Presidents Message By Bill Rogers
It’s July and the “HOT” weather is here! It is always a challenge to keep the em-ployees happy when it is soooooo…..hot in the plants. Keeping the fans going…...starting earlier in the morning before the heat sets in, pro-viding cooling towels and any other means to make it tolerable are all suggestions. Some of the Kentucky drycleaners and I attended the meetings of the Jefferson County Air Pollution Control to try and keep the fees at a reasonable rate. We tried our best, but unfortunately they pretty much had things planned out before we got there. We tried! Thanks for coming out for Golf at Polo Fields. We had a good day!
Annual Convention is at French Lick again this year with a committee planning some different things. Luau, Block Party with DJ, Seminars and there will still be family time or the opportunity to hit the casino. Our Allied Members will have tabletops and a reception just before the Luau. We are also planning the special seminars with Martin Young sponsored by E J Thomas here in Indiana, Kentucky & Ohio. Don’t miss attending at least one of these. Guaran-teed to be educational and FUN. See you at Convention!

Allied Spotlight on EzProducts an Allied Member of MWDLA. By Ian P. Murphy a freelance writer and edi‐tor in Chicago. He served as editor of American Dry‐cleaner from 1999—2011. Since 1989, Wauchula, Florida‐based EzProducts International (EzPi) Inc. has been manufacturing and selling permanent heat‐seal clothing labels, heat‐seal presses, and additional labeling accessories to drycleaners, allowing small operators to embrace the automated mark‐in and inventory pioneered by industrial laundries to track and inventory gar‐ments. Without EzProducts and the tracking capa‐bilities it offers, the automated and assisted assem‐bly systems now winning widespread acceptance for inventory, assembly, and retrieval wouldn’t have made the inroads they presently enjoy. Dave Brown launched the company and is still president of EzProducts today; he designed all of the company’s heat‐seal presses with the drycleaning industry in mind, and later expanded the company’s offerings to produce tiny labels for eyeglasses. Ez‐Products line includes TrackIt and thermal‐transfer printers; labels use Perma Wash ink that can with‐stand 600 washings and cleanings With input from actual operators, EzProducts designed the digital EZPress and digital PopUpPress, which offer fea‐tures usually found on presses three times the price. In 2007, EzProducts held a focus group with
seven of the largest drycleaners in the U.S. just before the Clean Show in Las Vegas. “We wanted their input on their ‘ideal’ heat‐seal press for personal clothing as we were redesigning our presses, “ says Diane Rue, vice president of sales and marketing for EzProducts. “Out of that focus group came the digital Model‐7 press. Ez‐Products and Dave Brown always listen to suggestions for improvements from drycleaners themselves and implement these changes regularly.” Following operator recommendations, the Model 7 was developed as a lightweight press with a small foot‐print. It offers consistent heat, interchangeable mini platens, and operator error detec‐tion; it adjusts to automatically add seconds of heating time on wet or damp garments; and it has no springs or knobs. The only industrial strength digital heat‐seal press made spe‐cifically for personal clothing widely available on the market today, the Model 7 is also fully up‐gradeable, meaning that it will never become obsolete. All EzProducts heat‐seal presses meet the world’s high‐est safety certifications and are OSHA approved, Rue adds.

MWDLA will be staying at French Lick Springs Hotel for the Annual Convention again this year. The resort has two historic and magnificent hotels, just one mile apart in southern Indiana. The hotels epitomize the most im-pressively grand hotels of the early twentieth century. Historical tours are offered daily.
French Lick Springs Hotel was established in 1845 with the original current wing built in 1901. It operated continuously as a celebrated haven to famous personalities until it was closed for restoration in November 2005. The Resort’s top-to-bottom restoration renewed more than 5,000 square feet of gold leaf and remark-able ornamental design features.
Built a year later in 1902, West Baden Springs Hotel was the essence of grandeur, boasting a six-story domed atrium among other extraordinary architectural elements. The hotel is honored as a National Historic Landmark and has been restored to recapture its status as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” See it with your own eyes! Experience a world of lavish history and outstanding beauty!
Get your reservations in now! Special Room Rate of $159 is being held until July 10th. When making your reservation give them the Group Code 0813MDC. Call now to be assured of a room and a fun educational weekend with fellow drycleaners and families. Yes, we want you to bring your family. We will have DJ Big Poppa for a Luau and Rockin’ 50’s, 60’s 70’s Party. Prepare to have some fun. Casual dress and lots of good food. Educational events, golf, swimming, family fun time and even their famous casino for adult fun time. Ride a bicycle built for two, have a slice of pizza, go horseback riding, have an ice cream cone.
Also….if you are coming in early French Lick will give you a special rate of $129.00. Bring the kids for a mini vacation before school starts. Let’s make this a fun family time. Children, grandchildren, everyone is in-vited. It’s time we get out of our plants and have some FUN!

