Your host for this exquisite musical odyssey is MICHAEL PARLOFF, who will lead a series of private recitals by world-class musicians as you cruise the loveliest destinations from Athens to Rome. The artists featured on the opposite page were each personally invited by Mr. Parloff, who chose them not just for their superb talent, but also for their affable personalities. Principal Flutist of

the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra from 1977 until his retirement in 2008, Mr. Parloff has been heard regularly as recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. A member of the flute faculty at Manhattan School of Music since 1985, he is also is the founder and Artistic Director of Parlance Chamber Concerts in Ridgewood, New Jersey. Aboard Le Bougainville, he will illuminate the themes, composers, and repertoire of each private concert, examining the eras and circumstances surrounding the composers and their work—and adding a new layer of understanding and appreciation for the listener.

Music ProgramMichael Parloff has designed four concerts, with themes relating to the countries and ports-of-call visited.

4 CONCERTS: 1 concert inspired by Greek myths to correspond with the day in Sifnos + virtuoso showpieces by various Italian composers + a selection of Sicilianos by composers ranging from the 18th to the 20th century, performed ashore at Taormina’s medieval Cathedral.

PONANT’s “Piano Festivals at Sea” have become a must for fans of the instrument. In 2019, outstanding musicians will once again come together to give a series of exclusive concerts amongst the smaller, “undiscovered” islands of Greece and Turkey. As we sail the Aegean in pursuit of out-of-the-way destinations, each day finds us amid striking vistas that include forgotten ancient ruins, tucked-away Byzantine chapels, and villages where traditional occupations are still practiced. The evenings find us aboard Le Bougainville, where five acclaimed pianists provide scintillating music of the highest caliber. Brazilian star Nelson Freire, regarded as one of the best pianists in the world, will be accompanied by Russian virtuoso Anna Fedorova. Shani Diluka, a Sri Lankan poet with a delicate touch, Nicholas Angelich, a quasi-Proustian Franco-American pianist, and Frenchman Nicolas Stavy, a Liszt expert with fireworks for fingers, will also perform. A top-level piano festival awaits you!

Music ProgramA cruise in partnership with RADIO CLASSIQUE, Fourth Annual Piano Festival at Sea combines an exceptional musical line-up and cultural program hosted by Alain Duault, artistic director and musicologist.

Japan is a country pulled between its past and its future. On this voyage we focus on Japan’s history while enjoying exceptional chamber music and vocals from artists personally selected by director Alain Duault. Discover ancient religious traditions in Sakaiminato and at the Shinto Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site originally constructed over a thousand years ago. Pause in silent remembrance at the monument to a more recent history in Hiroshima, and discover the small city of Tamano, a former feudal domain. Composers Schubert and Schumann will be our guides throughout this marriage of Eastern tradition and sublime music, as they are interpreted by five great artists: Italian pianist Maurizio Baglini (who recorded the works of Schumann for Decca); violinist Geneviève Laurenceau of the smoldering bow; cellist Silvia Chiesa, the sonorous Italian star; Pierre Génisson whose caressingly-soft clarinet sound is almost indecent; and mezzo-soprano Delphine Haidan, with a voice that fully embraces the poetry of Schubert and Schumann.

Music ProgramThe first PONANT/Radio Classique music cruise to the Far East called for music in tune with the subtle inner landscape of the Land of the Rising Sun. Director Alain Duault has chosen two composers, Schubert and Schumann, whose music was born of a soul in torment, on a quest to find a sensory equivalent to this world suspended between water and sky.

