening encircled by a banana leafing to a pentatonic
scale played on four holes, one found below and three on top of the
bamboo tube.