Executive Director Report
By Rick Armstrong
MWDLA is very active this summer. We have lots of events scheduled for the dry-cleaners in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. We have our Annual Convention at French Lick August 9th and 10th. This year we had a committee putting together
the plans and activities. We will have two educational events on Saturday. An Allied Reception is planned on Friday evening followed by a Luau with delicious food planned by the Chef at French Lick, then some beautiful Hawaiian Music and also some popular favorite songs by our DJ Duke Blevins of Poppa Productions. Saturday afternoon after the seminars will be left open for FAMILY FUN TIME. There is horseback riding, swimming, Fun Fest for the kids, perhaps an ice cream cone, all types of exciting fun family things to do. Saturday night we will have our Rockin’ Block Party with music from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Find your poo-dle skirts, madras plaid shirts, bell bottom pants scarves or penny loafers. Join us on the patio for dinner, and dancing. We guarantee you will have a good time and we look forward to seeing every one of you. We have a CSR seminar planned later in August with Martin Young from Concord Cleaners in North Carolina. Martin has lectured on many topics and while he is here as a guest of MWDLA he will do three (3) seminars for CSR individuals and one (1) for managers. Someone asked me ‘What is a CSR?” CSR stands for Cus-tomer Service Representative or those employees who routinely handle the customers at the front counter. He will also be addressing Conflict Free Management for you and your managers. I want to welcome Marcia Earwood, Go Green Cleaners and Supplies of Ashland, Kentucky as a new member of the MWDLA Association. We look forward to meeting you at some of the events we have planned. We encourage you to participate in the many and varied programs and activities offered from both DLI and MWDLA and you will see the return on your investment. We also extend an invitation to any of your em-ployees to also attend the training events and social activities we have scheduled. The business connections you make, the individuals you meet, the friendships you make will all help to make your membership very im-portant to your business. I want to encourage all drycleaners to give us your email addresses. If something very important comes up we can send you a notice right away. You also have our web site, DLI’s web site, and other locations that provide a wealth of knowledge just a click away. We send your newsletter out just as soon as it is ready by email if you provide your address to us. We would share your address with our Allied Members who might be doing a mailing to our members, but we never give it to anyone else, or sell it to any outside organization. Keep cool in this Midwest summer heat and see you all next month.
TOP 10 REASONS TO ATTEND THE 2013 MWDLA ANNUAL CONVENTION One of the most important things you should do is to budget for you and/or your family to attend the MWDLA Convention. I’ve always heard that people come back with new energy, great ideas, and a realization that their organization is doing a lot of things right. Think about these points when you consider attending! Empowerment We come together to share our perspective on the important industry issues. We break the convention down into manageable activi-ties, and put ease into actually conversing with other cleaners in the same industry. Attendees soon realize how powerful their in-volvement can be. The minimal cost to attend this annual convention is well worth the information received that can be shared with your staff. Best Practices Our convention presenters will speak about programs and issues that are current and poignant and relate to issues that we all struggle with. Many initiate their own breakout sessions that is focused on specific topics. The mix of attendees includes board members as well as allied trade members who liaison with all members of MWDLA. Presenters are experts in their fields and offer many topics, best practices and resources. Understanding National Issues This year in particular — our keynote speaker will put us all on the same page concerning national issues of OBAMA care. We will become more acutely aware of the economic impacts we will be facing. Jan Barlow, Past President of DLI will bring us up to date on “What’s new at DLI” and then she plans to share “Successful strategies for a profitable business.” The goal is to gain an under-standing of the new policies become more informed and better business managers. Activities French Lick offers lots of interesting things to do in your free time. There are two historical hotels at French Lick. You can take a free shuttle bus to West Baden as well as touring French Lick Resort. The history and structure of these beautiful buildings is some-thing you will not want to miss. Then there is swimming, the casino, a spa, golf, horseback riding, and a special little building out front for Fun Fest for the young children attending. They hike, bike, bake, make crafts, and have lots of fun activities planned for our “Young Cleaners”. If you just want to relax, read a book, have an ice cream cone, share some time with some other drycleaners or friends, there is the huge front porch with large white rocking chairs where you can “chill out” and enjoy the afternoon. French Lick has lots to offer at the hotel, or in town just a short walking distance away. Organizational Development The MWDLA Annual Convention provides a venue to meet board members and Allied Trades members that can provide a wealth of information, experience, and resources to help your association develop and grow even stronger within our industry. Putting a face with a name enhances the relationships that have occurred with the MWDLA office via e-mail or phone. Networking Meeting new friends from all over the states who are involved in similar groups in another part of the country is fun! Exchanging ideas at the annual convention can often lead to new and improved ways of doing things, and create opportunities to try something different. Members can also build a support network with people who can be contacted when questions arise, or to get information on how another cleaner operates. Relationship Building One of the benefits with the most value is the relationship building that occurs amongst the members who are attending as a group. The shared experiences and informal conversations over meals can help people understand each other and work together better as a team. Please plan to attend the MWDLA Annual convention this August 9th and 10th, 2013! The time and expense for you to come is well worth the benefits received and can truly make a difference for your business. Contributed by: Robin Kramer, Member of MWDLA Board of Directors and Manager of St. Michael’s Laundry, Notre Dame.