Summer is the perfect time for this musical voyage, as we sail along the welcoming shores of the Adriatic and Ionian Seas and around the Peloponnese. Visit the Croatian island of Hvar, famous for its fields of lavender and laurel. We spend a day in the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Dubrovnik, where a walk along the massive walls remind us of its glorious past as the Republic of Ragusa; and the Bay of Kotor, where the still, deep waters of the bay and the clouds of floating mist create a surreal atmosphere. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Mycenae ruins and Epidaurus theater await you after Le Lyrial crosses the Corinth Canal. As we cruise through stunning scenery in the Adriatic, onboard concerts will alternate some of the most beautiful pages of chamber music ever written for piano, violin and cello in all combinations, performed by top artists virtuoso violinist Alexandra Conunova and dazzling cellist Edgar Moreau. Mirroring these string variations, with vocal accompaniment expert Antoine Palloc on piano, are three exceptional voices, that of Italian bel canto star Patrizia Ciofi, mezzo-soprano Ambroisine Bre, and tenor Julien Dran.

PONANT is proud to partner with Krug, the most musical of champagne houses, to bring fado, opera, and guitar to sea. Krug takes a uniquely lyrical approach to champagne creation, and just as the type, quality, range, and expression of an instrument and its musician contribute to the final performance, so the origin of each wine, its varietal, unique terroir, particular level of freshness, roundness, and depth are all crucial to the creation of the whole. As we taste Krug’s award-winning champagnes, the magnificent Portuguese soprano Raquel Camarinha, the great Argentine pianist Marcela Roggeri, renowned guitarist Emmanuel Rossfelder, Russian violinist Liana Gourdjia, pianist Yoan Hereau, and passionate cellist Ophélie Gaillard will bring the emblematic music of Spain and Portugal to life. Join these talented artists and Krug Champagne in an exploration of the connection between sound and taste!

Music ProgramThis vivid musical cruise in parternship with Krug is hosted by Alain Duault and combines fado, opera, and guitars with the colors and landscapes of the Iberian peninsula.

6 CONCERTS: 1 fado (folksongs) / 1 opera (Mozart, Bellini, Bizet, Donizetti, Handel, Puccini, Verdi, Rossini, Weber) / 1 guitar / 1 piano / 1 chamber music (Falla, Albeniz, Granados, etc.) / 1 encore concert

Music ProgramFeaturing Stefano Mazzonis di Pralafera, director the Royal Opera of Wallonia, this voyage pairs José van Dam with three great Belgium voices of the new generation to bring opera to the far reaches of the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, all under the leadership of Artistic Director Alain Duault.

The Great Voices of Belgium Under the Sun of the EastAthens to Aqaba (11 days/10 nights)

Aboard Le Bougainville November 15–25, 2019IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

From the land of Gods to that of Lawrence of Arabia, our journey will be as rich in nature as in culture. Greece mixes enchanting landscapes and architectures connecting mythology to history, Turkey’s Ephesus is counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (and it is in front of its famous library that we will hold one of our opera recitals), the Suez Canal has given rise to two shores that tell two cultures, Luxor is still today the impressive testimony of one of most beautiful civilizations of antiquity. In the midst of these wonders, some of the great Belgian voices of today will resonate around the guest of honor, José van Dam, the “Music Master” and one of the most important personalities of the lyrical art of our time. Onboard, our theme of opera is omnipresent: lyrical concerts, a masterclass, an interview with Van Dam, films with commentary by Van Dam, opera broadcasts from the Royal Opera of Wallonia presented by its Director: do not miss out on this immersive musical voyage!

Performing ArtistsA Brussels native, bass baritone JOSÉ VAN DAM is one of today’s leading opera performers. Since his debut in Paris, in Les Troyens, he has been the regular guest at the world’s most important opera houses and festivals (Paris, Covent Garden, La Scala of Milan, Wiener Staatsoper, the Metropolitan Opera, etc.). His most famous

roles include Falstaff, Simon Boccanegra, Philip II (Don Carlos), Don Giovanni, and many others. Jose also developed a career in the oratorio and lied fields; his repertoire is just as wide. He received the rank of Knight in the order of the Legion of Honor, and in 1998 was ennobled by King Albert II.

