They will help us to identify the emotions we feel and strategies we can use to be ready for learning and playing at school. Zones of regulation is a systematic, cognitive behaviour approach used to teach self-regulation by categorizing all the different ways we feel and states of alertness we experience into four concrete zones. The Zones curriculum provides strategies to teach students to become more aware of, and independent in controlling their emotions and impulses, managing their sensory needs, and improving their ability to problem solve conflicts. The Red Zone is used to describe extremely heightened states of alertness and intense emotions. A person may be elated or experiencing anger, rage, explosive behaviour, devastation, or terror when in the Red Zone. The Yellow Zone is also used to describe a heightened state of alertness and elevated emotions; however, one has some control when they are in the Yellow Zone. A person may be experiencing stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, the wiggles, or nervousness when in the Yellow Zone. The Green Zone is used to describe a calm state of alertness. A person may be described as happy, focused, content, or ready to learn when in the Green Zone. This is the zone where optimal learning occurs. The Blue Zone is used to describe low states of alertness and down feelings, such as when one feels sad, tired, sick, or bored. It would be great if as a community we are all using similar language to describe our emotional state and we believe that the Zones provide an excellent easy to understand model for students of any age to comprehend. Please discuss these zones with your child, model how to identify your emotional state and provide options for when your children are having difficulty self-regulating. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Carers,

Zones of Regulation This week we are learning about the zones of regulation. TERM 2 WEEK 2 Wednesday 8th May 2019

Girls League Tag Congratulations to the senior girls’ league tag team who were runners up in the Debbie Carroll Shield last Wednesday 1st May. The team was only selected in the last week of Term 1, and with only a couple of training sessions together and with some girls having never played league tag before, they played outstanding and they should all be very proud of their efforts and results. The first game was against Denman Public School which was very close all game and ended up in a 4 all draw. The second game was against one of the St James Muswellbrook teams and the girls found some rhythm and ended up winning 16 points to 4. The final game in their pool was against a tight St Catherine's Singleton team with the score staying low however MSPS prevailed winning 4 nil. MSPS and Denman finished equal on top of Pool A however on for-and-against countback MSPS had scored more points and therefore advanced to the final. The girls were very excited! In the final they played against a very strong and experienced St Joseph's Denman side. Our team played the best they have ever played and kept the game very close and exciting, only going down 8 points to 4 (1 try difference). The entire team played outstanding all day. There were great skills on display. Some amazing tags; solid defence and moving up as a team with desperate try saving dives; length of the field runs, as well as intercepts and big kicks. The girls showed great sportsmanship on and off the field and had the best team manager (injured Indy) warming them up and offering words of advice from the sideline. Thank you to the mothers who helped transport the girls out to Denman, and who supported the girls all day. Thank you to Denman Rugby League Club for the use of the venue and canteen facilities, the referees for officiating and Daniel Swan and the NRL Development Officers for organising a wonderful event.

Opens Knights Knockout Rugby League On Thursday 2nd May the senior boys’ rugby league team travelled to Waratah Oval in Newcastle to participate in the Newcastle Knights Knockout. After a very disruptive preparation with lots of team changes due to unfortunate injuries and illness, this team of 14 troopers gave it their all in what were some very brutal and tough games. The boys played some great football recording a draw against Shortland PS, a win against Shoal Bay PS but finished with losses against King Street PS and Singleton Heights PS. Overall they finished second in their pool. The boys are to be commended for their great sportsmanship displayed both on and off the field. Thank you very much to Mossy & Footy for helping coach, Mr Wild for accompanying, the parents who helped transport the boys and supported throughout the day and Daniel Swan and the PlayNRL Development Team who organised a great day.

PSSA Netball On Thursday 2nd May, Muswellbrook South Public School netball team travelled to Bill Rose Sports Complex in Scone to compete in Round 1 of the PSSA Knockout competition. The team came up against very tough competition in Muswellbrook Public School who ended up winning with a very high score line 52-2. Muswellbrook South PS then played a friendly match against Murrurundi PS, to further develop the girl’s skills in a game setting with MSPS being victorious in a close game 11-10. The girls showed great skill, enthusiasm and wonderful sportsmanship throughout the day. Thank you to the parents who transported girls on the day, supported the team and helped cook the BBQ. Thank you to Miss Flannery for coaching, Miss Watson for helping organise the day and the other schools for participating. A huge thank you to The Chop Shop in Muswellbrook and The Thoroughbred in Scone who kindly donated bread and sausages for the students, teachers and parents to have a sausage sizzle and chat after the games. Thank you for supporting Upper Hunter PSSA and our local public schools.

TERM 2 WEEK 2 Wednesday 8th May 2019

PSSA Classic Shield Rugby League The senior boys’ rugby league team travelled to Pirtek Park Singleton on Monday 6th May to participate in the PSSA Classic Shield Knockout competition. Unfortunately in Round 1 they suffered a large defeat 42-0 to Scone PS who are a very skilled and tough team. They then played a consolation game against Singleton Heights PS which was another tough game and unfortunately also recorded a loss 28-0. The boys never gave up and showed improvement in times from their games they played last week. It is a very young team with some players absent with injury, which looks promising for the future of rugby league at MSPS.

Zone Cross Country We have 24 students attending the Upper Hunter zone cross country carnival at Karoola Park, Muswellbrook today Wednesday 8th May. We wish them all good luck and congratulations for making it to zone. PSSA Soccer Both our girls and boys soccer teams will play their first UHPSSA soccer knockout matches on Thursday at the Bill Rose Sporting Complex in Scone. Both teams are very excited and we hope they do really well. Thank you Mrs Felan for helping train the girl’s team.

They will be notified of what sport they are in on Wednesday afternoon or Thursday. Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual, national event when all Primary School children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote

road safety, health, public transport and the environment. WSTSD is an event which encourages parents, carers and their children to build regular walking to and from school into their daily routine as children need a minimum of 60 minutes exercise per day. Muswellbrook South Public School is participating on Friday 18th May, where teachers will be walking to school from designated spots around the South of Muswellbrook. Students and families are welcome to join in and walk to school from 8.15am with a teacher. Teachers will be at Aldi, Bowman Park (Lorne Street), Osborn Avenue (corner of Skellatar Stock Route Rd), Prince of Wales, and Wollombi Road (Lane way) at 8.15am wearing a bright safety vest.

# PLEASE BE ADVISED # There has been an outbreak of head lice throughout the school. We would ask all parents to check their children’s hair and treat them and any siblings, if necessary.

Parking at United Petrol Station Just a reminder to parents and families dropping or picking up students, or visiting the school at any time, please do not to park in front of the ice box at United Service Station (on the Osborn Bus side of the service station) as it obstructs the access for fuel trucks. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Road Safety For the safety of students and adults, please make sure road rules are followed at all times. Speed limits must be adhered to around surrounding streets as well as in the TAFE carpark. Please keep an eye out for pedestrians walking through the TAFE carpark and crossing at traffic lights. Children under the age of 10 must hold a parents hand when crossing roads. At no time should pedestrians walk through the staff carpark or driveway gates. Please use walkways and gates. Thank you for your cooperation.

Osborn Ave We have received increasing reports of parents parking in no parking zones and double parking along Osborn Ave. As well as this being a traffic offence that incurs large fines, it is extremely dangerous for the high volume of traffic and pedestrians that access the area. Please respect all road rules for the safety of our children.