Martin Young has made a career of gathering and sharing knowledge about caring for textiles and the garment care industry. After growing up in the family cleaners; Martin tested the wa-ters outside of the cleaning industry, only to return in 1981. By 1989 Martin was being asked to train employees for other cleaners and was part of IFI’s train the trainers in 1994. An article in American Drycleaner Magazine in 1997 called Martin “one of the best buys in the industry”, as a trainer and consultant. Over the past twenty years Martin has been to the NorthEastern Fabricare Association, the West Virginia Fabricare Association, the SouthEastern Fabricare As-sociation, and the North Carolina Association of Launderers and Cleaners. Martin spoke at the 2009 Clean Show on his experience as an Award of Excellence Cleaner. For the past five years he has written the stain removal tips column for American Drycleaner Magazine. Martin’s plant was one of the very first to earn the AOE designation in 2005. His plant has been voted “Best Drycleaners” in a local newspaper poll, in eleven of fourteen years; in-cluding the first nine years consecutively. Martin is a past president of NCALC and is respected for his passion for the cleaning industry by both cleaners and the regulatory community. He speaks regularly on topics rang-ing from customer service and management to hiring and retaining employees. When not on the road meeting with regulators or other cleaners, he can be found in the cleaning department of his plant trying to exceed his customer’s expectations.

IN MEMORY OF
GARY GENE KNIGHT Gary Gene Knight, 70, life-long community member of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Saturday, March 9th in his home surrounded by his family. Funeral services for Gary were held Wednesday, March 13th at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastors Dana Hendershot and Ron Vredeveld officiating. The family received friends at Clark Family Funeral Chapel where arrange-ments were handled. Gary was born on December 2, 1942 in Mt. Pleasant, son of Marvel (Warner) and Eugene Knight. He was a member of the MPHS class of ’61, and attended college at Ferris and Central Michigan University for four years before going into business full time with his father at American Cleaners. The cleaners diversified over the years, adding another branch in St. Johns and a laundry mat and uniform rental service in Mt. Pleasant. When Gary sold the business in 2007, he became a consultant to drycleaners around the country. He was active in the industry for over 50 years, serving on the Michigan Institute of Dry Cleaning Board two times. At their annual conference this past summer, the Michigan Institute of Laundry and Dry cleaning presented Gary with the Mike O’Neil Award--an award presented only every four or five years and that recognizes “the spirit and steadfast devotion of individuals who have provided im-measurable support and contributions to the dry cleaning industry as well as leadership and involvement in various community endeavors.” Gary was an Allied Member and supporter of MWDLA representing American Drycleaning Training. Gary was generous in so many ways, including service to his community. Over the years, he was a member of the following boards: Mt. Pleasant Planning Commission, Deerfield Township Planning Commission, Middle Michigan De-velopment Corporation, Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce, Mid-Michigan Industries, Co-Expo, Airport Advisory, and the Mt. Pleasant City Commission where he was twice elected as Mayor. Gary is a member of Immanuel Lu-theran Church, and has also served on that Council as a member and president. Gary’s hobbies were unique in that each was shared with a family member—hunting with his sons-in-law and grand-sons, gardening with his mother-in-law, years of showing horses with his father-in-law and his daughter Dana, trav-eling to many Spanish-speaking countries with Sue, dry cleaning (and he truly enjoyed it) with his father, his brother and later his daughter Kara. He loved being with family and friends, be it at his home on the river, the barn, or at his hunting cabin. Gary had so many dear and faithful friends whom he enjoyed and was thankful for all of his life. Gary is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sue; two daughters, Dana (Howard) Brophy of Bloomfield Hills and Kara (Dan) Watters of Mt. Pleasant; five grandchildren Asher, Claire, Megan, Lawson and Mallory; a sister, Kay Wantland (Richard), brother Denny (Linda), sister-in-law Linda Gray, brother-in-law Tom (Mary) Krapohl; nieces and nephew, and step-mother, Lorraine Knight. He was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Harold and Marie Krapohl. He is also survived by many other relatives and dear friends who have supported him in so many ways over the past five years. In lieu of flowers, Gary requested that memorials be made to University of Michigan Cancer Center Development Of-fice, Sarcoma Research Fund or to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
With Deepest Sympathy……..