Baritone LIONEL LHOTE graduated from Brussels’ Conservatoire Royal de Musique. His career started at Opéra Royal de Wallonie, and since his international breakthrough, he has appeared as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly (a role he is reprising

in the 2018 season), Faninal in Rosenkavalier, Don Alfonso in Nozze di Figaro, and many others. He distinguished himself in the role of Somarone in two different productions of Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédictone. Lionel looks forward to singing the Directeur de la Troupe in Pinocchio, the latest opera by the Belgian composer Philipee Boesmans.

ANTOINE PALLOC is an expert pianist who has worked with singers such as Béatrice Uria-Monzon and Frederica von Stade. His recent engagements have taken him to Berlin, Nice, Toulouse, Strasbourg, San Francisco, Rio, as well as the Grand Théâtre de

Genève, Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Kennedy Center.

Belgian tenor MARC LAHO studied voice and trumpet at Académie Royale de Beaux-Arts in Liège. He made his opera debut in 1989 at Opéra de Monte Carlo in the role of the Officer in J. Massenet Thérese. His repertoire includes the roles of Don Ottavio

in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Fernando in Donizetti La Favorita, and Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore. Most recently he has been heard in The Damnation of Faust at Bolshoi Moscow and at the Colmar Festival.

Join us on this new circuit through the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Seas as we explore the medieval heritage that abounds on their shores. Begin with an exploration of the historic center of Naples, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is home to Baroque churches, romantic squares, and ancient palaces. In Taormina, we step back in time to admire the beautifully preserved ancient Greek/Roman theater, dominated by Mount Etna in the background. Before ending our voyage among the canals of La Serenissima, we visit the UNESCO-listed Palace of Diocletian in Split, designed by the emperor as his vacation home, and encounter two of the best-preserved medieval cities in all of Europe: Dubrovnik and Kotor. The perfect musical accompaniment to this journey is provided by violinist Didier Lockwood, who will perform with a quartet consisting of André Ceccarelli (drums), Antonio FaraÒ (piano), and Darryl Hall (cello).

The Sister ShipsLe Lyrial and Le Soléal are part of PONANT’s sister ship series, the youngest, most beautifully

conceived, and technologically sophisticated small ships afloat. Designed in France and built

in Italy, each vessel has its own color palette and thematic motif, but all share in the elegantly

understated aesthetic one associates with European sensibility and craftsmanship. PONANT

was selected for Conde Nast Traveler’s 2018 Gold List in the World’s Best Small Cruise Ship

category, and won Town & Country’s Cruise Awards for “Best Aboard” in 2017.

The ExplorersPremiering in June 2018, PONANT’s four new luxury expedition ships will set sail to the world’s

most inaccessible locations and go further—where others do not go. The PONANT EXPLORER

yachts, each measuring 430 feet in length, are designed for just 184 guests and 110 crew

members. They feature innovative equipment, elegantly designed guest accommodations,

and welcoming lounge areas that open to the outside. And, in a world exclusive, the PONANT

EXPLORER yachts will be the first ships ever to be equipped with an underwater, multi-

sensory lounge, called Blue Eye, located within the hull 8 feet beneath the water line. Two

large windows provide views of the underwater marine life, which guests can also hear and

sense through unique wave technology.

THE PONANT SHIPSCARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENTPONANT’s concern for the health and well-being of the planet is demonstrated by our active involvement in organizations dedicated to the promotion of ecologically responsible tourism and to the sharing of best practices. We are a proud member of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators and a signatory of La Charte Bleue d’Armateurs de France, both of which bind us to follow the most stringent rules and regulations governing safety and environmental protection.

CLEAN SHIPSAbove and beyond participation in these organizations, we have taken the additional step of having all of our sister ships and the new PONANT EXPLORERS certified “Clean Ship” by the French classification society, Bureau Veritas, one of the world’s major ship classification societies. This coveted and seldom-awarded certification recognizes that the PONANT fleet—from initial design and construction to seagoing operations—has adopted the most environmentally responsible materials, equipment, and management procedures possible.
