MVOU NEWS
There has been a series on the history of Country Music running on PBS for several weeks and one part of the promo features artists doing the Ray Charles hit, Crying Time. Feels
like that should be our theme song lately.
During our last rally we met with Region 4 President Karen Fisher. Karen advised she had received notice from WBAC that we do not have enough
members to qualify as a Unit. She outlined several paths we could follow that seemed to all be variations on the theme that our Unit goes away.
Karen did offer one ray of hope; she offered to talk to with Region and WBAC officials on whether there were any exceptions that could be
granted. I haven’t heard anything more on that front.
We have several decisions to make that spring from the status of our Unit. Periodically each Unit is required to refresh the Unit Constitution to bring it in line with changes to the WBAC
Constitution. This is our year to refresh. To be honest, I’ve been dragging my feet a little based on the where we go with the Unit status. If the Unit is not going to exist, work on the Constitution becomes a moot point.
Likewise, we are scheduled to install new officers in October. If we don’t elect new officers,
then we have defacto made the decision to quit as a Unit. We have very little wiggle room with respect to an election – I have already received documents from WBAC to return listing
our officers for 2020. The current officers and Committee Chairs are:
• Dave Brett, President • Don Burkholder, Treasurer
• Rick Richardson, 1st Vic President • Rick Richardson, Membership Chair
• Gary Todd, 2nd Vice President • Nancy Brett, Newsletter Editor
• Elaine Richardson, Secretary • Dave Brett, Webmaster
Our next get together is October 20th at the Chop House in Warren. We will hold the election and installation at that luncheon, followed by a business meeting to set the schedule of rallies and luncheons for 2020.
On another note – Great Rally at Geneva. It reminded me of one of the first camping trips
Nancy and I did. We were in Indiana and the weather turned ugly; power went out. Fortunately, it was during the day and power returned during the evening. But it was really
pleasant to sit in the trailer, watch the water swirling in the park, and listen to the rain hit the trailer. The storm at Geneva was way worse, but it goes with the territory. On the way home Nancy and I were talking about what we needed to pack/change for the next time we
face a power outage – how about you? Dave

The September 12-15, 2019 Akron/MVOU Rally was a fun-filled, jam-
packed rally with an unexpected storm and power outage!
The joint rally began on Thursday with tent set-up and Happy Hour
followed by a delicious potluck dinner. (Ed note: trip 1 – to set up trailer at
Rally, then home for a meeting.)
Friday was a very busy day – Akron Unit cooked a delicious breakfast of
French toast, sausage and mixed fruit; then a tour of the Hubbard House and
the Underground Railroad and a tour of the Ashtabula Maritime and Surface
Transportation Museum. A picnic lunch followed at Lakeshore Park with
sandwiches, chips and cookies; then a stop at Smolen Covered Bridge followed
by a visit at Brandt’s Apple Cider Farm. The Akron Unit served meatloaf &
scalloped potatoes back at Willow Lake with Ice Cream and pie for dessert!
After dinner, Region President Karen Fisher met with Mahoning Valley. Just
as we were closing our meeting – the wind started to blow and WHAM – we

barely managed to batten down the hatches as the storm roared through the
campground! Lights flickered – light hail for less than a minute - around 8:00
pm – then, no power!! Power did not come back on till Sunday around 2:00 am!
(Ed note: The last time the Brett’s had no power – there was no sleep.)
Saturday was a back to the basics – MVOU provided a leisurely breakfast -
Omelets in a bag in a turkey fryer – coffee pots on a gas stove! Delicious!
The Burkholders arranged
the two winery tours in the
Afternoon while the Bretts
headed home for the
Generator and a good night’s
sleep at Willow Lake!! By 5:15 pm, everyone had arrived at the Elks Club in
Ashtabula with delicious food, good conversation and a group picture. Saturday
night was quiet. Sunday morning brought a continental breakfast, tent
breakdown, goodbyes and see you down the road!
Thank you, Jack & Elaine & Rick & Elaine for an unforgettable Rally!
